Default Audi RS5 to come with a V10?

Edmunds.com is reporting that the upcoming Audi RS5 will have a V10 engine. Goodness, I wonder if that will fit within the engine bay of the B8 chassis. If so, it's a sure fire bet that the same motor will be in the next RS4. With AWD and V10 power, it'll be one ridiculous car. HP wars is good for all of us!

What's Edmunds' take?
A slick coupe with solid credentials, but why isn't this the top of the line? Expect to see an RS5 with a V10 shortly.

Or they can mount it behind the front wheel axle to make it mid-engined.

How are they going to do that, without having to completely reengineer the platform? The A5 which will be the basis for an RS 5 has the usual Audi setup, just look at this picture of the S5's engine, and note how the engine sits forward of the damper-towers...

Isn't it the S5 that has the v8, and the speculation is a RS5 will have a v10? Sweet Christ if they use the R8/Gallardo v10 in that thing :O Bye bye boxster!

I wish they would just stick to saloons. I dont care if its brilliant the best part about Audi is the elegantly discreet 4 door rockets

The S5 will get the S4s V8 not the RS4s, RS5 I presume will either have the RS4s, Why would they put a V8 in the R8 supercar and a V10 in a 2 door coupe?

The S6 currently has the V10, and reading some reports on it, it's not that quick. It may just be in a detuned state though.

They did re-engineer the platform and It doesn't follow the usual Audi setup.

Everything from electronics to drivetrains can be interchanged meaning that Audi will be able to customize architecture for each model as required.

MLP enables tremendous economies of scale by allowing Audi to start with one common platform for many different cars. From a functional perspective MLP moves the engine and transmission further back behind the axle which results in significantly improved handling and driving dynamics. In essence the A5 becomes more of a front/mid-engine layout with a reduced front overhang. source

Overall, the front axle is located a long way forward for a longitudinal engine configuration with front- and four-wheel drive. This new vehicle architecture makes it possible to have a long wheelbase with a short front overhang, and to optimise the axle load distribution. These are all additional elements that enhance the supreme handling qualities of the new Audi A5. To accomplish this special design, the engineers used a trick adopted from the Audi A8: the front axle differential is located in front of the clutch. source
I don't think those are strut towers, and even if they are you don't know the suspension geometry. I have been trying to find a cut-away of the chassis, but can't seem to find one. The audiusa.com has one or two cut-aways pictures, but they are in a animation that I couldn't copy an image from.

I am not sure what to think about this article. It sounds plausible. The S5 is being reported to have a FSI version of the S4 engine, very similar to the Rs4 engine but with different internals. So they may put a V10 in a RS5 or up the displacement on the RS4 V8, which seems more plausible to me. But everyone has to remember Nuvolari concept had a 600hp bi-turbo V10, so I am sure they can make a V10 fit in there, question is will they?

This picture is from the Geneva Autoshow, and shows the S5 with the bonnet open, the engine is clarely in front of the front axle like usual...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v158/Marcoscars4life/Div/IMG_3951-L.jpg

How Audi can call this mid-engined is, to me at least a mystery... Unless Audi's idea of mid-engined is between the front wheels and the radiator grille. images/smilies/lol.gif This is like the S6, which Audi said had a Lamborghini engine, when in fact after doing a bit of research EVO discovered that the S6 had a completely different engine sharing nothing but the drivetrain for the camshafts with the one found in the Gallardo...

More and more I think about it the more I feel that all this is just the Geneva Auto Show rumor mill rearing its head.

V10 biturbo will be in new RS6, S6 has now the detuned 435hp V10, S8 with 450hp. RS5 will probably have the same engine as in RS4. R8 will get new engines soonish, Gallardo needs to be taken to the next level first and it is going to happen this year.

Btw why S6 is sluggish, S8 is lighter, nuff said..

Here are the cut away pictures from the microsite, but still doesn't show much.

http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/5327/audis5mz6.jpg

Here's another picture from Geneva:

http://www.fourtitude.com/gallery/albums//Audi/A5-S5-RS5/S5%20Coupe/Introduction%20at%20the=2007%20Geneva%20Auto%20Show/093.jpg

Looks like the engine is over the front axle, but definitely not behind it. Maybe they did this to make extra room for the eventual V10?! Or since the same chassis has to be used in so many different configurations, this is just how it ended up.

Nope, my S4's engine hangs about 5 feet infront of the actual car. images/smilies/wink.gif

Trust me, there is no V10 coming to the RS5. A beefed up (read: RS4) V8 yes. A V10? No.

This would draw people away from the R8. Unless that is getting an engine upgrade as well. hmm...
