If you're looking at the cars on paper, look at everything. Nissan spent 2 years in the wind tunnel making an incredibly slippery car that creates downforce at both axles. |

Great read. It would be good for Drivers Republic to do their telemetry tests of a GTR and 911 Turbo at the ring.

Concerning the japanese gentlemans agreement concerning limiting horsepower to 280hp. On paper they were rated at 280hp but many people who dyno tuned the R32-R34 GT-Rs found that they were making around 320-330hp. I think that there is a strong possibility that the GT-R is making more than the claimed 480hp.

An interesting read for sure, especially the insight on how differently 'ring times can be archieved. Nevertheless, the GT-R has been run around other tracks faster than a 911 Turbo as well, so given that it actually is slower than the Porsche as they claim, something must have been wrong in every test session on every track.

It was a good read with some decent points that I happen to agree with, but let me just restate this... Porsche claims that the PDK gearbox shaves 8 seconds off the 911's 'ring time. The GT-R has one of the best twin clutch boxes available (or so I've heard). Add 8 seconds to the GT-R's claimed 7.29 and what do you get? The same time Porsche claims for the Turbo (as driven by an engineer - not ex F-1 driver), 7.38. Ignore the 'ring times, every other independent track test has the GT-R either level pegging with, or ahead of the Turbo. Some of those tests were with full production cars, like Chris Harris driving a car someone imported to the UK privately. |

Frankly, I think the fact Porsche felt the need to do this is a massive pat on the back for the team at Nissan behind the GT-R.

Has anyone seen a statement from Porsche about this?

But they still fear the Gov stepping in, that's why Nissan underrated the GT-R's power (matching the claim to that of the Turbo's output) and tried their darndest to make it as "untuneable" as they could.

1. Its not a straight, no matter how it appears on Google Earth. The top section in particular before the ''old'' entrance (where the timing for these runs is started/stopped) has a fairly sharp kink to the left. 2. There are a series of technical corners preceding the ''straight'', right the way from the Karussell, its arguably the most technical section of the entire Northloop. Therefore, the 'race' along the final stretch has nothing to do with a drag race, by the time they reach the bottom of the 'straight' they'll likely be hitting the terminal speeds they'd reach in a 400m run. Its all about mid-top end grunt, and being able to keep the pace from the earlier sections of 6-7km or so. Oh, and yes the Gentlemans agreement was scrapped, hence the rating of the GTR. Quote:

From that list, the record was apparently set in August. The last recorded time from Basseng was in 2007.

Yes, Nissan are now trying their best to at least appear to be a socially responsible company and the only reason for that is their fear of potential restrictions being imposed (they would only affect the local market). |

The GT-R was actually 4.6 seconds faster round Silverstone than the 911 (an eternity) and lost by a nose in the standing start drag race (which has no bearing on a flying lap). Oh, and Chris Harris was one of the guys in the vid and he tested the Turbo and GT-R side by side and the GT-R came out on top. If Porsche claim that the PDK box takes 8 sec off the 911's time at the 'ring then it's a safe bet that it will do at least the same for the Turbo, meaning that when they fit one the Turbo will be lapping the 'ring faster than the Nissan and the Universe will once again be in perfect harmony.
