What are you talking about? They all work fine on XP, at least TFD editions. I was playing the original C&C the other day just fine on XP as well as RA1. images/smilies/wink.gif

Well come play again with us! It's fun playing old games, especially together online. images/smilies/smile.gif
Thanks for the offer, I'll try after I graduate from high school (in two weeks! images/smilies/mrgreen.gif )

And man, RA1 was fun. That MAD truck! images/smilies/twisted.gif

Hmm...sorry I must be wrong. I haven't actually tried TFD, but have only read a review which complained that they didn't play properly under XP.

I know what I am going to buy! images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Ye, I've got C&C, C&C Red Alert 1 with expansions & 2, C&C Tiberian Sun and C&C Generals & Zero Hour. Been playing C&C games since '98.

Even though the basic idea of the game has remained exactly the same from day 1, they are still great fun.

New info out

The July C&C3 podcast has hit the streets, featuring Apoc, executive producer Mike Verdu, and legendary LARPer (and lead designer) Jason Bender. There's some nice little "colour" talk about the team members bashing each other in GDI-v-GDI-v-GDI multiplayer, Mike Verdu has a good overview on Tiberium in C&C3's world, there's talk of Silos, Tiberium Storms (which we read about in the designer diary a couple of days ago). Notable mentions are:

* Silos are IN, and you can steal enemy money out of them.
* 80% of the world's population lives in Yellow Zones
* Zone Troopers (possibly among other infantry units) aren't vulnerable to Tiberium fields, but others are.
* Red Zones have a lot of Tiberium, so expect higher-money battles with faster powering-up.
* Even totally farmed-out fields of Tiberium will eventually grow back, but you can't just expect to nurse your "starter" field through a whole match. Tiberium harvesting is faster in the begining of the match when there's a lot of it on the map.
* Nod plays the "good guys" (sorta) in the Yellow Zones, where they bring food etc. to the neglected poor folk who live there. Champions of the oppressed and all that, yadda yadda.
* EA is trying to make C&C3 a "fast-paced" game
* Multiple refineries and harvesters are absolutely back in, and GDI has "familiar tactics still available".
* Fan feedback (that's YOU) about the initial Tiberium shots showing "big crystals" has been heard and Mike Verdu said they made the (harvestable) crystals smaller.
* Mike Verdu says he "comes across as GDI", but he's "subversive at heart". Jason Bender says, "Peace Through Power - Nod has style".
* At Leipzig, EA will be showcasing the first real-time multiplayer GDI versus Nod match, and there will be a "big announcement" that Mike Verdu thinks "will mean a *lot* to Command & Conquer fans"
* One of the factions will have an "interesting, unique" and "tactical" use of Tiberium - that you'll want to be "very close to Tiberium when you're using their units"

Heres what I think of the lot...

Tiberiam Dawn(old C&C) - The best of the entire series, I think its the most balanced. Some of those Covert Operations were ridiculously hard. I think there was only 1 easy one.
Red Alert - Fun despite the imbalance (Soviets rule land, Allies rule sea), I think this game had the best music of them all.
Tiberian Sun - Not as fun, too heavily favouring NOD.
Red Alert 2 - I feel is 2nd to the first C&C and first to introduce a 3rd faction, Yuri did being some imbalance but not as noticible as RA1.
Generals - Liked the way they developed the game but it lacked the C&C feel because of the departure of the old engine and the music seems non existant, this title didn't really need the C&C name.

I do wonder if C&C3 will retain one of the most noticible features of all C&C games...the really stupid AI.

Oh yeah, forgot to say that about a month ago I finally successfully finished every C&C game on every side.

Took me a good month of playing, although I could get through most games in one night per side, but it took me a while as I did so at the same time as my university exams. Probably not the best timing....but I still passed everything. images/smilies/tongue.gif

I play a lotta Generals, but I find it hard to play older stuff. I hate the small queue and only one building.

I know what you mean, but it is funny to watch the evolution of the RTS over the years. But it is really annoying when you go to set a rally point or box select units only to remember "oh yeah, they hadn't invented that yet". images/smilies/lol.gif

A couple of years ago I play Dune 2 for the first time in many a year. They hadn't even invented multiple unit selection, so you have the select each individually, scroll up to where you want them to go, click to send it there, scroll back down, select the next unit and repeat. Usually by the time you have orded 5 or 6 units to the front the battle is over. images/smilies/lol.gif
