A Russian billionaire has bought Adolf Hitler’s Mercedes after commissioning a Düsseldorf antique car dealer to locate it in a painstaking search, Cologne daily Express reported on Monday.

In the end Fröhlich spent weeks searching for the vehicle, estimated to be worth between €4 and €10 million.

“No one wanted come out with it,” he said, adding that it was a “delicate subject.”

But he finally discovered that after the Second World War ended the car had been sold in Austria before it landed in the Imperial Palace care museum in Las Vegas. From there it went to a brewery mogul’s collection in Munich, but the man's widow sold the car in 2008.

Last Wednesday someone finally gave Fröhlich a tip on the most recent owner, and the Russian billionaire arrived in Germany via private jet on Friday to broker a deal, he said.

The antique dealer procured the car’s original papers and repair logs and matched the licence plate number - 1A 148461 – to old photos of Hitler in the vehicle during a parade.

He also checked with the public prosecutor’s office to ensure that the auto sale was legal.

“There are no objections – as long as there are no visible Nazi symbols,” he told the paper.

The Russian billionaire bought all six Nazi vehicles from the Bielefeld collector. Hitler’s vehicle will go to Moscow, and the other six will be sold by Fröhlich on his behalf, he said.
