Amen to that

Lets put it into perspective

Taxable income __________ Tax on this income
$0 $6,000 ______________ Nil
$6,001 – $34,000 ________ 15c for each $1 over $6,000
$34,001 – $80,000 _______ $4,200 plus 30c for each $1 over $34,000
$80,001 – $180,000 ______ $18,000 plus 40c for each $1 over $80,000
Over $180,000 __________ $58,000 plus 45c for each $1 over $180,000

Again, the tax brackets do not include the 1.5% Medicare levy. All figures are in Australian Dollars.

And just think, under Clinton, those poor people in the lowest bracket initially had to pay 15%! Nice, huh? The Bush tax breaks dropped it by 5%, but I tend to think we could probably afford to cut tax to that bracket altogether and not lose anything (since most everyone that would be in that bracket is probably on public assistance and doesn't have to pay anyway).

More on the original topic, here is what the current US and Texas gas tax situation is:

Federal gas excise tax: 18.4 cpg for gasoline and 24.4 cpg for diesel. (CPG = cents per gallon)
Texas state gas tax: 20 cpg for gas and diesel. No additional taxes may be charged.

That's normal all over Europe, not only in Germany. It's the same story with alcohol by the way images/smilies/wink.gif Tax on tax makes it easier to hide the real tax rate. images/smilies/sad.gif
