Based on a modified CD3 platform – know as CD3-2 – the 2008 Mazda 6 will be sharing the platform with the new Ford Mondeo. Down the line, the CD3-2 is also expected to be the platform for various other future models – including the Jaguar X Type replacement and new Volvo S60. Even though the car is still heavily disguised, it’s clear that the new Mazda 6 will become some 30 mm longer overall and a bit wider, too. On top, we can see clues showing the new front fascia, including honeycomb inserts in the air intakes, large projector-type headlamp clusters.

The 2008 Mazda 6 will be powered by Ford’s new 250-horsepower 3.5-liter “Cyclone” engine. Other engine offerings may include a 2.5-liter inline-4 powerplant, and all-wheel-drive will be a popular option on all Mazda 6 versions.

A hybrid model will eventually become available, using the same 2.5-liter hybrid engine as the American 2008 Ford Fusion. All three body styles, a sedan, hatchback and wagon, will be offered, as well as a Mazdaspeed for the 2009 model year.

Production will take place in Flat Rock, Michigan (for North American models), as well as Japan. Asian production should start in late 2007, whereas North American production is expected to begin in June of 2008.

Ford europe and Mazda share the same platforms, and they have been for years. Some classic examples - Mazda 121, 323, 626: All shared platforms with ford.

Mazda3 - Euro focus
Mazda2 - Euro Fiesta

Although, the Euro Mondeo uses Ford EUCD, which is shared with Volvo, whereas this is going to be using a modified CD3 platform, the same platform under the current Mazda6.

Hopefully it's like Mazda's recent styling. MX-5, RX-8, CX-7 images/smilies/love.gif Not a giant fan of the Mazda2 and Mazda3, but Mazda3 MPS (That's it, right?) is the win.

Thank god they don't seem to be changing the looks radically. For me the Mazda is the best "normal" car out there, mostly because of two things:

1. It looks absolutely fantastic regardless the body. Estate, hatchback and sedan all look brilliant.

2. It is so much fun to drive. I had one of these last summer and I enjoyed every minute driving it. It puts such a huge smile on your face. The Mondeo is renowned to be a good car to drive, but compared to the Mazda 6 the Mondeo is a truck. My god I want that thing back again.

I was afraid they might ruin the looks of it and go in more artistic way with the design, like Nissan or BMW. Looking at these photos I am relieved and I can still continue shouting at people who buy something else and not this when looking for a normal car.

I have always liked Mazda's design philosophy. I think this will continue the trends started in the CX-7 and new Mazda 2/Demio (which I quite like as a small car).

Indeed, that is what your mom told me last night.

Edited to not just flame: I like the 6. I'd buy the MazdaSpeed6 if I had the money lying around as a daily/fun car.

This car is based on the new mondeo, but I think it looks 10 times better.
It will be reviled at the Frankfurt motorshow.

I don't like the interior, but I'm diggin' the looks. The 6 had a very sort-of dated look to it...this looks very modern, and kinda muscular in the same way the new Nissan G35 looks.

Nice. The interior is a bit of a step back from the old design, but the exterior is a welcomed improvement.

Looks great, except where things go wrong at the back, it's just too short and busy looking. A big improvement from the old model, though. Interior just isn't as nice as the old one, but it has a more Japanese character to it.

The old 6 had too much European influence in the interior for a Japanese car, the new one doesn't and is better for it.

Sort of looks like the new Lexus IS's. Even thought I don't have a penchant for them, I love the way they look. Good job, Mazda.
