Bio-diesel has no sulfur, which is why it tends not to smoke.
It's not Bio-diesel they use in their race cars but synthetic diesel. It's made by turning natural gas or coal into a liquid using the Fischer-Tropsch process. This process can also turn bio-mass into diesel and has lower particulates and reduced sulphur content.

Commodore is 5 series size (if not slightly larger) and the LWD statesman is 7 series size

looks like a nice engine..... hopefully it has the refinement and MPG in it to match or beat the germans/french V6 diesels.

Lean combustion is the cause of NOx. Excessive oxygen, combined with excess heat (caused by the lean burn) creates NOx. Keep the combustion temps down and NOx goes down.
is that why some are going the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) route?

recirculate the gases to burn any unburnt hydrocarbons and reduce flame temperatures?

I'm far from qualified from answering that question, but from what I have read, on petrol/gas engines, EGR does reduce combustion temps as well as creating for higher compression at light loads with improved fuel economy.
