Default New No. 1 car maker in the world is... Volkswagen!

Yes, it's true.

They wanted to achieve that goal by 2018 but obviously the economical crisis with its upheavels has helped them to already achieve it now.

In the first 9 months of 2009 Vokswagen AG (including Porsche) sold 4.4 million cars and utilitiy vehicles.

Toyota only sold 4 million.

3rd place goes to Ford with 3.7 sold cars and GM is cut down to 4th place, having sold 3.6 million cars this year so far.

Now the trick is staying there. Both GM and Toyota suffered from quality and boring products while at the spot.

The only thing consistent about the top three manufacturers is that Ford seems to be locked in at #3.

How about the most profitable?

Oh btw thank you Major Ivan Hirst.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Hirst

"The original intention was to scrap the factory and use the proceeds as war reparations. But the young Briton found that the factory could be used to produce cars for the British Army. Hence, Hirst and Radclyffe laid the foundations for Volkswagen's successful automotive business."

Well, while Toyota is expecting a loss of billions this year, Volkswagen currently "only" has decreased profits -- with a big part resulting from the end of the German cash for clunkers program.

Made some sales here too for our version of the same scheme - small motors seem to benefit mostly.

VWs are real quality but the dealers here are rubbish - well around here they are. Friend has a pair of Golfs (ones the Mrs.) and uses a dealership in Somerset they are so bad here.

It's interesting that no matter where you go in the world VW dealerships only seem to hire retards. But the cars are nice. Hooray for VW! I want a Polo!

Over here VWs are crap for reliability and expensive to repair. Not a good combo.

Agreed. VWs reputation in the US is not the best. Start from either coast and move inland and the number of VWs you see on the road decreases dramatically. With more US focused products like the new uber-Passat coming, they might be able to hold their position against Toyota, who sells more cars in the US than anyone else. Then again, VW also came up with the disaster known as the Routan.

Toyota was once #1. Then came the lawsuits, accusations and recalls.

And now that they are number one, I am obliged to hate them. Isn't that what popular sentiment calls for?

In Australia, they hire the snootiest people they can find. When I was car shopping last year, I looked at the Polo GTI and the bird at the dealership treated me like I was some kind of peasant. I was expecting her to say 'go away little man, and come back and see me when you can afford an Audi'. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
