2010 Porsche 911 GT3 runs the 'Ring in 7:40, reps still claim Nissan GT-R is slower

The 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 is unquestionably bad-ass. Its naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six provides 435 hp from behind the driver's seat, and its track-tuned chassis can dance with the world's most nimble supercars. The free-wheeling product of Stuttgart has been undergoing testing at the famed Nurburgring in Germany (along with every other sports coupe worth its salt) and it's been timed at an unofficial 7:40. Porsche driving ace Walter Rohrl was behind the wheel for the sprightly lap.

While 7:40 isn't enough time to best the 7:26 from the 638 hp Corvette ZR1, it's a very impressive time nonetheless (BTW - During testing Rohrl posted a 7:45 in a borrowed Ferrari F430 Scuderia). Nissan probably isn't impressed, though, since it recently clocked the GT-R at 7:27. Well, Porsche is still calling balderdash on that claim, telling Motor Trend that the twin-turbo Nissan is only good for a time of 7:56 in stock US form. Just under eight minutes is an amazing time, but almost 30 seconds slower than reports from Nissan.

The Nissan vs. Porsche 'Ring smack-down feels as though its about to peter out, but the grudge match is almost to the point that the GT-R vs. GT3 drama should play out on premium cable. Who can we call to set this up?

Just quoting SportAuto here...
The Scuderia did a 7:39 in their Supertest.
The 997 pre facelift GT3 did a 7:48, which was before some parts of the ring were redone and gave you a couple of seconds advantage. 7:40 sounds easily believably to me... Even more awesome tires alone could make the time up...
They will test the ZR1 and the GTR once they can get a german model, this will happen for both cars in may (according to the issue that came out today...)
Whatever their time will be, I'll believe it. I doubt it's gonna be under 7:50, but if it were: How awesome would that be...!

What the hell, wasn't the Nissan's run of 7:27 done in the presence of several auto manufacturer's reps? I'm not taking any side because I like the GT3 and the GT-R but this 'Ring times war is getting a little old. Weather or atmospheric humidity can have a significant effect on the car's time on a track so long and with so many twists and turns. Both Nissan and Porsche can make very fast cars and we know that the only on that can settle this is him(on the TG track):

Nissan responds to Porsche's comments with action/

Today Porsche have released a Nurburgring lap time for the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3. Even minus the snails, this Porsche can really motor packing 435 hp and one of the most tuned chassis that money can buy. Via Motor Trend today we learned that Andreas Preuninger, Project Manager at Porsche announced that it’s capable of a 7:40 Nordschleife lap.

According to Motor Trend though, he goes further, and takes another swipe at Nissan. Apparently he’s quite focused on this test they performed where they couldn’t manage to get a GT-R under 7:54 at the same track.

Nissan says otherwise, and yesterday in testing, at the ‘Ring one upped themselves again bettering their previous best of 7:27.56 by almost a second to reel off a mind bending 7:26.7. They haven’t stopped either, another testing session is today.

Finer details on the GT-R’s new lap record forthcoming later and we’ll be sure to update you.

PS. I know you’re all hanging out for SpecV lap times but Mizuno-san has not agreed to allow any to be published so far. There are many reasons this could be so hang in there.

7:27 was done on optional tyres. The "overpriced, rip off option" V-Spec tyres.

Need an independent and well respected test. If they had the Stig drive both cars twice on the same day changing cars after every run. The cars need to be bought from a real dealer too.

They would have to actually stock the things, everywhere, just for one model. Besides, the cars are so different that 'winning' doesn't make a difference.

The fact is that they are stock tires that are available with the car. No one was complaining about the M3 CSL's time around the 'ring even though that has what look like near-slicks.

I think the GT3 already runs Cup tyres, which are good in dry conditions but start to suffer when its damn, cold or raining.

I think Nissan won already...no matter if their car really is slower than the 911. Obviously Nissan has been able to build a car with enough performance or hype that a company like Porsche needs to constantly make jabs and compete against. Who would of thought that we would be in a Porsche vs. Nissan rivalry? This is probably what Nissan wants and i think is making Porsche look bad.

That would be the Corvette ZR-1, but if the GT-R's new time is "real" then the ZR-1 hasn't completely thrashed it. But with how things are at GM I say this is the perfect opportunity for Ford to step up to the challenge. Though I could see Jag and Aston Martin using this to get themselves back into the market.
