Right, ignore the fact that it's a Jag, just think of it as a new car. The competitors are:
-S-class -A8 -Quattroporte -Continental -7 series You're not going to buy the S class because it's for old people, the A8 is for cocks, the Bently is for footballers, the 7 is for Germans and the Quattroporte is an acquired taste. If you wanted a car in that market segment you're going to get the Jag. |

the interior is faptastic, the rest is... meh.
I saw an XF today, and I figured out what is wrong with it. It's too high and skinny. Jags are supposed to be low and wide and menacing.

Damn the haters, I like it. Rear end's a bit droopy and Citroen-y for my liking, and that C-pillar is absolutely retarded, but it looks dramatic, graceful, and just slightly aggressive - perfect for a big Jag. And it carries its proportions far better than the Camry-looking XF with its random scattered bits of Pep Boys chrome moldings.
And especially a big Jag that doesn't look like its dreary 1960s BL counterparts, reeking of a stuffy, anachronistic Victorian-era drawing room that old Brit toffs go to reminisce about their days in the Boer War. I mean, what the hell did you guys want, really? If Jaguar had introduced a new XJ that looks like the ones they've been building since the days of the Newcomen steam engine, you would have rioted and demanded something cutting-edge. Well, here it is, and of course it's going to look wonky at first - we're all too used to the previous models, like any new car. But it's about damn time Jaguar joined the 20th century.

I love the front of it, the headlights look gracefully aggressive and it has great presence. The back looks too much like a Quattroporte, which isn't bad, it just shows after thought. I'm not sure about the interior yet, it looks very busy.

I'm going to buck the trend and say that it looks fantastic. As a piece of design it is leaps and bounds ahead of its rivals. People seem to get caught up with what Jaguars used to look like, the circular headlights, the traditional lines going up the bonnet. They used to be cars which tended to its current consumers, whilst maintaining a modern twist which attracted newer, younger buyers to the brand.
Every car manufacturer has a model in its lineup which is somewhat pushing the boundaries, a marmite car. Jaguars previous one was the S-type, which I also thought was gorgeous, and despite many people saying it wasn't a very pretty car, the number of S-types I saw on the road always outnumbered the rest of the Jag range, I saw. This car could not afford to be designed conservatively, the XJ needed to be brought into line with the rest of the range (bar X-type which is due to be replaced soon anyways), no company is successful overly successful if they keep things the same too long, apart from Morgan that is. The front end is a matured, more sophisticated version of the XF, it has presence. The rear, whilst hard to swallow for most folk, is probably going to be what the differentiating factor is between it, the XF and X-type replacement is going to be, as per what the fronts of the old cars were when the rear ends were very similar. Design needs to go in cycles, as soon as this one is over for Jaguar, we may go back to the forms we are used to, but then again, they are forging a new path for themselves and I do like where it is going. |

This will be like the XF for me. I remember that I thought the XF was hideous when it was first released because of the concept, but once I saw one in person I really liked it.
The hardest bit to get used to is that back end though....

Honestly, I like it a lot, and can't wait to see it in person. The XF is easily the best looking car in its class, and this is much more interesting than what the germans are throwing in the ring. As for the haters, well, keep your old Jags. |

^See, I like it....from that angle. Greenhouse is too curved, butt's too much like a Pontiac G6 convertible's, but the aggressive front is just C-XF enough to work. I have higher hopes for this than the XF, for sure; we'll see.

As for Elle, not for me, not my thing. Isn't Jay's hair in a world of its own? ![]() As a mate said to me earlier, its great up to the C-Pillar, which I'd agree with, after that it all goes to the dogs. He did a photoshop where he lowered the boot line and squared it out a bit, looked fab. Just wish they'd actually done it to the car.

The front is good. However, from the start of the A Pillar is all goes wrong. It is way way way too fat especially at the back.

It looks good from the front and side, but that back is just horrible; doesn't go with the rest of the car at all.
The back lights are too close to each other; they should be separated all the way to the sides.

I like the front, although I was expecting to find a Volvo badge initially. Not sure about the rear, it certainly is different, guess I have to see one in the metal to make up my mind.
Overall, if you remove the badge there's nothing that screams Jaguar. About as exiting as 95% of all current sedans. |
