Default Command and Conqer 3 - XBOX 360 DEMO

well demo for the 360 is here, i've played it and well its a mixed bag.

the GUI is way different and is situated in the lower left corner instead of the upper right.

the controls however are pretty responsive, they will take alot of getting used to tho IMO.

managingin build cues is pretty damn awkward, especially when you have a base and a couple of those support cranes to give you extra build que's. it doesnt provide you with a tab for each que, it just puts a 2nd set of indentical icons in the same tab...which works for the defence structures...but doesnt for the normal structures. instead you have to physically select the crane/base and then chose your building.

to get into the cues in the first place you either click on a building and hold the right trigger in then press A on the structure you want and then when its built you press A to place it. however if you arent near the building you can press and hold the right trigger, then use the D-Pad's up n down to move down a list of tabs, then press A on the desired tab then use D-Pad left n right to pick your item

you cant drag out a box to select units either. you have to hold down A and move the cursor over your units, if you pull and hold the left trigger and press A it selects all on screen units. also setting unit stances is a PITA....on the PC the little stance bar is there instantly for you, on this you have to pick the units, then hold right trigger, highlight the shield icon, press A then highlight desired stance and press A....way to much time.

dont get me wrong the controls are pretty solid, but they just feel clunky and awkward.

another rubbish decision is the special powers/attacks bar (ie like calling in air drops, artillery attacks etc etc) in the PC game they are arranged nicely down the left hand side, ready for you to use in no more than 2 clicks.

in the 360 version, they arent listed on the left hand side, so in the middle of a fight you actually forget all about them, they might as wel not exist. when you do go "ah yeah i have radar scan and a tiberium bomb" you must hold right trigger, use the dpad up/down to highlight the powers icon, press A, use dpad to select desired attack and then press A select it, then A again to use it once you have aimed.

just too many button presses to get to stuff that really should be at your finger tips.

graphics....its got all the pizazz of the PC version, though i dare say it looks no where near as sharp as the PC version, even when the PC version is at a lower res (playing with a VGA cable to a dell 2005FPW using 1:1 ratio) but i guess thats just me being spoilt with dvi input for the last 3 years. when you zoom right in though some nice detail does make itself apparent.

it runs pretty smooth too, rotating, zooming, panning is all super quick and it doesnt seem to get too bogged down when theres alot going on at once.

so it seems ok, it'll probably take quite some time to get used to controls....especially unit selection and build queue management. i dont see why they had to change the GUI though...this new one looks much worse than the PC's GUI, and it seems to me to be no better functionality wise.

ill give it some more time, but so far id say stick with the PC version if you can
