Default Spied in America: 2008 Smart ForTwo

Quote:
Leftlane News reader Gerhard Rivera snapped some great photos of the forthcoming 2008 Smart ForTwo in testing in the United States. Spotted at a gas station in the Colorado Rockies, the car is one of the first Smart prototypes we've heard of being in America. In late June, DaimlerChrysler announced it would bring the Smart brand to the United States in 2008. These photos confirm that the ForTwo will get a new headlight design to reflect the change at sister company Mercedes from dual-oval headlamps to sleeker one-piece lights.

I would be scared to drive this thing in the states. Crash into anything bigger than a bicycle and you're screwed.

I've seen a couple of Smarts running around here. But these were in private owner hands, probably second hand imports.

Will it stop three tons of truck traveling about 20mph?

I'm truly scared. If I would happen to rear end one of those in my Discovery it looks like the Smart WOULD be totalled. Heck the motorcycle is just as big as the car! Maybe this is some twisted way of thinning out the herd. images/smilies/ohmy.gif And is that another one I see at the very right hand side of the last picture?

I would buy one for commuting. You are probably just as safe in that as you would be in any other car. The LAST vehicle I would want to be in is one with a body on frame, like a truck, because the occupants are the ones absorb the shock, not the vehicle.

Bigger is not better.

Size doesn't equal safety. What happens when a bullet hits an elephant?

Remember on Fifth Gear when they slammed the Smart into the barrier at 60mph? It just bounced off.

If it's solid enough it might just bury itself into bigger cars. If they get good airbags it might be pretty good.

Theres quite a few smart cars around where I live images/smilies/mellow.gif

can't say I'd want to be hit by a transport or any truck for that matter. It'd be like getting tossed around a phone booth. The car is probably quite strong and such, but it just seems like it would go flying a roll if it was hit really hard.

That's exactly what I was just going to say. Ask and ye shall recieve: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ao_C89CgR8

All the Smart is, is a steel Sharkcage with wheels. After seeing this test I'd feel safer in the For2 than my 1997 GTi.

There are a few Smarts at my Merc dealer as well, I don't know if they are selling since they constantly are rotating the cars around in the lot.

I just don't get how these small cars are considered safe images/smilies/wacko.gif I don't care how many stars it got in Euro NCAP but to me, its gotta have a larger crumple zone for it to be classified as safe. If it hits something, theres hardly enough body to absorb the impact meaning the occupants come to a stop quicker and thus more violantly....anyways thats my opinion.

Look at the cheap fuel you guys get!!

I actually quite like this, probably buy one when it's availible. Since I'm English and I don't weigh 925lbs, I won't be needing a new Silverado. images/smilies/wink.gif

Just don't travel out of the city or use it during a storm. A semi or a gust of wind will blow the thing over.

I'll just put some cement bricks in the boot. Oh wait, that will make it flip, damn. Maybe put a mcdonald's cheeseburger in the passenger seat instead, plenty of weight there.

The plus side is that because you're not driving a massive vehicle, people won't think you have a tiny penis.

Of course. On that basis, I would be much better off. Not to mention, it requires massive amounts of courage to drive a car that small, when the nation is full of off-roaders the size of small homes.
