UPDATE:

Apparently we are "the vocal minority" when it comes to adware attached to our games according to one EA executive:

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/new...hp?story=11300

So according to this guy there's no adware in BF 2142. I found a family photo of his brother:
http://nunya-biz.com/Pics/EA-Info.jpg

So now that you have read that I refer you to this link for a definition of adware. Sounds like exactly the same thing to me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adware

Oh and anyone who believes the bullshit about EA needing advertising money raise your hand.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/1996/bsmeterup4.jpg

EDIT

Sorry for all the images, but I just found this one. It's a mock-up of what the BF2142 release will look like

I played for 3 hours tonight and didn't see one ad. Also ran multiple spyware programs, nothing was found. No new programs accessing the Internet or processes running.

What is Spyware/Adware?
Quote:
<software> (Or "adware") Any type of software that transmits
information without the user's knowledge.

Information is sent via the Internet to a server somewhere,
normally as a hidden side effect of using a program.

Gathering this information may benefit the user indirectly,
e.g. by helping to improve the software he is using. It may
be collected for advertising purposes or, worst of all, to
steal security information such as passwords to online
accounts or credit card details.

Spyware may be installed along with other software or as the
result of a virus infection. There are many tools available
to locate and remove various forms of spyware from a computer.

Some HTTP cookies could be considered as spyware as their
use is generally not made explicit to users. It is however
possible to disallow them, either totally or individually, and
some are actually useful, e.g. recording the fact that a user
has logged in.
Quote:
Main Entry: spyware
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: any software that covertly gathers information about a user while he/she navigates the Internet and transmits the information to an individual or company that uses it for marketing or other purposes
Quote:
Spyware, adware, and tracking:

The term adware frequently refers to any software which displays advertisements, whether or not it does so with the user's consent.

Other spyware behaviours, such as reporting on websites the user visits, frequently accompany the displaying of advertisements. Monitoring web activity aims at building up a marketing profile on users in order to sell "targeted" advertisement impressions. The prevalence of spyware has cast suspicion upon other programs that track Web browsing, even for statistical or research purposes. Some observers describe the Alexa Toolbar, an Internet Explorer plug-in published by Amazon.com, as spyware (and some anti-spyware programs report it as such) although many users choose to install it.
What EA said BF2142 does
Quote:
The advertising program in Battlefield 2142 does not access any files which are not directly related to the game. It does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, or surfing history.

BF 2142 delivers ads by region. The advertising system uses a player's IP address to determine the region of the player, assisting to serve the appropriate ads by region and language. For instance, a player in Paris might be presented with ads in French. The information collected will not be repurposed for other uses.

Battlefield 2142 also tracks "impression data" related to in-game advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to help advertisers qualify the reach of a given advertisement.
So the game sends information about you to a server including your location, what you are looking at in the game and how long you look at it. Right then, I can totally see the difference there. They just defined adware in their statement about what the program does and then said that it wasn't adware. images/smilies/think.gif

Someone will have to clear that up for me. Hiding behind an ELUA does not make it ok. I hate the idea of someone looking over my shoulder. It's no one's business what I watch on TV, what movies I rent, what games I play or what I look at in those games. Companies have enough information on me already. Although the game may not send that information, what do you think you are doing when you register your software? Associating a name, address and Email with your key-hash. That can then be associated with your IP and all the data the game collects. The EULA leaves a huge hole for EA and the advertisers to sneak through. They are waving one hand and shouting "Look at what this hand isn't doing" while the other is free to snoop all it wants. Don't be naive.

Hopefully, it's just ads in the menu screens.

Yeah, it makes sense that there are no ads in the demo otherwise people would get ticked already and not buy the full version.....although it seems some are already ticked....

Are the only places that ads will show up be billboards in the game? Not on other surfaces or places?

I must admit it really annoys me in Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory.
Every single computer screen has AMD slapped across it and theres random packets of Airwaves lying around in overly obvious places. Theres even a massive blimp with Airwaves on it on one of the cut scenes.

No.

This is for your own good.

Sorry, I have no idea what's wrong, but you say an EA product is crashing and buggy? I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

You would have been better off buying the disks. I bought a $10 expansion on the EA downloader and could never get it installed. Always better to stick with disks anyways.

Did all that. I'm thinking it may be my video card (Which isn't supported)...it's an intel something. But I was on the BF forums, and somebody is having the same issue and they have a supported card.

I dunno, i'll call tech support tomorrow and ask if there are any issues with the download (before I spend upwards of 50 dollars for another video card)

Most Intel video stuff is just integrated video (such as IntelĀ® Extreme Graphics: It's just built into your motherboard. I don't know if Intel even makes a real video card) and sorry, but Intel integrated graphics won't even come close to running BF2 or Bf2142.

You should have atleast played the demo and made sure it performed to your liking before you bought it images/smilies/bangin.gif

The demo runs on my integrated card although the ATI integrated is supposed to be better than the Intel Extreme.

I'll probably pick up a video card, I saw some that are supported for 40-60 bucks. Some for 99 (all ATI). Just so I can get better performance

But I'm not even positive that's the issue

Please, do yourself a favor and get an Nvidia card. I had an ATI and I am much happier with the Nvidia, the drivers are so much nicer.
