Preproduction/production 2008 Pontiac G8 GT photos (see the changes)

Earlier this year, General Motors revealed a prototype version of the 2008 Pontiac G8 GT sports sedan. The automaker has since touted a production-ready version of the G8 at numerous events, including the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Based on the Commodore from GM's Holden subsidiary in Australia, the G8 will serve as a replacement to the aging Grand Prix. There appears to be only a few minor tweaks to the G8 we last saw, including revised wheels.

    The base model features a 261 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 with 250 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful G8 GT delivers 362 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque thanks to a 6.0-liter V8.

The basic G8 features a five-speed automatic with manual mode, while the GT version is offered with either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearbox.

Curb weight for the V6 model is 3,885 lbs, while the GT weighs just five pounds shy of 4,000. 18-inch wheels come standard, while 19-inch alloys can be ordered with the GT model.

The sedan rides on GM's new Zeta rear-wheel-drive platform, which underpins the 2009 Camaro and the next-generation Impala, in addition to several other planned vehicles.

G8 deliveries are expected to begin in August — a relatively short lead time made possible by some very effective badge engineering. Pricing has not been released but expect the GT to start in the low $30,000 range.

Not bad, I like it, assuming it's RWD.

How much less will this be compared to an Altima to still be under sold. The tail lights look like they are bought from the same manufacture. I do like where they put the window controls reminds me of older SAAB models.

Yeah the window controls is a proven cost saving measure when you have cars being built as both RHD and LHD. Mercedes, BMW and older Land Rovers all used to do that.

At least it will be RWD, and offered with a manual, something GM is slowly realizing that Americans still want! Otherwise, it is a pretty handsome brute, all the good Pontiac styling cues on the front.

No; but GM is getting back to where they should be competitive again. Example:

Interesting that it only has the SS interior as a opposed to the SS-V interior (with big colour screen in the middle - perhaps it's an optional extra)

I think they should bring the whole range over here, including the one with the 3.6l V6 (not that stupid piece of junk that they call the 3.5L V6).

Where are you getting your info?

If you go to the Pontiac website is says that the base G8 will be coming with a 261hp 3.6l V6. The G8 is using the same engines as the Holden.

I thought that interior was the Omega spec, then again, I don't know much about VEs.

    Looks alright, though.

Just as well you didn't get the base-spec one with the lower-tune V6 and the four speed automatic :p

I'm surprised they don't offer an LS2 version there, but that could be later.

Lets compare the Pontiac G8 to the Dodge Charger.

    Dodge Charger:
    SE: 2.7l V6 - 190hp 190 ft·lbf
    SE/SXT: 3.5l V6 - 250hp 250 ft·lbf
    R/T: 5.7l V8 - 340hp 390 ft·lbf
    Daytona R/T: 5.7l V8 - 350hp 390 ft·lbf
    SRT-8/Super Bee: 6.1l V8 - 425 hp 420 ft·lbf

    Pontiac G8:
    Base: 3.6l V6 - 261 hp 250 ft·lbf
    GT: 6.0l V8 - 362 hp 391 ft·lbf

We are not entirely certain as of yet about the addition engines that will be offered with the G8. When the G8 first goes on sale it will be offered with the 3.6l and the 6.0l.

General Motors has yet to confirm or deny the existence of a future GTP or GXP model of the upcoming G8, however high performance models direct from Australia have been spotted in Detroit before. A June 17th, 2007 posting on the website Autoblog had photographs of a Holden HSV Clubsport R8 testing in Troy, Michigan, located just outside of Detroit. The model in question is powered by a 414 BHP version of the LS2 V8 found in the Chevrolet Corvette, and can propel the car to sixty miles per hour in roughly five seconds. Similar models are also sold in the United Kingdom with a Vauxhall badge, and is known as the Vauxhall VXR8. It is unknown if the Clubsport R8 would be used as a GTP or GXP model, given that another HSV model, the GTS-R, is in the works powered by the Corvette Z06's LS7 V8, producing upwards of 500 BHP.

It looks kind of bland to me, I was expecting it to look loud and ostentatious.
