    British vs Americanmusic (present)

I was reading someone's posts on YouTube asking people where the great British artists/bands are, apparantly some bloke reckons that today America is leading the way with bands like Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, or Sunburned Hand Of The Man, whilst we only have Arctic Monkeys as a reply. I tried to respond back but then realised I gave up on modern music several years ago and most of my collection is 5+ years old.

So I just wanted to know what you think, when it comes to really talented artists/bands are we ahead of the yanks or are they ahead of us? Equally I suppose this thread could be titled "Which country is producing the best music today", which would you choose?

Well I'm in the same boat as you musically, my taste and collection is pretty old. I never liked all the brit versus american music arguments, because some one always brings up the dam spice girls......

Back to your question. I think the Artic monkeys are overated, two bands which are very talented are Muse and Dragon Force (if you like that sort of thing).

As for best country, I'd rather not comment as good music is good music but R&B sucks the fat one!!!

The Brits have a lot of good bands I've been listening to. Kasabian, Gomez, the Arctic Monkeys as well who are pretty good despite being hailed as the next big thing, and a few other ones that may expose the fact that I'm at least 3 years behind popular music.

What do we have in America, Trapt? Everybody here is still obsessed with Fall Out Boy... haha, it's all good, though I've never heard of those American bands listed.

The biggest newer bands in the world today are probably Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Greenday and Coldplay I think off the top of my head. What would an american say?

It's a tricky one coz it depends how 'deep' you are willing to explore the musical scene in a particular country. In terms of 'big' bands America willprobably always have a leg up because of all the bucks involved, but that rarely equates to musical originality.

The original discussion came about on an Amon Tobin music video, with one person commenting that artistically and visually America is so far behind Europe (And several posters agreeing). One of the posters slated the Monkeys as one of the 'shite' bands currently in british music today.

Me neither. Maybe it's because I don't listen to pop music, only proper music

I dont listen to mainstream music, pretty much only "underground" bands that no one has heard of. 8)

Though I do like Kasabian, and also Lost Prophets (from Australia, IIRC)

I don't listen to pop and don't know any of those bands mentioned in the first post. 70s and 80s rock of various forms is my main aural stimuli.

They're from Wales. I liked them for the first CD, one of my favorites. The 2nd one was ok, but much more mainstream, and I won't even touch the 3rd one. I guess I'm sounding like one of those pessimistic indie wannabes that liked Coldplay before they ever got big.

90% of all "modern" music is the syphilitic drippings of small minded record executives. I stopped paying attention to "modern" music in the late 1990's. The RIAA whines and moans about how record sales are falling while downloading is on the rise, but what they are not telling you is that most the artists being downloaded are not RIAA recording artists, they are small independent bands. I have not heard much from RIAA artists that is noteworthy and most of it is barely tolerable. Because labels won't sign real artists, opting to manufacture the pop-icon-du-jour, the music loving public has sought good music elsewhere. Since no one will sign decent artists that means going with small labels or downloading. If the RIAA wants to increase record sales then they should give us something worth buying.
    </rant>

Oh, and if I hear one more rap or hip-hop track rattling the license plate on a POS Hooptie while a Jr High dropout sings about his "bitches and hoes" and how violence is bad except for that one time he "bust a cap" in someone's ass because of something that guy did to one of his "hoes" I'm seriously gonna loose it.

Yep, both Jet Wolfmother are Australian. There, I'm done being pedantic. I used to like Green Day, but American Idiot would have been good if it wasn't being jammed down our ear canals everywhere we looked, and if they hadn't put on makeup like a bunch of pussy emo shitheads. But hey, the RIAA gave us Paris Hilton, didn't they?!

Lastly, I don't care what anybody on my dorm floor says, Radiohead is overrated.

RHCP is a newer band? They were formed over 20+ years ago.

British have better bands right now, and honestly Green Day is not the best band, technically or musicially I don't know why people like them, but America has RHCP which makes up for Greenday. It's just the scene in America is a lot harder to break out in.

Yeah, when I first started playing guitar back in the 90's (when Green Day was cooler), I could play most of their music then in almost no time. Learn your power chords and you can go far

Us Aussies do have a great selection of bands: Wolfmother, Wolf & Cub, Eskimo Joe, Dallas Crane, Jet, Architecture in Helsinki to name a few.

We have the advantage of having what I would have to say is the best radio station on the planet; Triple J: http://triplej.net.au/.
It is government owned, so does not rely on sponsors. It fosters budding Australian and foreign artists, basically launched bands like Wolfmother, and leads the way with new music.

Have a listen to them online : http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/listen/default.htm
