Default First look: Original stars rev up 'Fast and Furious'

Fast and Furious is restarting its engines and putting something extra under the hood.

The fourth installment of the street-racing saga will enjoy a rarity among franchises: the return of original stars. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker reprise their roles as outlaw and cop.

The movie is a sign of the strength of "quiet giants," franchises that "might not be James Bond or Indiana Jones but still have a rabid following, especially overseas or on DVD," says Paul Dergarabedian of Media by Numbers.

Even Justin Lin, who directed 2006's Tokyo Drift, has been surprised by the franchise's reach.

"I was in Barcelona, and a kid from Spain comes up and just says 'Fast and Furious,' " Lin says. "It's amazing how many kids know it."

Indeed, the series has made $600 million worldwide and is one of Universal Studios' best-selling DVD titles.

"We were doing a movie about illegal racing before most people even knew how popular it was," Diesel says. "How many franchises are that based on the real world?"

But it's not all current events, Walker says. "Who doesn't like fast cars and hot women?"

Great, now they're starting to piss on GNXs. Better get yours from eBay Motors before they skyrocket in value!

Skyrocket in value? Oh wait, never mind. This frivolous muscle car explosion has GOT to stop. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

So they were stealing electronics in the first movie, and now they're back to steal petrol tankers?

Well, after the urgent rise of petrol prices, it's not a bad idea to steal petrol tankers after all. The movie just adapts to current times images/smilies/lol.gif

Anyways I'll wait for the trailer to be released befor I give my opinion about the movie.

Why the fuck did they have to smash up the GNX?

I am SICK AND TIRED of Hollywood always smashing up nice cars for NO REASON. If a nice car comes on the screen, you know right away that 20 minutes later they are going to crash it, roll it, or blow it up. I think that these producers are sick and they must get some kind of a sick thrill from smashing up all these nice cars the rest of us could only dream of owning.

Example: Just saw Get Smart (good movie though), but in one scene they rear-end a LAMBORGHINI MIURA!!! Why?? The fact that it was a Miura was neither here nor there for the movie, the joke was a two second throw-away type and it could have been handled by ANY car. Why on earth they used a Miura... nobody I was with even recognized the car except me. images/smilies/no.gif

It's not a GN or GNX if you know your Buick's. First, it's lacking the hood buldge both cars had. Second, it looks like it's sporting the wire rims from the GNX. Third, it has ventiports above a "Gran National" badge. The wire rims were exclusive to the GNX, they never showed up on the GN. Only the GNX had ventiports, it was stripped of almost all badges and markings except for a "gnX" on the grill and hood. The GNX was never stuck with that horrible left over from 1974 go fast logo "Gran National" badge on the fender.

So basically they've created a frankenstein, half assed, shitty, GN/GNX hybrid.

And I'm sure it will be taking a back seat to some civic with 8 million NAAWWWWWWS stickers.

This is a proper GNX.

I use to really have a soft spot for those buicks. Done right they look really muscluar and menacing (if you like the boxy look). Too bad they now seem ruined by gangster culture (as with many other things).

Actually i heartell the new "hero car" will be the new STI with a HIDEOUS hood scoop.

I enjoy the fast and the furious movies in the same way some enjoy old dr who episodes or 50's sci-fi, its just so goofy and over the top bad that it flips over into bizzaro world and becomes quality popcorn, at least the first one was.

The second one was unforgivable, not even worth watching as a joke.

I own the third one on DVD... but lets keep quiet about that images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm looking forward to this movie. I liked the first one, can't say the same about the second and third, though. It's great to see Vin back in action.

Edit: Here's another picture I found:

http://pic.phyrefile.com/a/an/anonymous/2008/06/27/clip_image001_000.jpg

It looks like the "hero" car will still be the same Skyline as in the second movie.

If you think the budget for Hollywood films doesn't include a couple of car mockups or fakes, you're nuts.
