Hadn't heard that version, you are right, it is excellent, Malmsteen on guitar makes it even better!

John Mellencamp was finally inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of fame, well deserved imo!

At least once in your life, you gotta try this:

Get the Black Sabbath album Heaven And Hell, be in a room alone with the door shut, grab a sharpie marker or something that is about the size of a microphone, put headphones on, turn the volume WAAAAY up and pretend you are Ronnie James Dio, poses and all.

Only by doing that will you completely understand the genius that is, Ronnie James Dio.

Went to a concert of Explosions in the Sky, Eluvium and Dirty Projectors in Brussels last night. I liked it a lot, those guys from EITS hammering away on their guitars was fantastic. Eluvium was a nice surprise: some bloke with an electric guitar, a macbooc and some fingerpieces who made great soundspaces all by himself. I don't know how exactly he did it, I think he recorded a "sample" on the fly and set it in a loop, while gradually building the soundscape and ending in an intense climax after which he "clicked away" the music. Very intriguing.

I also really liked the fact that they were "pure" musicians. The guy from eluvium only said a shy "thank you" afterwards, and the guy from EITS was clearly uneasy and only said a few sentences. However, when the music started their guitar was the only thing in the world. No egotripping there.
However I felt sorry for the guys of Dirty Projectors. I don't know why they are in the same concert (I suppose because they are friends of EITS) but their music style is quite different and they had a hard time motivating the crowd.

I very rarely like classical music, and on the terribly rare occasions that I do find someone I like, they aren't people from Beethoven or Bach eras. I prefer modern classical music. And I have just found a brilliant composer by the name of Ludovico Einaudi. He is pretty damn good.

Here is his song 'Divenire'. I love this song.

Been listening to a lot of Paramore lately, had to get over female vocals in my Alternative though, but it works.

I could go deaf to her voice. Mind you that's with a lot of female vocals though.

So Coldplay's new album is set for release on the 17th of June. Is supposed to have a South American feel to it. I'm sure it will be more of the good stuff like always from them. Hell it's produced by Brian Eno can't be all that bad.

Old Grey Whistle Test

The programme went out on BBC2, last thing on a Friday night, from a tiny studio on the fourth floor of Television centre. In the days before 24 hour television the station would close down at the end of the evening. This gave the last programme of the day some flexibility.

If things were going well for the Old Grey Whistle Test they could stay on air. Some shows ended after 25 minutes while particularly good ones sometimes extended to an hour and a half.

They had a budget of £500 per show, which was very low even in those days. In addition to the technical costs the artists themselves had to be paid. David Bowie, for example, played three songs and was paid £50.

John Lennon refused to accept his fee in cash, insisting that he should be rewarded instead with chocolate Bath Oliver biscuits!

The Starkicker The titles sequence featured an animation of a man kicking a star. He was to become affectionately known as The Starkicker.

The show's title music, with it's distinctive harmonica, was a track called Stone Fox Chase by a Nashville band, Area code 615.

When bands were performing the sound was often so loud that the camera crew could not hear what the director was saying in their headphones.

The programme makers continually broke new ground. The first ever 'simulcast' of radio and television , the first live transatlantic broadcast of a rock concert and the television coverage of Live Aid were all achieved by the Whistle Test team.

Sadly, the programme is no more, having ended it's run in 1987, but it passed the musical baton to it's successors.

A succession of programmes such as 'Later with Jools Holland', 'The Tube' and 'The White Room' have all drawn inspiration from Whispering Bob Harris's Old Grey Whistle Test.
