Default Survival Shows

Let's talk survival shows, Man vs Wild, Survivorman, I shouldn't be alive, whatevers.

I heart Survivorman and Man vs Wild, a lot. Some buddies and I are planning various backpacking trips for spring and summer so we can try some of that shit out, haha. Camping and hiking are very popular in my state, so this should add an element of uniqueness to future camps.

discuss.

I don't watch any of that. The Office is pretty funny, however.

They're great shows. Basically they show how to get out of sticky situations in the wilderness. One is presented by a Canadian everyman, the other an ex-british special forces adventurer, great stuff.

Zenki, you know how I feel about the shows but for everyone else. My preference:

1.) Survivorman
2.) Man v. Wild

Becuase of these shows, and what had happend to James Kim, I put together a little survival kit and put it in my car right next to the jack. I have to get a Flint stick though, for it, just cuase I havent masters the bow and drill method.

Either way, they are great shows and frankly are much, MUCH better than some of the other crap Discovery has been airing these days.

i was actually going to make a poll today on which one people like better. Generally, i like Man vs. Wild because the guy, who's named Bear, is a better presenter. But a lot of the stuff he does, a normal person would not be able to do. On survivorman, the guy, who's named Les, does more realistic things.

As far as the show goes, Bear has a camera crew following him around which makes me wonder just how much trouble he is in what sort of men the camera guys are. But he has mentioned in the past that the camera crew has their own tent and supplies etc.
Les on Survivorman looks to be in more danger because he is out in the wilderness alone and he is his own camera man.

Nonetheless, i like Man Vs. Wild more. I like the way the guy can eat snakes, zebra, and tree bark just like normal people eat sandwiches.

Some buddies and I are planning on making a trip to the local spyderco outlet before spring to get good "whacking knives", and I too need a flint, heheh. Live trout, pine tea and fresh rabbit are all in store this spring, heheh.

Flint? Why not get a weatherproof lighter from your outfitter? That's what I put in my 72 hour kit, along with food, water, shelter, water purification, no-battery flashlight, lightsticks, multi-tool, and assorted bits and bobs that would be useful in an emergency.

EDIT: Since I moved into an urban environment I added a tactical shotgun and extra ammo to the list. Having an emergency kit is useless if you can't keep someone from taking it away from you.

Guys, if you want to learn real suvival skills you DON'T get them off the tv. I think that is what people don't get. These shows are primarily for entertainment and people need to understand that. Man vs Wild is more entertaining. Survivor Man is alright but I can't stand all of that melodramatic narration from Les. **** gets on my nerves.

Jetsetter, I agree with you about the shows being for entertainment. Essentially if you have the creativity to make it then you will, if you don't know what you are doing then you are buzzard fodder.

I think I'll learn enough "real" survival skills during basic to add to what I learned during hunter's safety, outdoor education and camping with the family that I can watch these shows and take a few ideas from them safely.

the shows are very entertaining and do give some good tips, but no, they won't prepare you completely for barebones wilderness survival. I think one of the purposes of these shows is to sort of whet the appetite of regular campers and hikers and get them interested in real survival, so that less people die when stranded. or maybe they just want money.

For Man VS. Wild, i think the European Alps one is my favorite episode. I like how he jumps into a frozen lake, and then strips naked and does some pushups to warm himself up. Its not whether it works or not, but the fact that he is completely naked in a vast expanse of snow that makes me question his sanity. Its awesome
