Default Alfa Romeo 149 [Project 940]

Well, it is due to be launched in 2008/9, but I think there are some news that are not very good. First of all, it'll obviously be front wheel drive, as every new real world Alfa since '86 is, and will share the platform with the FIAT Bravo and Lancia δ HPE. The engines will likely be the 1.4 and 1.8 L petrol TurboJets, plus the 1.6 and 2.0 L diesel MultiJets. All this engines will be made in FIAT, not those useless Australian toys labelled as JTS. None of these are nowadays available for purchase. This new Alfa will be modelled using the gorgeous shapes of the 8C Competizione and the Kamal concept. But there are some problems... Although the platform is developed especially to support every kind of suspensions, the 149 will more-than-probably use McPhersons, which cost "a lot" less, instead of double wishbones. Moreover, it'll have an electric power steering rather than an hydraulic. Here alfisti are a bit disappointed because, after the half failure named 159/Brera, they expected FIAT, which has passed the economical crisis, to give Alfa more attention. So, here there are some photoshops:

Ugly little bugger. Especially the rear, it's a Lotus Elise rear with R34 lights fitted.

Well, these are only photoshops... No official pics, since the definitive design hasn't been approved yet. Oh, and I forgot to mention that it is going to be far bigger and more expensive than the present 147. Indeed, there will be another car to cover the lack of a low-profile hatchback, likely named Junior or Racer and based on the FIAT Grande Punto. But this is for sure.

Alfa stylist: "I know! Let's mix: Ferrari taillights; the body and front ends of the Brera and 8c; a diffuser; and the tailpipe of an R32! Because it's an Alfa, people will buy it anyway! Brilliant!"

Then again, they are photoshops. PLEEZE let it be beautiful (and export it to the states!)

Meaningless photoshops - but I've got faith in Alfa that it will look stunning.

Marchionne, the CEO, said exactly that the first wave of Alfas in the USA will be made only by 159/Brera and the exotic 8C. No plans to export the 149, therefore. But, being Americans slowly turning to smaller and less polluting car, that could be, maybe later in 2010.

I would like to use this topic to make a survey, only for non Italian people: how does Alfa look like in your country? How is it considered? Here FIAT's big bosses talk often of regaining a position abroad, but if it has no reputation how could they in a reasonably time?

Come on, that's not true, the headlights will be very, very close to the 8C's.

but the 8C's bonnet is shaped completely differently. Put those lights on a hatchback and it looks like a punto.

What's wrong with that? There are far worse crimes in the automotive industry than looking like a Brera. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
