New Guinness World Record for top speed in a street-legal car

    http://www.autoblog.com/2012/10/31/w...standing-mile/

The BADD Ford GT built by Performance Power Racing – with the help of its two whirlygigs hanging out back and a fancy new metal called "Pandalloy" – set two records last week at Florida's Kennedy Space Center. From a standstill, the twin-turbo powerhouse got up to 283.232 miles per hour in just 5,280 feet, as measured by Tag Heuer timekeeping.

That meant a new record in the standing mile as well as a Guinness World Record for top speed in a street-legal car. And that means the engineers in Molsheim, home to Bugatti, just might spend this evening getting to work on something even faster.

So, some men in a shed made a car faster and more powerful than the best VAG could come up with....

Bugatti guys better aim high - as he said, he's aiming for 300.

Yeah, just wondering how reliable will that be. Remember that Bugatti sets to make their cars last for 10-20 years. I would imagine this would blow up after the first 100 miles if you'd try to drive it through and german autobahn

The fastest production car is still the Veyron SuperSport right? This looks like a one off jumped-up Ford.

    Exactly. Street-legal != production.

Parachutes and slicks, so it's a slow dragster.

Srsly. Its impressive no doubt, but its nothing like a Veyron or similar. Its most definately not as reliable or even "everyday-usable", or many other attributes a Veyron is. Its a fast car, no doubt, but besides going very fast in a straight line, it can't do much. Oh and this "street legal" is something very depending on where you are. I am somewhat sure german TÜV would have its issues with stuff like... well for startes a freaking PARACHUTE because its breaks can't deal with it.

    http://www.autoblog.com/2012/10/29/b...0-60-mph-time/

At some point, someone is going to have to hand the minds at Bugatti a physics book and tell them to settle down. Automobile reports the monarch of the Volkswagen stable is out to eclipse its own ludicrous performance threshold by building a new Super Veyron capable of snapping to 60 mph in 1.8 seconds. How? The company plans to shove even more carbon fiber at the ultracar while also turning up the horsepower. Rumor has it the machine will boast either an 8.0- or 9.6-liter W16 engine good for 1,600 horsepower, which should be enough to nudge the vehicle's top end from 259 mph all the way to 288 mph.

All told, the Über Veyron will hold a 550-pound advantage over its predecessor for a power to weight ratio of 2.2 lb/hp. How much will one of these things cost you? Expect to pony up $2.5 million for the privilege of ownership. That is, if it makes it to production.
Bugatti doesn't seem to be sitting on their metaphorical hands either.

Don't you always moan about three-point seat belts being mandatory? This doesn't have three-point belts. How can it be legal?

I'd first like to see the face of the TÜV inspector when you try to get your parachute approved.

I would like to see a Veyron, this, and other competitors have a different test. Instead of doing speeds tests, send them on a road trip across the United States from New England to Southern California. Tally the number and magnitude of breakdowns and measure the comfort of all the drivers. If you want to talk street legal cars, that there is the ultimate test.

The three point belts are actually still in the car, IIRC. That still makes it legal.

Why don't you do that in your cars and stop moaning about the belts?

Because you are only allowed to have them aftermarket (cannot be installed at time of manufacture/import) and whilst driving on the street you can only use the three point belts to be legal. You can have the racing harnesses in the car, but you can't use them as the primary restraint on the street.

    Yes, it's stupid.

In other words, Spectre says that record wasn't done while street-legal.

Nope. The car was, in fact, street legal as it met the FMVSS standards. Seatbelt laws are decided at the state level.

"Street legal" is one of the stupidest things to argue over. Around here, if you know the right people, you can get anything passed really, as long as the readiness monitors are good to go and no codes being thrown.

    IE: my friend's car.

Her (^that) car passed inspection easy, so it wouldn't be hard to get that FGT to pass either. A chute? Wow, that would be impossible to take off...or ignore like all the other things. I'm sure the Big Stuff 3 is a hassle to pass as well.

Also on the list of stupid things is that video comparing itself to the Veyron. Built car vs production car...even being a big FGT fan, it's a stupid argument.

Violating state laws is illegal, no?

Yup, but states can specify different places where seat belts must be used and where they are optional. Texas, for example, does require you to use the three point belts (as 'recommended' by the Feds) if your vehicle was originally equipped with them if you are on an open public road. It does not require you to use them in, say, the Big Bend Open Road Race (though the BBORR has its own rules) which takes place on public roads closed off to other vehicles.

In addition, the car would still be street legal even if the guy was wearing the racing harness and not the three point belt. Not using the three point belt doesn't make the car itself not street legal, just like driving drunk won't invalidate the car's street-legal status.
