I was reading some article about death of one of the members of group called Coil. I never heard about them, so I listened to some previews, and all I really really liked it! Looks like they have been making music for some 20 years, and the music... I don't know how to describe it. Very experimental, some random sounds merging in to melodies, techno, punk, industrial, even some "jazzy" ones. I'm not a music critic, so I don't know all the right words I have only heard couple of tracks from different albums (snow, panic, disco hospital, original chaostrophy, hearworms, amethyst decievers), and I pretty much liked them all. Trying to get my hands on some albums now to get a better picture

I've been listening to a lot of japanese rock lately, and i came across an artist named Shiina Ringo. A lot of people compare her to Alanis Morristte (sp), but I don't think that's necessarily true, especially for her recent albums. her latest accomplishment is forming a band, named Tokyo Jihen. The members are basically herself along with others that have been working with her for a while. a friend of mine has provided me with a clip from one of her concerts. this is actually all the tokyo jihen members, before they formally announced the forming of the band.

there are 3 songs in the clip, but unfortunately, second song gets cut off.
and don't ask me about the file name, it's my friend's work

*edit: btw, this is a video clip, not a sound clip. it's from one of her concerts.

Anyway, these guys play (or used to play) metal music by 4 cellos. At first they just played Metallica's and some other metal bands' music, but after a while they started to write their own stuff. And I loved last two albums.

Now there are 3 cellos left, and style has changed a little... In first track guitars and drums dominate and I hardly can hear cellos at all. Plus they used a singer from Rasmus (another sucessfull Finnish group), and his voice is quite annoying IMHO. I think their music works best without vocal at all. But next track put everything in it's places, again that great dramatic Apocalyptica sound Same feeling remains to the end of an album, until reaching it's peak with "Betrayal/Forgiveness". It starts very hard and fast with thunder-like drumming by Dave Lombardo and ends with slow and peaceful whining of cello. After which comes in my opinion the best track in this album - "Ruska". Very very beautiful, calm and... just great track

If you haven't heard Apocalyptica before, I really recommend giving it a try.
I like Angel, Nothing Else Matters, and Bittersweet.

Thanks! Just gave that a try with Autechre, works great. However, they've never heard of Swan Dive or Metric. With the latter I got Marlene Dietrich instead. I don't entirely agree with their Cardigans matches either, but it seems to work great with some other bands.

I just gave it a test run to see if it is any good, and so far I'm impressed with it. This thing is well programmed. You can actually find interesting new stuff with it. Thanks Coddington.

Edit: It doesn't know some connections, but that's okay sice I it seems to be based on statistics.

Hmm, well for me my tastes have gone to more metal/instrumental metal over the year.

What I listen to:
CKY, all the albums
Foreign Objects(same people as CKY basically)
Dream Theater(Train of Though only right now)
John Petrucci's Solo album(lead guitarist of dream theater)
Both Liquid Tension Experiment albums(basically same people as Dream Theater)

I also listen to some techno, but not much.

I regret not buying tickets for this upcoming Audioslave concert. I saw their last setlist, they are performing both soundgarden and Rage tracks.

I recently heard a jazz track with the riff from No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age (I'm sure all 5th Gear viewers know that one by now...), or at least something very, VERY similar. Tried to Google it but I can't find anything. Does anyone happen to know which track I'm looking for?

Don't know if it's this, but a portuguese band did a cover of that song.
Get it here http://ftp.ua.pt/incoming/mesa/ and Right Click on the file name, and Save Target as...
