Les Stroud knows what he's doing Bayer Grills (or whatever his name is) is a fucking idiot. He stays in hotels and only goes out to film, he takes a whole camera crew (Les hauls all his own cameras and does all his own filming).

I watched the Man vs. Wild that was down in south-eastern Utah outside of Moab. That's my stomping ground and I know the area very well. I know how to survive in the desert and trust me when I tell you that if you follow Bayer's advice you will die.

Watch the Surviorman for the redrock desert and you will see what I'm talking about. Les is the man when it comes to survival shows.

I have to disagree.

Les Stroud obviously knows what he's talking about, no question there. But when I sit down to watch what is essentially a nature show, Man vs. Wild is just better. Better shots of the environment better locations, better editing, and Bear is a more interesting host. It may not be as educational as Survivorman but if I wanted education I'd read a book or watch public television.

That said, I think this whole hotel talk is a bunch of BS. Do you know how hard it is to get a permit into a National Park or Forest for a week with no planned route, knowing full well your party will not be using trails, oh and were going to fly a helicopter in every day to pick up the camera crew?

^ Yeah I was going to post that. Thanks for saving me the trouble.

The reason Survivorman has different shooting is because all those cameras and the hosting and the survival is all being done by one guy. He doesn't have a crew or support staff to help him out. Remember that every shot of Les walking over ground is just 1/3 of the process, he has to traverse the land, set up the camera, go back and then film himself going back over the terrain as if it's for the first time.

Grils is a moron and a fraud. His "advice" is going to get someone killed.

Still, I've done my share of backpacking trips and anyone who ventures out into the wilderness like Bear or Les is an experienced survivalist. I think a lot of people take these shows too seriously. After all in the real back-country no TV show will teach you how to survive. It's all in the hours of preparation before hand and good decision making on the trail.

I must say, Bear didn't do himself any favours by claiming to be dropped off in the middle of nowhere and reaching safety all by himself like in the early episodes. It would have been fine if he actually did, but he was spotted in grill bars and stuff which lead to some rather predictable puns in the mediaimages/smilies/biggrin.gif What I can say though, is that in the later episodes of Man versus wild ("Born survivor" over here) he did mention the fact that he got help from various sources far more often which is what he should have done in the first place and not acted like he was doing everything himself. Also I dunno if they have changed the dramatic beginning sequences where it shows him sky diving from a chopper and him claiming that he is going to make a go of it all by himself, I should hope they have removed that bit as well. He is a nice and entertaining guy though, but the first couple series of his show mislead the viewer alot.

How about Ray Mears, he seems like more a kind of "do it yourself" kinda guy.

I liked Man vs. Wild because it was more entertaining, but then stuff happened in the show that just seemed more and more unlikely. Then it turns out to be all fake, now it's Survivorman all the way.

I know. I was expressing that the photo was humorous and then that Les Stroud and Survivorman is much better than Man vs. Wild and Bear Grylls.

I still say Man vs. Wild is a better show, it's entertainment. You guys think all the little stunts on Top Gear aren't scripted. You think they made it to the North Pole or across Africa without massive support.

Les is an impressive survivalist, but his show is dry. Not his fault he's a one man production crew. The problem is, the only audience that will sit through the show are people that enjoy spending a week in the wilderness, we are few and far between. Frankly, I'd rather go enjoy the outdoors rather then watch it on a TV.
