Default Auto students build soybean powered sportscar.

Crazy stuff right here:
Quote:
High school students from West Philadelphia High School have designed a sports car that can go from zero to 60 in four seconds and get more than 50 miles to the gallon on soy bean oil. CBS News reports that this unlikely car was the star last week at the Philadelphia Auto Show. Once again, are we seeing the fabled instance of revolutionary technology coming not from the big corporations, but from some unlikely garage. Maybe these guys will open source their design.
It doesn't say what they are using for an engine, but those stats are pretty impressive, and it looks like they are using a K1 Attack kit car for the chassis, very very cool stuff.

Saw this on [H] forums, sweet thing. If the do plan to sell it, its going to take at least 5 years to get it ready for the public.

the point is that performance and eco-friendliness can go hand in hand. a car that runs on one kind of organic oil can be made to run off another, the fuel itself isn't the main point here.

I saw this at the Philly Auto Show and had no idea what the hell I was looking at. Kinda looks like an Ascari KZ-1 if you as me. I dunno what exactly is the point of it is, but someone on Fark.com summed it up quite well....

How old are these guys? And they're still labeled "kids"? Jeez, it's not like they're a bunch of 10-year olds with crayons or something. Youths? Adolescents? Toddlers? Students? "Golly gee, those young'ums actually did something! Without hurting each other too much! Damn young people!" "Kids" seems pretty condescending.

Then again, if they were called teens, the article would probably go off ranting about why teen drivers should be massacred. No-win situation...

...neat car, too.

They bought the K-1 Attack kit and just put their own engine in it. http://www.k-1attack.com/menu.php

There has been many a story about schools buying the Attack and making it run on electric motors and stuff. I don't see what's the big deal; it's cool and all that they built the car but I've seen it all before.

West Philly representing!

well, i ,er, am actually in North Philly....

anyway, running it on soybean oil means renewable fuel source and less dependency on the middle east.

and ability to use soybean oil = ability to use refined/filtered used cooking oil=recycling=really cheap fuel and happy restaurant owners who dont have to pay hundreds of dollars per drum of used fry oil for removal.

i have a friend who turned an old(er) diesel 5 series BMW into a veggie burner. it really wasnt much work, and he now gets his fuel for free from the local fast food joints.

furthermore... imagine this - instead of the US gov't paying farmers subsidies because there is a glut of corn on the market, and the gov't paying farmers NOT to farm their land in order to keep prices higher, we turn all those fallow fields into bio-diesel producing factories, and gov't keeps the subsidy money, and the farmers actually make a profit on the open market. in the perfect world, the process and crops get so efficient that it becomes lucrative to EXPORT our diesel to other countries, thereby not only alleviating our need for oil, but building a demand for renewable energy produced in the US....

Please realize that the expensive soy bean oil posted was FOOD GRADE SMALL QUANTITY IN INDIVIDUAL CONTAINER! duh. fuel grade soybean oil would be MUCH cheaper, and given increased gas mileage, cheaper overall than gasoline.

but like I said, the fuel isn't the real point here.

How do they recharge the "ultra capacitor pack." The article/news cast doesn't point out that it can only do these 4 second 0-60 runds in for a short period before it runs out.
After the capacitor runs out it only runs on diesel. I wonder how it performs with just the diesel engine, 200hp in an 1800-2000lb car would probably kick some ass.

They probably recharge it through the usual method of regenerative braking.
