Default Frankfurt Motor Show: Volkswagen Beetle, Golf, Touran

http://www.channel4.com/4car/media/motorshows/frankfurt2005/03-large/volkswagen-golf-gt.jpg

With the launch of the upmarket Eos, the Beetle Cabriolet and Beetle itself will get cheaper, the former positioned more as an entry-level fun car. UK pricing for 2006 is yet to be announced, but the latest drop-top Bugs, and their hatchback equivalents, have received a (very) minor makeover. This comprises tweaked headlights, taillights, bumpers and wings, as seen on the Beetle Ragster concept car shown in Detroit last January.

Two hot new versions of the Golf have made their debut: the GT and the latest R32. The GT, which will go on sale at the end of the year, features Volkswagen's new Twincharger technology - a combined turbocharger/supercharger system - with its four-cylinder 1.4 direct-injection petrol engine to deliver 170bhp. Though the "TSI" engine's small, it can deliver acceleration 0-60mph in just 7.9 seconds. Alternatively, there'll be a diesel GT, also producing 170bhp from a 2.0 TDI engine; this will accelerate 0-60 in 8.2 seconds. The GTs will, says VW, "be launched with their own individual styling and equipment", which means a sort of junior-GTI or GTI-lookalike specification. The Golf R32, on the other hand, will be the top-end Golf option: 250 bhp, 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, permanent four-wheel drive and optional DSG transmission. It goes on sale at the end of September.

The 170bhp 1.4 TSI and 170bhp 2.0 TDI engines will also be offered in the Touran MPV; the petrol engine will come in 140bhp tune, too. Sales of these versions will start in Germany from December, with right-hand drive versions next spring. Further new Volkswagen variants announced include Passat saloons and estates with the 3.2 V6 FSI engine (250bhp) and 4Motion four-wheel drive, on sale at the end of the year, and Phaeton and Touareg W12 models with increased performance (output of the monster W12 engine upped by 30bhp to 450bhp, torque up by 10Nm and peaking lower down the rev range). Across the range, enhancements include a USB interface in Golf, Golf Plus, Jetta and Touran models giving MP3 or similar compatibility with the standard in-dash audio system.
