Default Bad news for new Camaro owners

Looks like it won't be winning any reliability rewards.

Facia cracks at 155mph+
http://jalopnik.com/5238125/camaro-g...-at-high-speed

Dies at less then 40 miles.
http://jalopnik.com/5232715/first-ca...rom-dealership

Hopefully these will be fixed easily and soon.

Dying less than 40 miles from the dealership, considering all the development time and extensive testing, shouldn't have happened.

Want to bet more problems surface? GM needed to hit the Camaro launch perfectly and it looks like they're muffing it.

Edit: From the article -

Quote:
Maybe worse than the first Camaro wreck is the first Chevy Camaro breakdown. This "p**sy magnet" Bumblebee-yellow Camaro lost all electrical power and coasted to a stop with a scant 40 miles on the odometer.

The ecstatic new owner, a forum fan-girl by the name of BUMLB, was crushed when the car conked-out cruising through a parking lot at a leisurely 5 MPH, completely losing all electrical power, locking the gear selector and the key in the ignition. A flatbed towed the disabled car to a dealer where diagnosis found the cable running from the trunk mounted battery had frayed on the starter motor and grounded out, causing complete loss of power. A new cable running a different route will be installed at the dealer. Hopefully this isn't something we'll be seeing more of on other cars. Source: Camaro5
Oh yeah, that's a HUGE screwup. Can you say "recall"??? If they'd done real testing, they would have caught that. Just business as usual at GM.

Add to that this bit of bodging/idiocy also from Jalopnik:

2010 Chevy Camaro Gets Mysterious Brake Weights
By Ben Wojdyla, 12:30 PM on Wed Apr 22 2009, 22,346 views

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/jalopnik/2009/04/Camaro_brake_weights.jpg

Forumites at Camaro5 have been collectively scratching their heads for a couple days, wondering why there appear to be two layers of lead wheel weights stuck onto their brake calipers. It's a mystery Charlie Brown!

The confusion started when a poster uploaded an image of his new Camaro's Brembo calipers, on which were riding two rows of lead weights, normally affixed to the inside of a wheel rim to balance the tire. This led everyone with a Camaro to run outside to see it their mullet machine's also had the weights, which they do, at least on among the folks on the forum. GM has not answered to the confusion yet, but the leading theory is they were place on the caliper as a quick and dirty fix to alleviate brake squeal. From a physics perspective, this explanation is plausible, as resonant frequency is in large part determined by mass, and by changing the vibrating mass of the caliper with the weights, a troublesome squeal would be eliminated for a particular driving condition.

The trouble is if they're using normal brake weights, the heat cycling of the caliper will eventually cause the adhesive to fail and, if things get too serious on the track, the lead could actually melt. Though it's an odd issue and not really a big deal, we'll be keeping you in on the loop during Camaro brake-gate, though we recommend Camaro owners visit their local dealer and have their muffler bearings, blinker fluid, and piston-return springs checked out, just in case. Click here for the high-resolution image. Thanks for the tip Ethan! {Camaro5}

Just thought of this:

You have no right to talk about electrics mister jaguar, i worked on the XJ12 in my drive for almost 3 years before giving up and selling it for 500 dollars, i was so sick of it i couldnt even be assed to dig around for the title.

images/smilies/smile.gif And i wouldn't buy a 2010 for the same reason i wouldnt buy a 1983 or 1993, first year models always have little problems and flukes.

(Cracking facia was an early production fault that has been fixed)

You know, the guy who bought your XJ12 showed up on the Jag forums (I think). He had the fuel pumps and other problems fixed in about two hours.

See, he bought something called "a factory manual" which included "wiring diagrams." This aided him in resolving problems. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I'm not defending GM or saying it's a good car. But, as a general rule, you never buy the first year on any new model because of the very reasons you see here. No amount of development is going to stop weird shit from happening when you mass produce a complex machine such as a car.

GM has had 100 years to figure out how not to fuck up the introduction of a car, to say nothing of a highly-anticipated game-changer that's been publicized for longer than they've been under the government teat. Not to mention there is absolutely no new technology that is likely to have teething troubles. Like, say, a hybrid drivetrain.
