Default Aluminium body Range Rover on the way

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...ncepts/225532/

Ok first of all ignore everything in that article except for the parts about Aluminium construction like Jaguars, the new engines, and possibly the hybrid drive.

Everything else in their is crap according to my sources. It is just Autocar taking some editorial license to spice up the article more.

Perhaps this will take care of that weight problem that seems to affect most of their lineup.

They are on the heavy side because of the over built unibodies and extra 4wd tech. The LR3/Disco 3 weighs nearly 5,800 lbs empty and has a GVWR over over 7,100 lbs. Most of the body panels on the LR3 are aluminium alloy too. I think all of them but the roof and rear fenders.

No, no, no you are mistaken. The old Range Rovers had mostly aluminium bodies but the frames were still steel. The new Range Rovers are unibody designs so just a few of the body panels(hood, front fenders, door skins, liftgate tailgate) are aluminium.

The next gen Range Rover will be all aluminium like the current XJ and XK. The entire unibody structure will be aluminium saving over 1,000 lbs.

Something is wrong with your cars when you can easily save 500kg making them.

The Aluminium technologies for structural componnents are recent I beleive. To get the strength and lightness necessary for a proper off roader as opposed to a soft roader is quite tricky - that is why there are so few proper off roaders that are OK on the road. If anyone can do this and make it work Land Rover can.

Gah... I had my final exam before summer yesterday, and got a little bit too much booze at the party afterwards, so I wasn't in my best shape this morning. I should have known that the aluminium body on steel ladder frame died with the P38. images/smilies/wallbash.gif
