| This fall, the all-new 2007 LS 460 will completely redefine luxury the world over. Take off with a 380 horsepower, 4.6-liter direct-injection V8 and the world's first eight-speed automatic transmission, launching you from 0-60 in less than 5.5 seconds. There's also an available Lexus voice-activated HDD Navigation System with Bluetooth® technology (standard on LS 460L). Inside is genuine wood trim, supple leather trim and the resonant 19-speaker Mark Levinson® Reference Surround Sound System (available on LS 460 and 460L). An 8-gigabyte audio server is available. Another first for Lexus will be the availability of the LS in both a standard- and long-wheelbase (LS 460L) model. For rear passengers of the 460L, available amenities include a center console table, climate-comfort seats and a rear-seat massager (right rear seat only). A Premium Four-Passenger Seat package with Rear-Seat Entertainment DVD System is available for the long-wheelbase model (LS 460L). The new LS-luxury that knows no borders. | I'm not Moe | 8 sounds a little unnecessary, are they just trying to outdo MB's 7speed auto? the front looks like the Mazda3 from that angle and why is it presented by LandRover? |

Rep Power: 22 ![]() | Well we don't have autobahns here in North America . To me anything above 5 gears in an auto transmission is kind of unnecessary right now. |

When the gear changes, it only has to drop back around 2000RPM before you get going again whereas on something like a 5-speed, you drop back maybe 3,4 or even 5000 RPM. It all leads to smoother power delivery and it even helps the fuel economy aswell. 8-speeds however is going to be too much I think. The only problem noted with the 7-speeders is how sometimes the tranny doesn't always know what gear it should be in. The result of this is seen in stop-start traffic, when you can occasionally get a jerk. If Lexus can pull of a 8-speed tranny that doesn't do that, it'll be an engineering achievement. I rekon the auto-industry should try cracking transmissions one at a time - Lets first master the 7-speed. |

| They are wrong. Nissan had an 8-speed Skyline 5 years ago. It was a CVT but it had 8 gears which you can change via paddle shift. You get this in the Japanese market Skyline GT-8--the top of the line sedan model. ![]()

But these CVT boxes certainly does not compare to a conventional gearbox. If we can compare them as apples to apples, then Nissan or Honda can easily program a 9-step program to top the competition. And the race to "as many gears as you want" will never end, at least that holds true in a CVT. So we shouldn't compare a CVT to a conventional gearbox. | |
