Default New VW Pickup - the Robust

From Autoblog:

Quote:
http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/vw1_opt.jpg
Volkswagen's entry into the "one-ton" truck fray has officially hit the Web before its proper unveiling at the 62nd IAA Commercial Vehicles Show, and although it's only called the "Concept Pickup" for now, this spartan work truck is what consumers in South America and other emerging markets (not the U.S. and Europe) will likely know as the Robust when it goes into production In Pacheco, Argentina next year.

Blending V-Dub style with a profile reminiscent of the Honda Ridgeline, the double-cab concept is tarted up with SAR badges, a functional light bar and all the life-saving tools that you'd find in a coastal search-and-rescue-mobile, include a Baywatch-style "can" in the bed.

We're partial to the massive grille and deep air dam that spans the fascia, along with the bars flanking the bed and the incredibly production-ready interior. Both gasoline and diesel powerplants will be available when the production version goes on sale next year, and if it were 1995, we'd loved to see the VW pickup available in the U.S.

I hate 4-door pick ups! they look like shit!
I'd take a 3rd gen C/K over any modern truck any day of the week!

Well, you can't adjust your seat in a 1 row pick up and I prefer my driving position a bit more laid back than regular.

Kinda looks like a Nissan Titan with a VW nose. Looks pretty good, though very un-VW-ish.

Seriously, that's production ready, have a look at the interior! The pedals don't even have an alloy finish, this is ready for showrooms as-is.

I like VW's but not a VW truck. Other than the beetle truck which was wonky cool this is just meh. If I was going to buy a truck I have Mazda, Ford, S-10, the Ram series plenty of great big trucks, mid size trucks, small workhorse trucks.

Personally just think I would rather buy a new VW that is like half UP half Jeep. Kinda like a little run around car that you bang around in one that would be really minimalist and simple. Plus I want more cars that you can remove the doors on.

Is it just me or does this look WAY to small to be taken seriously in the 1 ton market? Toyota's newest 1 ton is a huge dualie with a 8 liter engine that puts out nearly 600 ft/lbs, does VW even have an engine that can compete in the truck market? It looks like a run of the mill 1/2 ton to me?

Sorry but if I am the market for a truck Germany is the last stop on my tour of dealerships.

It doesn't have to be massive to carry 1tonne, ford's ute (non sports model) can carry 1240kg as a cab chassis or with a traditional box 1075kg.

Assuming that means it won't come to the US ,I approve. Even though it looks nice I wouldn't want another truck on the roads and flat out I don't think it would sell here. It was tough enough for Honda and Toyota to really sink in the truck market but now VW? I don't think so.

The point of a truck is to have a bed to throw stuff in and haul around. That doesn't have the space it would need- it looks like they just top the top off the rear end of a van.
