Default FPS shooters: How do you sniper?!?

Hope someone can help me, i just reinstalled CS (not the biggest fan, but it has it moments) and realized that although i can kill a hundred bagillion people when i have a automatic weapon, i can't hit anything for shit when i have to sniper in any way. I suppose its always been this way, i can follow objects and control gun spray, but when i have to do one shot one kill i'm the dead one. Anyways, does anybody have any tips? I finaly have a good connection and good in game settings (on my dads computer, mine is still dead) so atleast now if i play a game like CS when i shoot something it actually registers. Any tips would be apprieciated.

I mean is it really about being the fastest draw, or is it more about proper scanning, dodging, and anticipation? Whatever it is I don't have it.

Think about it the same way as in real life, covered back, secure area, and only shoot if you're sure that no one has spotted you and you're absoloutely 100% sure you have a clear shot.

Some possible vantage points could be

- Guard Towers
- Peaks
- Roofs and

Generally anything that's high up and easy to guard.

And one last thing, remember to set booby traps around your assasin's perch so you know how and when to get out of there if something goes wrong.

(I've been watching way too much Burn Notice)

I think you have to surprise the enemy. If you stay in one place, you will get shot, no way around it.

In css you are able to walk side to side pretty fast, so if you do that, it helps a ton. coming out of a corner and quickly aiming at the enemy is best though. but you really do have to be quick.

Tips for CS:

-Use the Scout instead of the awp.
-AIM FOR THE HEAD.
-Put tape on your monitor to tell you where to aim if you're unable to figure it out.

Explanations for each:

*Use the scout...*:
The awp is heavy, so walking side to side while firing is damn near impossible and you'll look like a complete moron if you try to. Use the scout so you can run around and avoid taking damage while still headshotting all your opponents. Once you feel much more used to sniping, then move on to the awp if you like. Remember that there's a somewhat new strategy for the awp in that you have to hide and make sure you're covered on all ends rather than just running around like a monkey shooting at everything that moves.

*AIM FOR THE HEAD...*
Supposed to be self-explanatory here, but there's a key issue. If you use the awp you can aim pretty much anywhere and still 1-shot the enemy. However with the scout it takes 2 hits on the torso to kill your enemy (does about 60-70 damage per hit on anything but the head). Try to aim for the head as best as possible and strafe around dodging at the same time. You'll get used to it.

*Put tape on your monitor...*
Yeeess this is the age old cheat where you can put tape on your monitor and use a sharpie to mark the crosshairs for the scout/awp. This way you don't even have to use the sight and can just run around 1-shotting people without bothering about finding a good hiding spot etc etc. But please... don't overdo it.... just do it when you're a noob and are still practicing and getting used to it. Once you feel better about it, take the tape off images/smilies/tongue.gif

I personally dislike the awp. The only time i like it is in gun game. Otherwise I prefer the MP5, the P90, and the Aug/Krieg (for CT/T).

I love somethingawful's description of the awp. the gun so powerful (at one time) that all you had to do was point it in the general direction of the continent your target was standing on, and he'd die of a heart attack

So far as CS goes, i have a damn hard time strafing with a scout rifle because the server i've been on ,"AcceleratedCS" or something, everybody will kill you within no time at all, its all just peaking around corners and trying to shoot threw walls. I've noticed i can usually shoot people first in a 1v1 fight, especially with a machine gun, but i have a bad habbit of exposing myself (how can you not?!?) to like 5 other people at the same time, and i don't think i've ever seen somebody go 1v5 in a clear and open area and come out on top, i suppose i'm just not used to the whole "twitch" reaction thing CS seems to be all about. The game is also more serious then i remember, which makes me loose focus on why it should be fun, and when that happens i just have pure aggression fueling me, which leads to terrible scores.

So far as headshots, that would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that i suck at precision aiming (maybe i should try a slower mouse setting?) and that the way peoples heads warp back and forth when they strafe in CS kind of trips me out, actually it makes me kind of jumpy and unsettled, which is probably why i can't get better at it.

One thing i have learned though is to smoothly rounding corners so my aim is in proper anticipation, seems to give me stellar results in 1v1 battles, but i still have a tendency to kill one guy then walk in front of 3 people with awps.

Sounds like Battlefield? Actually the whole reason i'm trying to get good at CS is that i kinda made a pact that i wouldn't play battlefield again until i could figure out what i was so horrible at in CS. I could play battlefield and get rediculously good stats and have a hell of a time doing it, furthermore i was almost ALWAYS infantry, so although i was in the Top 250 players from time to time (remember BFstats.com?) it wasn't because i knew how to bomb helpless infantry at the enemy base. No what i did was gritty and hairy-chested awesomeness, but somehow my skills all were lost in translation when i finally tried CS (a lot of which i found out later had to do with horrible connection settingsl), and i've kind of felt like a fool ever since. Maybe i shouldn't give a damn about CS, but its kind of like something i need to prove to myself before i can move on in life, i know it sounds stupid, but its true.

Changing mouse settings I've heard does help with the awp. There have been very few instances where even I've done a 1v5 and come out on top. It especially happens when everyone has been playing for a while and are all lethargic and lazy and I'm rabid and frothing at the mouth. Only happens with autos, far fewer times with sniper rifles. I'm not talking all 5 on me either, but within the general area.

Just keep strafing as you fight, run around and never stay in the same spot for more than 10 seconds. Change it up and surprise the person. Catch them with their backs turned and shank em good.

Practice makes perfect man. Just keep at it.

If you playing all snipers this kinda doesn't have any merit...(unless people have not figured it out yet).
But find a spot that nobody uses...even if its a little in the open it is better to catch someone by surprise rather than being somewhere where everybody looks whenever they round the corner.

For example, in office (CSS) there is a chair with filing cabinets around it...what I do is shoot a cabinet over and sit behind the chair with my entire back exposed to other ppl coming around the corner, but I do this because I can often surprise people coming my way and after a certain amount of time change positions.

Another position I use is right out in the open of the halls...but right along the wall where you can see the washrooms and what leads to the long hallway. That way I can get people rounding corners by surprise and by getting the people going through washrooms at the same time, yet I am completely exposed but usually where I am is not usually the first place people look.

There are different strategies in sniping depending on the game.
In CS you can't call sniping really sniping.
I played CS for a long time. And the AWP is an awesome gun wich needs a lot of practice.
In the beginning you'll probabbly be sitting around in a corner waiting for the enemy to cross your double zoomed crosshair. At the end you'll be running and hopping around with your AWP like you would with a Colt. And just shoot enemy's down unzoomed.

So the only tip I can give you is: Practise!
Maybe it can help to watch some CS movies to.

In most shooting games, I can just run around with a USP (Or something like it) and a sniper rifle and be happy, It gives you that persona of being a hired assasin and it is just so much cooler than being a machine gun totting idiot with no accuracy that just sprays gunfire,

My way of dealing with large groups of enemies are grenades, flash bangs a modern large clip pistol and lots of cover, or better yet I only use flash bangs and only kill the ones that are blocking my way to the exit.

Call it scouting or just plain shooting. As I said, with the scout you're running around and shooting as you would with any automatic rifle or pistol but you still have to aim and whatnot since it is a sniper. Awp is different in that you have to play it more like a sniper than a regular gun. However I've seen people running around strafing every which way and going batshit crazy even with an awp. We just need a new phrase for that then.

"Berserking" perhaps? images/smilies/tongue.gif

Don´t think too much. Get to know how the weapon fires and how you get a steady shot. Then relax. When you spot an enemy it´s usefull in close or mid range to get a bit of adrenaline going on ... when you move to the long distance, that´s not useful. Be calm or all you´ll hit is air.

In FPS with the Role "Sniper", you always gotta remeber that you are not a regular Soldier, oyou don´t rush in, you don´t complete objectives ... you stay in the back and shoot enemys at long distance. Don´t go near the frontline. It´s very important for teamwork that you really play your role.

CS isn't really that great of a game for sniping. I prefer to use a more multi-purpose gun like the Aug or the Krieg 552.
