Honestly, what happened to making cars actually look different from the front? Why do Porsche insist on putting (old) 911 style front ends on everything? Admittedly it's only a render, but I expect it will have a 911 front end grafted on.

I watched the Ultimate Factories video about Porsche, and I think its mostly for efficiency. They Boxster, Cayman, and 911's are all made on the exact same assembly line. Based on what that video showed me, I bet its simply for efficiency and cost savings. And its a brand-identity thing as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the Panamera and Cayenne are done similarly.

Ugh. It looks horribly derivative.

When the original 928 was released in the 70s, the best thing about it was that it looked radical yet timeless. IMHO, Porsche would do better to base their new 928 heavily on the old 928 shape, save for a few tweaks to bring it up to modern safety standards.

The great thing about modern Grand Tourers is that the styling tells the story of the manufacturer; a Maserati looks like a Maserati, an Aston Martin looks like an Aston Martin, and so on. Even though the old 928 doesn't look like a 911, it still looks like a Porsche. All that render says is 'we have no fucking idea who we are or who will buy this', and is full of fail and confusion. Not a good image to portray at this end of the market.

Just look at Autoexpress' past for how much like their renderings the cars actually look.

I am very skeptical about any car called a 928 that uses another platform. The thing about the original car was that it was designed to be the best car made in its day with no shortcuts taken in engineering it, and this is just simply a GT car based on the Panamera. Call me a bit nostalgic, but I'm just not sure how this could really fill the shoes of the 928.

Remember the lesson Porsche learned during the 80's.

NO car can intrude on the 911's turf. I.E. 928 and 944 Turbo.

The 928 was intended to replace the 911. The 944 Turbo intruded on the 911 Turbo's turf at 1/2 the price. That's why there was no 968 Turbo when the 968 replaced the 944.

The 911 is the status symbol that the badge-whore customers demand, and must be protected and held up on a pedestal at all costs.

That's why the properly-designed Cayman is held down, and prevented from being as good as it could be.

And that's pretty much the exact reason why I know this car will disappoint me. I have nothing wrong with Porsche's philosophy of keeping the 911 on top, but the 928 is one of those cars which shouldn't be half assed. I just don't see how they can stay true to the history of the car while at the same time not overshadowing the 911 in some ways.
