ah, the strains of being a targa owner images/smilies/biggrin.gif

either you have an old one and people call it a cab with a roll bar

or

you have a new one and people call it a big sun roof

i honestly think the move to the coupe-based targa with the 996's was the smartest thing Porsche did. lost the water leaks of the cab-based ones and gained the chassis rigidity of the coupe.

P-car owner 1: Does your roof leak?
Targa owner: Its a targa.

now seriously, thats an educating thread. i never really knew what the targa stood for...i did neither know that you could move the whole glass roof backwards on the newer models nor that you can take the middle and rear bits away on an older model. images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

i was never much into porsches, but that makes me want a targa. images/smilies/w00t.gif

I hardly notice any difference in that "facelift". But then, you wouldn't notice a facelift on Keira Knightley, would you?

i love my targa, and now i want a 997 targa.

the 993 and older targas were the cabriolet with extra bits added.

the G-series (84-89) and older were a full cab tup with a roll bar added, in '69 (and maybe '68) there was an option for a soft rear window, allowing easy removal, and more water leaks. the rigid glass window is more common. conversion of these cars to a cab is simple.

the 993 looking the most like the 996 based targas, but it was still cab-based, so the body flex ended up providing a less that adequate fit, and rain leaked in. it was the first model targa with a sliding glass roof rather than the folding fabric roof (mostly because unlike the previous models, the 993 had no where near enough boot space to store a removed top) the 993 targa was also (basically) a hatchback, as with the top closed, the rear window opens up to allow access to the rear seats (for skis, etc)

the 996 brought the coupe based targa, and kept the sliding glass and sun shade. no leaks, basically as rigid as a coupe, still the huge opening skyward
