We're still sour that the Scirocco isn't making it to our shores, but Volkswagen is throwing us a bone with the restyled 2009 MK VI GTI. The new front end made a successful transition from the low-slung hatch that's beyond our reach, finally eschewing the gaping maw that's afflicted Audi designs of late. Both three- and five-door variants were on hand here at the Paris Motor Show, and overall, we're even more smitten with the six then we were with the outgoing model.

As reported previously, the new GTI is packing a revised 2.0-liter TFSI four putting out 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque through either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox and on to the front wheels through a new electronic limited-slip differential (XDS).

After spending some time inside were reminded why VW (and Audi) are making some of the best interiors in the biz, with suitably supportive seats, confident switchgear and a small diameter steering wheel that we want to put under our pillow at night.

I think I prefer the MK V GTI and the Scirocco over this. I just don't like the look of it...

Any more retro and they're going to start pumping out the old ones.

I like it though, hope it captures the same rock-star hooliganism idea that the Mk4 did. Keeping the plaid seats is a good start!

Why would someone buy the 3-door over the Scirocco? I think it looks better than this, and if I understand correctly, the Scirocco is close to a GTI as far as it mechanicals...

I'm a fan! It looks like the W12 concept without the kankles images/smilies/w00t.gif

Why buy the scirocco when you could have this? This has more power...

Only by 7hp...and if Wikipedia is at all accurate on the weights...the GTI is 400-1,200 lbs heavier than the Scirocco.

That said...2,300lbs for the Scirocco seems, oh, maybe just a WEEEE bit optimistic. *laughs*

I'm liking the details on it. Almost prefer it to the Scirocco in some ways.

I like. The fabric used on those front seats is still images/smilies/love.gif

But this looks like a sort of mix between the old GTI and the Scirocco. The Scirocco is prettier though, so I see no reason whatsoever for buying a 3 door GTI...

5 door GTI is where it's at though

Sweet, they've kept the tartan seat trim. I like - it's not shouty, but that's okay, a GTI shouldn't be.

Don't like the steering wheel...too small for all those buttons.

I like the older GTI models better (Belgian Gendarmerie used to drive those)

Why do they need this when they've got the Scirocco? Which is just better images/smilies/smile.gif

No, seriously. There might be sense in the 5-door model, but why bring out a model which is almost identical to the Scirocco with the 3-door? Even the looks are almost the same, which means that they're gonna split the same market - and that means less sales for both of them. As Clarkson once put it: "I have two legs, so I'll shoot me in this one!"

Or, considering that Scirocco is based on Mk V GTi, and this is more advanced (being the Mk VI), then it will kill off the Scirocco. Still I don't see any sense behind it.

You guys talk about the Scirocco being better, but isn't that model not coming to the U.S.?

I don't say this often with a new car, but I think this is a big improvement over the MkV.

Kind of weird though, seeing as how the MkV GTI has only been available in North America for about 2 years. The one issue I had with the MkV was that it looked a little unconventional and sort of resembled a type of critter with those big headlamps and long honeycomb grille.

I think this looks sporty in a much more subtle way... it's like they took design cues from the new Scirocco, then went and de-uglified it.

How come the rims are the exact same though? They're very nice, but in the least and update would be appreciated. I'll be looking forward to see one in the flesh when they hit NA hopefully by 2015. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I think it looks great.

Despite what they say, rumors suggest that there will be a R32.

I thought exactly the same looking at the pictures.

Boring, Dull, souless... etc. and many other synonyms come to my head when I think about the New Golf/GTi. I'll take a Scirocco please!
