So anyone for some Top Gear stats?

Yes I know I'm nearly a week late with these viewing figures but have had a bit of an insane week with a Swine Flu outbreak.

So Top Gear at its later time of 9pm got 5.5 million viewers with a share of 19.1%. Up against the might of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here, this isn't bad.

I'm a Celebrity in the same slot got 9.8 million with a share of 36.1% which put TG second in its slot - followed by Garrow's Law on BBC One with 4.5 million (share 15.5%).

It wasn't the MOST watched show of the night and to be honest didn't even get into the top five - but did get a respectable rating for a later timeslot on a very busy tv night.

1. The X-Factor with 14.3 million (47.9% share)
2. I'm a celeb with 9.8 million (36.1% share)
3. Doctor Who with 9.1 million (33.9% share)
4. Antiques Roadshow 5.8 million (19.5% share)
5. All Star Family Fortunes 6.1 million (22.4% share)
6. Countryfile 5.7 million (26.0% share)
7. Top Gear 5.5 million (19.1% share)
8. ITV News & Weather at 10:30 5.3 million (29.8% share)

Top Gear opened series 13 with an audience of 7.1 million and a 30.4% share.

Quote:

James Harding, the editor of the Times, today gave the clearest indication yet of how News International is going to start charging for its journalism online.

Pledging to "rewrite the economics of newspapers", Harding said the Times would charge for 24-hour access to that day's edition of the paper alongside a subscription model, but dismissed the idea of micro-payments for individual articles.

Harding said the newspaper business had to avoid the mistakes of the music industry – and call time on free distribution.

"We created a culture of free, and we absolutely were party to that," he told an audience of senior editors and executives at the Society of Editors conference in Stansted, Essex.

"In the last few years, we have talked with great pride – we believed advertising would sustain us – about unique users.

"These people were window shopping down Oxford Street – they were not coming into our shops."

He contrasted the Times's 20 million-plus unique users with the 500,000 readers who had developed a "genuine digital newspaper habit".

He confirmed that the Times – in common with other newspapers in Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation empire – would introduce online charging.

"From spring of next year we will start charging for the digital edition of the Times. We're working on the exact pricing model, but we'd charge for a day's paper, for a 24-hour sign-up to the Times. We'll also establish a subscription price as well."

The paper's recent decision to end the free distribution of bulk copies was in line with this strategy, he said.

"We think it's good for us and good for business to stop encouraging the trickery and fakery of the ABCs. We want real sales to real customers – that's what our advertisers want too."

He said the Times would also enhance its relationship with its most loyal readers through home delivery and a reward programme through the recently launched Times+ membership venture.

"Historically, newspapers have treated their best customers worst and their worst customers best," he said.

"We give the paper away to people who could not care less and we pay little or no attention to people who love it and read it every day."

He said newspapers should be wary of micro-payments for individual articles.

"You have to be very careful with article-only economics," he said. "You will find yourself writing a lot more about Britney Spears and a lot less about Tamils in northern Sri Lanka."

Indicating the costs of quality journalism, he said it had cost the Times £1.5m to run a Baghdad bureau for the duration of the Iraq war and £10,000 to send a correspondent to report on violence in northern Sri Lanka.

"We keep investing in journalism, we believe that's what our readers want. We're not dumbing down, we're dumbing up."

He said people were prepared to pay for news and cited the 270m books bought in Britain a year as evidence of an "enormous appetite for the written word and for news".

Harding said newspapers had been undervalued for years, pointing out that when the Times was founded in the 18th century it had cost more than double a coffee or a tumblerful of gin.

"We are going to rewrite the economics of the newspaper, newsgathering and delivery business," he said. "We have to do that, we are in the fight of our lives."

Harding said the newspaper industry was fighting for the "business of reporting".

"We have to make sure we have professional reporting to check the powerful and investigate the powerful on an economic, sustainable footing."

Harding struck a more conciliatory note on Google than Murdoch, who last week threatened to take content from News Corp's papers off the search engine's index.

He suggested that the Times could find a compromise solution that would exploit Google's reach while keeping its paywall intact.

"[The question is] is there a way we can move to a model where we charge people to buy the Times but enable them to source that through Google," he said.

Martin Newland, the former editor of the Daily Telegraph and now editorial director of the Abu Dhabi paper the National, said the Times itself had played a role in the undervaluing of newspapers by slashing its cover price to 10p in the 1990s.

"That first lodged in the mind of the consumer the fact that newspapers and content can be cheap," he said.

"I was smiling to see Mr Murdoch sought to re-establish value by shutting the gate well after the horse had bolted."

He said the Telegraph had "responded suicidally with a cut-price subscription scheme".

He said from reading British newspapers online he saw an "enormous, implacable dumbing down".

James has donated one of his shirts to the Children in Need auction. Much as I love the man, £350.00 is bit too much, so I won't be bidding for this one. Shame it isn't one of the ghastly ones, I would have been happy to know he wouldn't be wearing it anymore. ;)

Is that his Dino from the cheap super car challenge? And that couldn't have been real? Did they really just make him do that to his own car? Once again, an explanation would be great. Thanks

With Top Gear back on the telly and the show’s iconic ‘I am the Stig’ T-shirt charting at No.1 on Amazon this week, could Captain Slow take up the challenge to outperform the mystery driver this Christmas?

The much anticipated ‘Captain Slow’ t-shirt launches today, along with a brand new design for the nation’s favourite mystery driver, the shirt being named simply ‘Stig Standing’. Who will take pole position in the race to win over fans and make it under the Christmas tree this year?

In honour of Top Gear's not-so-fast presenter, James May, a new t-shirt design has been created to celebrate the careful driving attributes of his show nickname, ‘Captain Slow’. A must for both the careful driver and speed king alike!

Or pay homage and stay true to His Stigness with the brand new design, ‘Stig Standing’. Despite the last series ‘unveiling’ of Schumacher as The Stig, we always knew that the real identity of the driver would remain a mystery, so the intrigue continues!

Both of the new t-shirts cost £16.95 and are available in men’s sizes Small through to XXL. Children’s sizes are also available for the ‘Stig Standing’ t-shirts at £12.75. The UK’s only official Top Gear t-shirts are available online at www.officialproducts.co.uk along with a great selection of high quality 100% cotton T-shirts, each with a unique design as well as many other Top Gear gift ideas.

Top Gear fans, it’s up to you, will you let Captain Slow overtake The Stig this Christmas?

Last minute shoppers are advised to ensure their orders are in by Sunday 20th December for guaranteed delivery before Christmas.

With series 14 just starting, I figured I'd do something constructive. This is the first custom dvd style cover I made for use with XBMC, which is the media player i use to organize my videos because of its flexibility and use of meta-data which make for slick display of you collection in a home theater.

This being first draft, only screen captures from episode 1 are being used as place holders, and I plan to make one in for every series. I haven't decided whether or not to make back covers yet depending on how much interest there is for them, criticism would greatly be appreciated

i found this on the daily mail website and while not its Top Gear related i did find it fairly humorous.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worl...g-pelican.html

Here's the actual article itself

The owner of the most expensive car in the world has been forced to write off his $1m Bugatti Veyron after crashing into a lagoon.
Shocked Andy House has had calls from car enthusiast and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to commiserate about his very expensive loss.
The millionaire car collector skidded off a road in Galveston, Texas, and plunged into a saltwater lagoon.
He told police he had dropped his mobile phone as he sped alongside the lagoon while taking his newly delivered car out for a test drive.
When he looked up from picking up the phone he was startled by a low flying pelican which cause him to swerve off the road.
House escaped unhurt from the wreckage but could do nothing to stop his car - one of only 15 in the US - from submerging in the water up to its door handles.
Video footage of the crash was posted on YouTube (included below) by two car enthusiasts who had filmed the car on their mobile phone.
House has said since the crash his phone has not stopped ringing with people offering their sympathy.
He had paid £750,000 for the car last month from a dealer in Arkansas and it only had 500 miles on the clock.
Gilbert Harrison of MCH Truck and Auto, who was called out to tow the vehicle, said House was taking his loss in his stride.
'He was calm,' Harrison said. 'If it had been me, I'd have been cussing, but he was calm. I imagine inside he was probably pretty upset.'
As well as being the most expensive road car in the world it is also the fastest with a top speed of 253 miles an hour.
X-Factor judge Simon Cowell is among one of the 300 owners of the super car.

I was re-watching episode 1 from series 13 the other day and I never really understood the joke that James says about the service on Jeremy's Mercedes. To me it sounds like he's saying something along the lines of, "coola, three weeks" and I can't really make out what he's saying after that because of the laughter. Only thing that somewhat rang a bell as far as what he was talking about was 'the war', but I still couldn't figure it out.

The part of the episode I'm talking about starts at 21:22.

Any insight or clarification on this would be greatly appreciated, its driving me nuts!!
Top Gear has been in trouble again – this time for screening a spoof advertisement for Volkswagen that showed a man committing suicide by shooting himself in the head.
But this is unlikely to worry the Top Gear team too much – the popular trio are no strangers to controversy and have been in trouble with TV regulators Ofcom on several occasions before.

THE boss of the world’s first space travel firm has revealed how a film producer attempted to hire the world’s most advanced space craft – to make a porn movie.

Virgin Galactic president Will Whitehorn has said he was baffled when he was approached by someone interested in hiring the whole spacecraft – only to find out he was a porn baron.

The Scots-born boss, who heads-up Virgin’s space tourism arm for Richard Branson, said that he didn’t know how much was on offer, but that money was clearly no object.

The 49-year-old said: “We hot approached by someone who turned out to be a porn-film maker who wanted to hire the whole ship.

“They wanted to make a sex movie in space. I had to turn him down.”

Each place on SpaceShipTwo – which must be launched into the atmosphere by its powerful carrier WhiteKnightTwo – costs £120,000 per seat.

With six passenger seats on the spacecraft, the production would have brought the costs to a massive £720,000, making it one of the most expensive adult films to date.

The most expensive porn movie to date is Pirates II: Stagnetti’s revenge which cost just under £5,000,000 in 2008.

However that doesn’t compare to sleazy 1978 brit flick Caligula, which cost a staggering £10,500,000.

The flights are expected to commence in 2011, have already had a lot of interest from enthusiasts, including X-Men director Bryan Singer, physicist Stephen Hawking, F1 legends Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello and Top Gear presenters Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson.

"ANYTHING YOU CAN DO
So "the point of being a man" is to "be able to have a go at anything"? Well, James May (RT, 24 October) the point of being a woman is to have a go at anything too...including sexist blokes!
(Sandra from Birmingham)"

Were James' comments sexist? Is TG sexist? (Do bears take Charmin to the woods? Do we girlies love it like that? Does anyone care?)
