Default Blood Diamond - your opinion

I was able to watch Blood Diamond the other day and I have to say that it was quite the film. It had a very interesting story and was not short on dramatic action sequences. Leonardo DiCaprio performed very well as Danny Archer and Djimon Hounsou was impressive as always.

If you have not seen the movie I suggest you do, you will leave satisfied.

And for those who have not seen the movie, a short plot summary:

Spoiler Text: (Click here to toggle display)
Set against the backdrop of civil war and chaos in 1990's Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) - a South African mercenary - and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) - a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories as different as any can be, until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives. While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon - who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields - has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory, a journey that could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.

So for those who have seen it, what are your opinions?

I liked it very much, I just wish it could have had a happier ending for Archer! Someone told me that the world's leading diamond producer had to spend more than 15 million dollars to counteract the negative effect this movie generated for their sales figures.

I really want to see this. Personally, I can't imagine buying a diamond. Not just because of conflict diamonds, but also because De Beers are bastards.

I watched it a few weeks ago, I thought it was a good movie. The story and action are pretty good.

When I saw Archer got shot, I knew he's going to die. But in a way that's not bad, it makes the movie more memorable.

The real crazy thing is that diamonds are really not all that rare.

I was watching the Jewelry network (don't ask, it was like 4am). Anyway, there were talking about all these other stones that were coming from Tanzania, Vietnam, and a bunch of other places....very rare and expensive. I really don't know anything about gemstones, just the colors. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I really have no point there, it was just interesting.

So I guess I'm one of the few who didn't actually like it that much then. It wasn't a bad movie, in fact it was good....not great. I kinda found it boring to be honest, the action sequences lacked flair and the woman was only there to push the political agenda of the movie.

DiCaprio was good, he's really coming along as an actor, especially following his impressive performance in The Departed, but I still can never forgive him for the cinematic shipwreck that was Titanic.

Spoiler!

I liked it pretty much. It was by far better than I expected... The acting was good, the action sequences are realistic AND there is very little of that awful hollywood formula of the main character being necesseraly attracted by a girl and getting to kiss/make love with her. It's ok in some movies but please, not with all of them!

Yeah, amazing how they have vaults of the stuff and release it in small doses to keep the price up.

one word... AMAZING.
That was truly an amazing movie, plus it really had an effect on me because last year my grade 10 planning class raised over $20 000 for people in Uganda effected by the LRA war. (not over diamonds but same basic concept with child soldiers and all) it's really horrible what happens over there, and to say this movie is based on fact is almost an understatment

This is easily one of my favourite movies the last few years. I've probably watched it 3-4 times the last couple of months.
