Default Detroit Auto Show: Dodge Viper SRT-10 Mopar concept

Thanks to FliPP for posting this on IRC. images/smilies/love.gif

Quote:
While the new 600-horsepower Viper was attracting all the press at the Detroit show like so many moths to a flame, around back at the Dodge booth sat a tricked out beast dripping venom from its fangs, a showcase of what the Chrysler Group's aftermarket performance division Mopar has in store for the company's juiced up new flagship.

As impressive as the magic 600-horsepower figure is in the new Viper, it's no huge mystery how Dodge squeezed out the extra 90 horses over the old model. "No replacement for displacement" is the name of the game, and the Viper's engine is a monstrous 8.4-liter V10 from which Mopar tapped an additional 75 horses (thanks largely to better cooling) for a total of 675. (Yes, that's right... 675 horsepower. In one car.)

To go with the added juice, Mopar fitted an adjustable suspension and blacked-out 19" lightweight alloy wheels with accompanying Michelin rubber. The Mopar Viper was also displayed in a striking anthracite-gray paint job with an offset neon-red stripe running up the front, over the roof and on to the giant rear wing. You know, just in case the *ahem* ordinary Viper wasn't visually imposing enough.
675 naturally produced HP! Bwah ha ha! images/smilies/vampire.gif

There is no replacement for displacement.
- Wolfgang Bernhard, Chief Operating Officer, Chrysler Group talking about the Dodge Viper SRT-10

... I ask Herb Helbig, vehicle synthesis manager for SRT and a member of the original Team Viper development group since day one, if they'd ever thought of adding traction control. "It comes with two," he says, pointing at my feet. "Learn to use them." Got it.

If Satan were at that auto show, he'd leave in this car.

Great car, shame about the rice-tastic rear spoiler and carbon front lip....

I guess Formula 1 V10s. For relative power anyway but I guess even for absolute.

Ya, um, that lame wing is kinda needed on a car like this, for downforce, to get the 675 horsepower to the road. Everyday cars do not need wings because they never really spoil unfavorable air movement. Ricers wanted their cars to look like race cars so they took spoilers. This car is not about looks this is the real deal i could car less the lights or the curves as long as the engine is huge.

Yes, because the spoiler does so much from a standing start...and when you get up high enough for it to matter, I'd rather stay in a higher gear, and not have that huge wing on the back which HAS to limit the top speed by about 100mph...

The wing is primarily to keep the back end settled at speed. Remember what happened to the CCX on the Top Gear track without the wing? Now, tell me why you don't need downforce.

Because if I had a car this expensive, I'm not brave/skilled enough to drive it at the limit to the point where I'm at the car's limits of adhesion at 180mph. I'd go fast in a straight line, but you're not going to see me being THAT ballsy on the country roads! :-p

BTW: Didn't that tiny wing on the CCX lower the top speed by, like, 7 mph? It was at least 3...so this wing has GOT to be like trying to run in the wind with a parachute strapped to your back.
