Driving it is actually not bad, 1st gear is kinda like a tractor (10" wheels = some shiatty gearing in spots), but after that it's smooth sailing. Some torque steer if you really gun it. I don't know about top speed, but a) it hits 100mph on the freeway without batting an eye, and b) it gets pretty farking scary moving that fast in something the size of a shoe box. Front drums upgraded to Cooper S discs, rear drums still in place. It probably drives a lot like you would imagine it does, what with dropping a 130hp VTEC motor in a car that weighs probably 1400lbs on a rainy day. Just a fun, zippy, slightly maniacal ride.

The rally has a few rules;
1) The car must cost no more than £100

Okay... anytime Autoblog posts anything about Buicks, I usually post how boring they are, or how they're for geriatric old farts that suffer from incontinence. Then I get marked down like crazy. Case in point:

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/19/b...ith-manual-tra

I post how this car sucks, as all buicks do, because it's soft, not even really a luxury car, and boring. So boring that it makes a Camry seem exciting. But yet... all these people defend it. There are tons of people excited about this car... and I'm not high right now, but what the hell is everyone else smoking?

I just want to get rid of the smell and respray it with new car smell or leather scent.
I heard that pumice aka volcanic rocks, charcoal, and coffee grounds helps absorb smells a lot. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Should I use Febreeze or Rug Doctor?

Years ago, I was at a military vehicles show here in Dallas. My dad and I stopped at this one guy's booth because he had an odd looking CJ-2a with brass 'Jeep' badges on it. It turns out that it was an early pre-production model and since I showed such interest, he gave me an original 1945 Jeep brochure. Anyways, the other day I was getting something off my laptop and I found these pictures I had taken of it right after I got it.

I [have not] been getting a bit of flack on the forums for my view on [automatic/auto-manual] cars. As some of you might know, I wouldn't accept a[n automatic] car even as a commuter box. I just feel that [manual] does just about everything better, and allows you to do the most fun thing possible when driving a car [for yourself], [being responsible and NOT] powersliding. [It is] childish to go everywhere sideways, but just by [common sense], you can tell it's a shit-ton [more] fun [to drive a manual car].

Most people say that [manual] is more dangerous for a mediocre driver, but I disagree with that aswell. If anything, [manual] makes you a better driver by making you appreciate [feedback] on your car (esp. on snow). With [automatic], you only really care about [what's happening on your Facebook page on your iPhone] (and [if you don't shift, you don't consciously realize how fast you are going], [and then] you're going straight into the [cement wall on a freeway exit ramp]), [manual] makes you learn [car] control [more throughly], and makes you better at [judging the situation better] when needed. Other + points include more [fuel economy], [smoother] traction [control] under [adverse conditions] and [having] more [predictable controls to a car].

I just couldn't justify buying a[n automatic] car, [even if] it was DIRT cheap, and I absolutely [NOT] commute in [one]. Not when there are [plenty of manual] options available. Sure, they might [be a bit harder to find in the] used car marked (atleast they do in [America]), but there is a reason for that. [The average American motorist is retarded].

So, I ask you, are there any other people here who feel that [two pedal cars are] for feeble people who don't know what they are missing?
:)

(I understand that this post is highly opinionated and not very cohesive.)

Note: I stole this from Posmo and shamelessly edited it.

My added bit: I don't care if the two pedal is SST, SMG, DSG, PDK, wet clutch, F1 shifters, semi manual, "fastest transmission in the world" or whatever they call it. A working manual gearbox > the best 2 pedal car in the world.

I would consider a bike semi-manual transmission (3 pedals and a switch or some paddles for shifting) if I was at the track, otherwise H-gate shifter and 3 pedals for a daily driver.

And yes, I would buy a large luxury wagon with a proper gearbox.

I'm on Part 6 right now. It's an interesting peek into how the car sales business really works.

So far I've learned that you really need to do your homework on any car you want to get and, if at all possible, make the deal with fleet sales for a lower price than walking into the dealership.

This is a great resource for anyone searching for a car. It might also be helpful to write down the formulas for calculating interest.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interest

There are some apps available on the Android Market for calculating mortgage payments that might be helpful in negotiation. I bet they are also on the iPhone app store.

Back when we were but wee little Autobloggers, Easter was one of our favorite holidays. Not that we were religious, mind, we just really dug finding baskets filled with sugary treats nestled in plastic grass first thing in the morning. As far as we were concerned, you could keep your colored eggs, your jellybeans, your Cadbury creme eggs – heck, we weren't even that excited about those supernaturally yellow marshmallow Peep things – we wanted the Big Daddy – the solid chocolate bunny.

You can imagine our horror, then, when at some point in our childhood, our long-eared cacao friend went on a diet, although we didn't know it right off. Oh, he looked about the same – and he even sported the same jaunty tinfoil jacket. But he weighed much less – he was – *shudder* – hollow. Empty inside like our little crestfallen Easter morning spirits.

Thankfully, these many years later, Porsche Centrum Gelderland appears to be going some way towards healing our childhood wounds and restoring our faith in humanity. Well, if not humanity, at least in the validity of hollow chocolate treats. You see, the Dutch Porsche dealership has apparently taken a brand-new 911 Carrera S and as a sort of marketing stunt, they've gone and covered it in chocolate. According to AB tipster Patrick, in the absence of a giant dipping mechanism, they've used 175 kilos of molten goodness (that's about 385 pounds) to conceal Stuttgart's finest, reserving another couple kilos of white chocolate for detailing like the headlamps.

Why on earth did they decide to do this? It's apparently for a Dutch holiday centered around "Sinterklaas" – Saint Nicholas – who was the Danish inspiration for Santa Claus. As the story goes, the holiday is held in The Netherlands on the evening of December 5, and one of the holiday's most storied traditions is that people buy or make chocolate letters in celebration – hence the milky goodness that is Centrum Gelderland's Choco997.

The dipped Porsche will remain on display until Christmas, at which time we fully expect to see it wheeled into a walk-in freezer until it can to be thawed in time to make an appearance in our Easter basket next Spring. Thanks for the tip, Patrick!

(Directly copied from a somethingawful post (any AI goons on finalgear?), before someone calls me on it, i thought i could get some good discussion going on here as well)

Hello, i've posted previously looking for advice on a new car purchase for my girlfriend, the hunt quickly boiled down to a miata, of course. I said if you get a boring horrible car you'll regret it every day and having a car that is somewhat interesting (I am by no means advocating a high-end sports car for an inexperienced driver), your day will be just a little better, if only on the drive to and from work.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those who didnt see the last thread, i'll post some simple stats

Requirements:
*Would like to have it on the road for 10 or 11 grand tops, less is better.
*Must be manual
*Located in or near south florida - broward

Would be nice:
*Fun and interesting looking, remember as a female car buyer, "ohh thats a pretty blue" superficiality is in effect, excuse my sexism.

Deal killers:
*Hatchback
*Unreliable, even if maintenance is kept up with
*Ridiculous sports car (She wanted a RX-8, we both worried thats just too fast)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, the reason i made this new thread is because at the last minute, as the week of purchase came up, she gets rear-ended in her moms Ford Exploder V6. The car is fine (Well the ford anyway, the jaaaag was demolished), shes fine, but suddenly decided that a miata might be unsafe due to its small size. Not only for the actual impact but due to people in bigger cars not being able to see her in the next lane over, for instance.

AI, please help me reassure her that a 90's japanese 4 cylinder (hopefully with a functional roll bar) is perfectly safe to daily drive, and getting a bigger car is not needed. Or am i the wrong one, and a miata is actually unsafe for an inexperienced driver? Feel free to make other suggestions, and thank you for reading :)

I spend a lot of time on the loo looking at the cars in the back of the TG magazine wondering which I'd buy for a certain ammount of money. So this is what we are going to do now:

Each week I will make this thread, with a different budget, and you will choose you top 3 cars. If it catches on, I will make a list of this forums favourite car on a budget.

Rules:

1. You must keep to the budget, not a pound over. Use the current currency exchange rate. You may use any dealers and such like to find a good deal. It doesn't have to be the list price.

2. It must be a new car, no used cars allowed.

3. It has to be a car currently on sale in your country.

State:

1. Your top 3 in order - with price and source.

2. Reasons for and against if you want to.

Today's budget: 12,436 pounds

And if you get 'em all right, you get a chance to win your way into a Porsche 911 Evolution driving course. Which, we have to say, is pretty dang cool. Here's how it works. Porsche has the challenge broken up into five categories. You hit play and guess which engine you're listening to. We went ahead and gave it the old college try and, uh, it's incredibly difficult. Like, we bet that Porsche mechanics would have a difficult time getting all five correct.

But never mind that, because it's fun! The first category (Carrera) wants you to guess between a 964, a 996 and a 997. Second is "Classic" where you must distinguish between a RS 2.7, RS 3.0 and RS 3.8. Good luck with that one. Next up is "Race Derived" and the choices are 964 RS 3.8, 996 GT3 and 997 GT3. Hard, right? Because air-cooled boxer motors pretty much sound alike, even when they get water cooled. Well, actually...

The test now turns difficult, as the next category is "Turbo." This is especially hard as most Turbos do little more than shuffle about town from mall to mall -- meaning it's rare to hear one at full clip. And you've got to distinguish between the 930, 996 and 997. Lastly, you have "Motorsport," and whether or not the car is the 935, 911 GT1 or 936 it don't matter, as the sound is just glorious. See -- we mean hear -- for yourself.

I had a low speed crash into the back of a white van, it was a badly surfaced road, we were stopped, pulled away.... and the person infront of the van stopped for no reason, causing the van to tap the tow bar of the car infront and me in sympathy to do the same to the van.
Ok enough of the excuses, I am posting here to make sure noone makes the same mistake I did. I thought long and hard about posting this, but i think it is important that other GTR owners see this so they aren't stung by a careless accident and the GTR Tax!
To help promote the launch of the new Evolution 911 course at the Porsche Experience Center in Silverstone, England, the company has unveiled a new game which challenges enthusiasts to identify specific 911 models by the sound of their exhaust note.

The site, has five different categories (Carrera, Classic, Race Derived, 911 Turbo, and Motorsport) and three possible vehicles for each exhaust note. While the game doesn't tell you if your choices are correct, players are entered into a drawing for a chance to win an Evolution 911 driving experience.

The £275 Evolution 911 course is a 90 minute program which gives visitors the opportunity to drive a 1986 911 3.2 Carrera (G series), a 1994 911 Carrera (Type 993), and a current generation 911 Carrera S (Type 997)

Now for some...

It's been a while since I reviewed a car. Not that I didn't have my fun with rentals, only I always got cars I already had before.

Now for some time I finally have gotten something new: A Volkswagen Tiguan.

After the Volvo XC60, which I didn't like much to be honest, this is the second of the so-called "small" MPV's I have the opportunity to test out.

The good thing about owning a VW, is that you will immediately be able to use all switches and levers in any other VW, because they are always where you expect them to be.

I received the Tiguan yesterday, when it was already dark and I had absolutely no problem at all to find my way around in it. Unlike with the Volvo I mentioned above, I didn't have to go back to the rental and ask for help in finding switches or turn to the user manual to get something working.

Also (and that is an important point) I could easily find a fine sitting position and didn't have to leave the car to adjust the seat -- even without electrical seat adjustment (just a small hint towards the Volvo defenders ;))

The obviously basic Tiguan seats aren't what I would call state-of-the-art as well. But in contrast to the Volvo's, which only consist of foam from army bunk mattresses, the ones in the VW at least offer some side support and have a grippier surface, so you don't slide around and cling to the steering wheel with your life, when you turn quickly around a corner.

Also the footwell offers enough room for my legs and my left foot to rest and I do not hit my knees or other body parts at hard plastic edges or door handles, while driving. Again Volvo loses here in this comparison.

So my first impression was: Yes, I feel at home in this one.

My second one was: Oh dear, what's that clattering noise next to my left ear everytime the road gets rough?

Well, it's the seat belt retainer, which seems to have rather loose insides and clatters and squeaks right into your left ear. Very irritating and not exactly good build quality. The rest of the car, however, is solid as a rock. The interior makes a good quality impression, there is lots of space even on the back seats for persons like me and also lots of boot space. The tailgate is a bit heavy, though, and it needs some muscle power to shut it. So if you see a woman struggling with closing the tailgate on a Tiguan, don't laugh.

The Tiguan I had, came with the 2.0 liter Diesel engine with 140 HP and the 6-speed manual gearbox, which I already know from the Scirocco. However, while in the Scirocco it clearly is a complete mess, both engine and gearbox fit to the character of the Tiguan. Not only that but also the gears can all be used effectively.

However, shifting gears needs conentration from your side, because the gears are not very well defined and I more than once ended up in 6th, when I wanted the 4th. The clutch has a hefty bite and works binary (on or off), which is okay once you get used to it. The first times I shifted down, though, I nearly went through the front window, because it kicks in sudden and hard. Not the ideal car for driving schools...

The 140 HP of the engine prevent you from being quick: The car weighs a lot and has a lot of air drag, so the top speed is around 190 km/h -- with a veeeery long run-up to that. And it gets loud inside then, too. The engine is clearly a bit dated by now. Still not nearly as loud and shaky, as the 4-pot in the BMW 120d I had earlier this year, or -- heaven forbid -- the catastrophically bad Mercedes 4-cyliner diesel I once had in the B-Class.

However, if you keep the engine in the torque zone from about 1500 to 3000 rpm, you will move around town and country just fine.

Stay above 1400 rpm, though, because at 60 km/h in 5th gear (which is about 1200-1300 rpm) there is a deep frequency drone, which is enormously annoying. Same happens at 70 km/h in 6th gear. So driving at low revs with this car is only recommendable, if you think living inside a sub woofer is a great thing.

The turbo kicks in very sudden after a rather big turbo lag. The power is enough to overtake for example a big truck or two camper vans in an acceptable time. Don't expect any acceleration wonders on the Autobahn, though.

One of the biggest weaknesses of the Tiguan is the fact, that no matter where you look, your field of vision encounters large amounts of bodywork: The A-pillar is particularly fat, which makes it difficult to look into a corner. You are constantly moving around your upper body in order to see out and without the use of panned down side mirrors and the parking sensors you will inevitably have some dents and scratches in no time.

So far my review of the VW Tiguan contains light and shadow.

But The Tiguan has a big ace up its sleeve: Sublime road behaviour.

Normally when I have a comfy SUV or MPV, it's a blancmange when it comes to handling. The Mercedes ML-Class for example always gives you the feeling, that the momentum will carry you out of the corner.

The Volvo XC60, which is more like a direct competitor to the Tiguan, was also very comfy but frankly had very lousy road behaviour. You always needed to correct the steering and on narrow roads, you were actually afraid of either heading into the opposite traffic or into the ditch.

The Tiguan is very comfy, too. And I mean comfy. It almost glides like a hovercraft over bumped and bruised roads, which you can tell by my videos, because the camera hardly ever rattles. Only very hard joints in the road or big potholes come through and you hear them more, than you can feel them.

But in contrast to the Volvo, the Tiguan also offers excellent handling and great stability, even on wavy and bumpy backroads. Unlike in the Volvo you won't break into sweat, everytime another car comes towards you from the opposite direction on a narrow road.

The compromise VW found between comfort and roadability, is a masterpiece.

The Tiguan likes corners, feels nimble and planted in every situation you can encounter. It actually reminds me of the BMW X5, which has similar road behaviour but is not quite as comfortable.

Of course my Tiguan was equipped with the 4Motion AWD. You can also order it with FWD but nobody in their right mind should even consider that. In the current weather for example -- wet streets with lots of leaves on the road -- you cannot value AWD high enough.

So my bottom line is: Great multi purpose vehicle, with faults in details, which definitely could use or even needs a much more powerful engine.

Now for the pictures:

The design tries hard to cover the fact, that it's just a big, boxy car, and succeeds at least partially with that.

Much space inside. I would even fit perfectly in the back behind the driver's seat, if I was the driver ;)

See the knob to adjust the backrest of the seat? It can be reached without leaving the car. Are you listening, Volvo???

The tailgate is heavy and needs some effort to close it. You need to use the whole hand. I was holding a crate of Coke in my left hand and the house keys in my right hand and was struggling to throw it down with only two fingers to use.

That A-pillar is huge. It effectively blocks your view, when you want to turn left.

The interior can almost be called funky for Volkswagen standards

I will post the videos later. Much later probably, because my upload speed sucks and this car review of mine is the first one ever, where I made all the vids in HD.

But you will be in for a treat, if you wait. Because for the first time I made an audio commentary :D

So if you wanna hear a bloke sounding stupid with a hard German accent, while trying to think of the right words in English, when concentrating on driving a car, wait for it

To most auto enthusiasts, the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife track is known as the Green Hell. Why you may be asking, because even if the stretch of pavement is only 21 kilometers long, the number of accidents that take place at the ’Ring are beyond your imagination, it is said that everyday the track is open for public use that at least one sports car owner walks away with a heap of scrap metal.

The latest victim of the Nordschleife is a BMW M3, and from the looks of things, the German sports coupe is a total loss. Believe it or not the M3 was being driven by an experienced pilot, but even for a knowledgeable Ringmeister negotiating all 100 corners of the Green Hell can be a bit tricky. The other problem with high speed lapping sessions around the Nurburgring is that you have lots of traffic to contend with. As a result, the M3 driver entered into a blind curve where he hit a Mini Cooper that was keeping a slower pace and ended both racing enthusiasts day. After the impact the BMW M3 caught fire and as you can see it is completely destroyed, not to mention that the Mini didn’t fare to well either.

CAR FEATURE>> RAUH WELT NATTY DREAD - Speedhunters

We are all great admirers of Nakai-san and Rauh Welt here at Speedhunters. The cars that have rolled out of this small countryside body-shop in Chiba-ken have pretty much all assumed cult status. Nakai's creations are all about raw style, a vision into what he thinks a Porsche should look, sound and even smell like! There are no compromises here, the cars that bare the Rauh Welt touch have been built for one simple thing, driving.

I though it would be cool to take a nice and detailed look into one of the last cars Nakai-san has built, a customer car that has already done the rounds on the internet, the 993-based Natty Dread. This, like all Rauh Welt cars, is a prime example of stance...it sits so well on its deeply-dished SSRs, sporting the most aggressively widened fenders this side of a fully-fledged race car.

Nakai-san is without a doubt a man of insight, he sees things clearly, and it's precisely this that has allowed him to create an unmistakable style. His customers trust him; they allow him to go wild on their pride and joy like a painter would on a bare canvas.

The result may shock purists, but for many others it calls for tons of respect. And rightly so, just look at the Natty Dread in its natural environment, the race track.

When Keiji-san, the owner of the Natty Dread, approached Nakai he wanted his 993 turned into a more focused track weapon. With the mechanical side of things already being worked on it was the exterior that needed to be given that unmistakable Rauh Welt touch.

The Carrera 2 was already wearing some nice parts like the Sunburst front bumper, but it was in dire need of a serious dose of widening. Nakai made up some GT-2-style front and rear overfenders, fixed into position via a series of rivets that have been left exposed for that raw touch. The same goes for the custom chunky skirts but it was the front spoiler that really impressed me the most. It is actually a thick strip of durable rubber held in place around the lower section of the front bumper with a series of self-tapping screws. It literally scrapes the ground on any incline, but thanks to its flexibility never actually chips or brakes! Genius! Twin carbon front canards are there to increase front-end bite when at speed, as much of the weight is hanging off the rear axle!

The Sunburst rear hood/tail is cut out to allow the air-cooled flat-six to breathe.

The front 10Jx18" SSR SP1 are custom painted at Rauh Welt by Nojima-san, the owner of the matte black AE86 Trueno we have seen before on Speedhunters. I really liked the satin bronze finish, kind of made them look anodized from a distance. These are joined by wider 12Jx18" at the rears and are all wrapped in Hankook Ventus TD semi-slick rubber, a brand that is becoming ever so popular in Japan.

The Rauh Welt feel is carried over in the interior which can best be described as spartan. Notice how the clocks have been slightly rotated counterclockwise, a style that I used to see on modified JDM machinery like drag cars back in the day. The deeply cupped OMP steering wheel is fitted on a snap-off Works Bell boss.

To boost torsional rigidity the chassis was spot welded and fitted with a custom roll-cage. Here is a view down at the pedal area where you can once again see how everything has been done to make Keiji-san feel more comfortable while driving on track.

Everything that was surplus to requirement was simply ripped off and thrown out, like the door cards replaced by far rawer looking carbon fiber panels. And notice the makeshift door handles made from bits of red nylon straps! Simplicity rules.

Check out how only the top part of the stock dashboard remains, there is no glove box, most of the center console is gone, much like the rest of the trim. The two Recaro seats, the driver one a more deeply cupped bucket, are joined by Sablet harnesses.

This is a nice detail, the stock side window has been replaced by an acrylic sheet bent inwards to form a perfect intake helping feed the engine. The air is taken from each side into the engine bay via those big red flexible pipes you see in the background. Also I'm guessing either Nakai-san or Keiji-san are fans of Jamaican beer!

Keiji-san had Promodet, a well known Japanese Porsche tuner, take care of all the engine work on his 993, work that has been kept simple as he just loves how balanced his car feels. You can get a nice view of the Sunburst rear bumper from the above shot, with those shark-like gills on each side.

The air-cooled 3.6L flat-6 has been slightly tuned thanks to a full Promodet exhaust system and custom titanium intake pipe onto which the cone filter is attached. Engine management is taken care by a Motec M48 stand-alone ECU mapped by the guys at Promodet.

While the 993 was in at Promodet the stock brakes were swapped out for a front and rear set of 993 RS calipers along with 2-piece drilled rotors. Clearance with the SSRs is pretty tight!

Nakai-san explained how he always experiments when painting cars, for example the Natty Dread has some red mixed into the matt black and the base coat is actually a silver if I recall correctly. It's hard to tell but each one of the cars really does look different under the light.

I asked a German-speaking friend of mine if Rauh Welt (rough world) actually made sense, and it seems that "Rauh" or "rough" is more related to texture which could explain why Nakai-san paints most of his cars a matte color. Will have to ask him next time I see him.

I've been lucky enough to shoot tons of cool cars over the years but none have come close to matching the presence of a Rauh Welt Porsche. I'd like to thank Nakai-san for welcoming Speedhunters back to his shop once again and Keiji-san for letting me get close and personal with the Natty Dread. Trust me, this is not the last we will see from Rauh Welt!

So I'm now a grad student in Mechanical Engineering and I'm giving a half hour presentation on biofuels and their use in increasing engine power as part of a biofuel seminar series. I'm going to spend the majority of the presentation talking about a power/consumption/cost analysis but at the beginning I want to spend a few minutes talking about some of the cars that have recently come out that have used biofuels. For example, I have the Lotus 265E and the 270E Trifuel Concept, the Ferrari F430, and the Koenigsegg CCXR. Are there any others that I'm missing?

I'd prefer to include production cars so I can compare them to the regular gasoline engine but would consider racecars if I knew how much the change in fuel affected the power.

Thanks for the help.

Underwater, Literally, With a $2 Million Bugatti

By RICHARD S. CHANG

Eddie Griffin might finally be off the hook for the most ridiculous crash in a priceless supercar. On Wednesday, a man drove a Bugatti Veyron into a lagoon in Texas after avoiding a low-flying pelican.

According to The Galveston County Daily News, the driver was checking out real estate in La Marque, Tex., when the pelican swooped into view:

The man jerked the wheel, dropped his cellphone and the car’s front tire left the frontage road and entered a muddy patch, which foiled his attempt to maneuver away from the lagoon.

The Veyron’s powerful engine gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died.

The man was uninjured, physically, though after drowning the Veyron, which is priced at around $2 million, his ego might be a little damaged. (Lawrence Ulrich reviewed the new Veyron in The Times earlier this month.)

Now, Autoblog has unearthed video of the Veyron being towed out of the water:

The Porsche 989 was a 4-door performance-oriented touring sedan concept created by Porsche in 1988. The vehicle was never produced.

Increased sales of Porsche's 928 model during the mid-1980s prompted executives to consider adding another large, sporty touring vehicle to the lineup, this time a 4-door that could serve as a more practical but equally as powerful and exciting alternative to the 928. Porsche engineer Dr. Ulrich Bez was put in charge of the project and given instructions that the vehicle should be luxurious and comfortable but offer a sporting nature superior to what could be attained in large sedans from Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
Bez designed a new front-engine, rear-drive platform with a [wheelbase of 2,826 mm and power coming from a new 80-degree, water cooled V8 engine with a power output of around 300 bhp. Some discrepancy has arisen as to the engine displacement, which is reported as being between 3.6 and 4.2 litres.
The prototype made from Bez's technical designs was styled by Harm Lagaay, a design which influenced other models yet to come and that held many design similarities to the 911 despite the difference in engine placement. Specific design influences to later Porsche models include the control-arm suspension and 959-esque headlamps which would later be used on the 993 as well as the overall shape and tail-light design which were adapted for the 996 generation 911.

After Ulrich Bez left Porsche in September of 1991, the project lost momentum. Severely slumped 928 sales made executives re-think the viability of the idea, and low overall profits during the 1989 to 1991 model years meant the model would be far more risky for the company to build than had been thought during development. In January 1992, development was halted completely. Although Porsche officials initially claimed that the only prototype was destroyed, they now contend that it still remains in storage. A rear-view photograph of the prototype (silver color, 17 inch Cup II wheels, unregistered licence plate BB-PW 989) is published in the German classic car magazine Motor Klassik.

The Porsche Panamera, due out in 2009, can be considered the successor to the 989 project.
In 1988, Porsche was on a concept-car roll - the Porsche 969, Porsche 989, Porsche Panamericana and the next-generation 911 were all in the pipeline, and Porsche, with its bank account brimming with bucks, embarked upon another project - the Porsche Varrera. The Varrera was to be an MPV, or Minivan, based upon the Volkswagen Sharan chassis, and powered by the ubiquitous flat-six engine from the 911.

Porsche initially embarked upon such a project in the Sixties, under the codename EA226, as the Stuttgart concern hankered after a vehicle with the performance of a 911, but the storage space of a van. Needless to say, EA226 was cancelled, but Porsche felt that it was necessary to produce such a vehicle for the next decade. Working closely with VW, the Varrera would sit upon a highly modified Sharan chassis, but would feature the flat-six and gearbox from the 911. The Varrera was also to use very similar bodywork to the Sharan, with different lights and bumpers to make it look more 'Porsche'. Harm Lagaay was again used to create the bodywork modifications, and the interior would also be appreciably different from the VW - projected designs featured a unique dashboard, the traditional Eighties Porsche steering wheel and leather trimmed, wide-bolstered seats. A proper stereo and full electric system would compliment the interior. It was never confirmed whether the Varrera would use the seven-seat layout of the Sharan.

The prototype was photographed in a light gold metallic, and fitted with Cup alloys. The project was terminated (some say that this project was the first to be axed in the late 1988/early 1989 prototype cull, which saw the Panamericana, 989 and 969 scrapped) but the spirit lives on today in the Porsche Cayenne. To all accounts, the prototype was destroyed.
The Porsche Panamericana was produced in 1989 to celebrate Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche's ( ferry) 80th birthday. The car was based upon the recently-released Porsche 964, in Carrera 4 guise, and was displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 to display Porsche's new design direction.

The Harm Lagaay-styled Panamericana was developed in the short space of six months, with the conversion work being completed by the Prototype Department at the Porsche factory in Weissach. The bodywork used many new materials and production processes, such as the use of carbon and plastic composites. Speedline were contracted to produce a unique three-spoke, three-piece alloy wheel design.
It was the bodystyling which got everybody talking, though. Following on from the 959, the wings were smoother and more streamlined than the standard 964's, and the car was fitted with capacious wheel arches, which allowed it to be used offroad if so desired. The car rode higher than the standard 964, and the roofline was completely different, due to the appearance of the next-generation 'Targa' roof, which could be covered with a pink fabric sheet and secured by a zip. The interior also got the concept car treatment, with the leather seats colour-matched to the bodywork.
Although Lagaay hoped that the Panamericana would enter a limited production run early in the 1990s, the Porsche management blanket was also applied to the Panamericana project, and hence it was stopped in its tracks, along with the 969 and 989. However, the design lessons learnt in the production of the Panamericana were utilised on the Porsche 993, and especially the Targa model, which benefitted from the full-length sunroof - albeit with a glass panel instead of pink fabric. The lights, front and rear, were aped on the Porsche Boxster and Porsche 996, and the carbon composite panels were used in Porsche's racing projects.
Reportedly, Ferdinand Porsche still has the car.

I told him that I didn't know of any roads, but I can't think of any more expert advice than locals. Help out my brother and post up what you know. Google Maps of routes would be very helpful, so please include the link (not just a screen shot of the image) so he can find out how to get to the start of your road/route.

Also, any information about where to stay, things to do and where to eat would be great. He's not registered on here, but I will send him a link to the thread so he can at least view it when he's at work (no internet at his place).

Who knows, you might see him out on the road. There can't be that many bright blue Acura RSXs in Europe (at least not with the Acura badge)

I really hope this isn't a repost, because they were all out of order, and I spent the last 2 hours reordering them into something that sort of resembled chronological order.
Enjoy the assembly process of the most awesome Porsche ever.
It is often said that art is subjective and might mean different things to different people.

But a show put on by Newcastle University graduate Joseph Steele certainly falls into the ‘controversial’ bracket of modern art.

Steele put on a show in Newcastle on October 29 that saw him and a friend riding into a gallery on motorbikes and smashing up an old Skoda with crowbars while surrounded by scantily clad models.
Take a look at our slideshow of the gratuitous destruction of the Skoda, which we are able to bring to you.
What we can’t show you is the adult film the artists then showed to the 120-odd people in attendance.

After months of rumors, grainy spy shots and leaked information, Ducati has finally pulled the wraps off its 2010 Multistrada 1200. As with the original MTS, Ducati wanted to create a machine with sportbike-level performance that could be attained on nearly any kind of surface terrain. This time, though, the Italian manufacturer started with its latest liquid-cooled Testastretta powerplant as used in the top-level 1198 superbike, athough altered with revised valve overlap for smoother power delivery and a 15-percent improvement in fuel consumption and emissions.

Ducati says the new Multistrada 1200 is "four bikes in one," and has thus bestowed its new motorcycle with four distinct Riding Modes that alter power and traction control levels: Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro. Sport mode offers the full 150-horsepower experience with a low amount of traction control and Touring mode is intended for everyday riding. Urban and Enduro modes tone things down several notches to 100 horsepower – and opting for the latter also raises the suspension and sets the traction control to its least-active setting.

Uplevel S models get a new Ducati Electronic Suspension setup that can be tailored to adjust spring pre-load along with rebound and compression damping with options for rider only, rider with luggage, rider and passenger or rider and passenger with luggage. Ducati says that the Multistrada 1200's 417-pound dry weight is the lowest in its class, though a full 5.3-gallon load of fuel (enough for 186 miles between fill-ups) would certainly raise that a bit. Pricing starts at $14,995 before any options are added. Hit the jump for the rest of the details and check out our high-res image gallery below.
MULTISTRADA 1200 - THE BEGINNING

'A new biking concept'. That was the brief given to the Ducati designers when they started work on the original Multistrada. It arrived on the market in spring of 2003 and created a new and exciting segment, typical of the Bologna manufacturer. A new vision which combined sports performance with trail-blazing capabilities while providing an extremely comfortable ride and unrivalled versatility.

Initially produced with the air-cooled 1000 DS engine, which was later upgraded to 1100cc in 2006, the Multistrada immediately made a name for itself with its bold personality. Thanks to an impressive technical specification it soon became synonymous with pure riding pleasure, being equally at ease on mountain roads and motorways, ideal for long distances while agile and manageable in town.

Now, Ducati have taken the concept further, with a design that satisfies all the demands of a motorcyclist combined into one bike: a Multistrada with the emphasis on Multi, a sportbike which is powerful and fun but also easy to ride and whose first priority is safety and comfort.

The new Multistrada 1200 has arrived.

Ducati wanted to produce a motorcycle to tackle any kind of journey and road surface, a motorcycle that used technology derived from the Bologna-made race bikes in MotoGP and World Superbike. A bike without limits, which could transform itself to suit the rider's needs and not the other way around. A motorcycle that is four bikes in one.

From a supersport to a tourer for long journeys with a passenger and luggage, to an everyday bike which could breeze through the daily commute and also tackle off-road routes with the agility of an enduro. The goal was a versatile bike able to achieve impressive levels of performance at all times and in all places. A bike that didn't exist until now!

Ducati have once again pushed the limits of motorcycle design by adding Italian innovation to the elegance, style and technology which characterises the motorcycles that come out of its Bologna factory. All it needed was a heart, the perfect engine to realise the potential of this new design. The obvious starting point was the World Championship-winning engine, the Testastretta, used on the Superbike 1198 and work started to create the perfect power characteristics for the Multistrada 1200. Engineers in Bologna have succeeded in harnessing the immense power of this engine, making it smooth and adaptable to suit to any occasion. They have created the new Testastretta 11° engine, a significant step forward in balancing performance with usability.

MULTISTRADA 1200: FOUR-BIKES-IN-ONE!

Four different motorcycles, available at the touch of a button, change the fundamental characteristics of the new Multistrada 1200. Power and torque delivery, suspension settings, and traction control can be changed – even while riding – to enable the motorcycle to adapt to the needs of the rider and not the other way around. With the Multistrada 1200, Ducati introduce the concept of four-bikes-in-one with four Riding Modes: Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro.

The Sport Riding Mode provides the rider with an adrenalin-fuelled ride, where 150hp and incredible torque delivery are combined with a sports-oriented suspension set-up. To impart precise and focussed handling like a sportbike, it also slightly reduces Ducati Traction Control intervention to level 3 for expert riders whose 'comfort zone' is closer to the limit.

The Touring Riding Mode is still programmed to produce 150hp; however, the power characteristic is designed in a touring configuration with much smoother torque delivery, but ready to respond when needed. Safety is enhanced with the most advanced ABS technology and with the Ducati Traction Control system set to level 5 (intermediate intervention), specifically intended for a stable and relaxing ride. The suspension set-up is ideal for touring, ensuring maximum comfort for both the rider and passenger.

Navigating through the urban jungle requires an even more manageable motorcycle that can be used 365 days a year, whether travelling to work or grabbing a coffee in town. Selecting the Urban Riding Mode instantly changes the power to 100hp, and the suspension to the perfect setting for tackling the maze of city streets full of speed bumps and drain covers. The traction control level is set to 7, providing high system intervention so the rider can enjoy enhanced safety even in the most chaotic of stop-start traffic.

Should the journey aboard the Multistrada 1200 leave the beaten track, it has the capability to take off-road routes in its stride. Agile and lightweight and with high, wide handlebars, serrated footrests and specially designed tyres, the Multistrada also features an Enduro Riding Mode which instantly transforms the bike with a smooth 100hp engine, higher suspension, and the option to disable the ABS. Traction control is reduced to the minimum of level 1 for almost no intervention.

The four-bikes-in-one concept uses three technologies which interact to instantly change the chassis set-up and character of the Multistrada 1200. Fitted as standard equipment on all versions, the electronic ride-by-wire system administers three different engine mappings to change the character of the engine, while Ducati Traction Control (DTC) uses eight levels of system interaction to enhance control. For the 'S' version, Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES) instantly configures the suspension set-up to suit 'rider only', 'rider with luggage', 'rider and passenger' or 'rider and passenger with luggage'.

RIDE-BY-WIRE

The ride-by-wire system is an electronic interface between the throttle grip and the engine which decides the ideal power delivery of the engine depending on the Riding Mode selected and the rider's throttle input. The throttle grip no longer uses a throttle cable, but instead delivers a signal to the control unit, which in turn operates the throttle body butterflies.

The ride-by-wire system enables three different engine mappings to adjust the total power output and the way in which it is delivered. The three maps offer 150hp with a sports-type delivery, 150hp with a progressive delivery and 100hp also with progressive delivery.

DUCATI TRACTION CONTROL (DTC)

The racing-derived DTC is a highly intelligent system which acts as a filter between the rider's right hand and the rear tyre. Within milliseconds, DTC is able to detect and then control rear wheel-spin, considerable increasing the bike's safety and performance. The system offers eight 'levels of sensitivity', each programmed with a level of rear wheel-spin tolerance in line with progressive levels of riding skills classified from one to eight. Level one is programmed to offer the least amount of interaction while level eight uses the most amount of interaction. DTC is an integral part of the pre-programmed Riding Modes on the Multistrada 1200; however, its setting can be customised by the user.
ÖHLINS SUSPENSION WITH DUCATI ELECTRONIC SUSPENSION (DES)

The 'S' versions of the Multistrada 1200 are equipped with the latest generation 48mm Öhlins suspension featuring the innovative Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES). The brand new fork technology enables spring pre-load and rebound and compression damping adjustments electronically controlled via the instrument panel. The Öhlins rear monoshock is also adjusted electronically in spring pre-load and rebound and compression damping.

The electronic suspension adjustment can either be made by using the pre-set riding modes, which have been developed by Ducati test riders, or in independent mode, which allows riders to use their own personal settings. Adjustments made via the instrumentation send a signal that initiates electronic actuators mounted on the suspension units.

TESTASTRETTA 11° power and control, the ideal travelling companion

The starting point for the complex and innovative Multistrada 1200 project was the engine.

As a prestigious model the motorcycle had to be powered by the most advanced, evolved twin-cylinder engine to come out of the Ducati factory. It had to be the Testastretta Evoluzione used on the world-beating 1198.

The challenge, however, was to produce an engine that would be enjoyable to use in all conditions and able to adapt to the rider's character and not the other way around. Making the best ever L-Twin performance engine smoother and more user-friendly was indeed a challenge, but Ducati's innovative designers and engineers met the challenge by creating the revolutionary Testastretta 11° engine.
WHY 11°?

For a motorcycle intended for touring, the smoothness and user-friendliness of the engine is key to achieving an effortless and comfortable ride. The main engine characteristic that enabled this configuration was the valve overlap angle.

The overlap angle is defined as the interval of crankshaft rotation, measured in degrees, during which both the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time. This overlap occurs between the end of the exhaust stroke and the start of the intake stroke. High performance engines, which are subject to compromising smoothness for extreme power delivery, use high values of this parameter in order to benefit from the pressure waves to improve engine performance by maximising volumetric efficiency.

On the new Testastretta 11° engine, this angle has been reduced from 41°, used in the Testastretta Evoluzione engine which powers the 1198, to just 11°. As a result, the fresh inlet charge flow is less compromised by the exiting exhaust gases, resulting in a much smoother combustion in addition to improved fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions. Unburnt hydrocarbon emissions (pre-catalyser) are reduced by up to 65% and specific fuel consumption (and consequent CO2 emissions) by up to 15% (Euro3).

With its 150hp and 12.1kgm (87.5lb-ft) of torque, the new Testastretta 11° sets a new standard for Ducati twin-cylinder engines. Tests on fluid dynamics through the ports and in the combustion chamber have resulted in a modified power delivery profile and specifically the torque. New intake and exhaust ports combined with a radical adjustment of the cam timing and slight reduction of the compression ratio have enabled Ducati to achieve a favourable torque curve at low rpm, which remains strong through a wide range. This particular characteristic considerably enhances the Multistrada 1200's ridability.

The gearbox and final drive ratios have also been optimised to enable the use of a higher-ratio 6th gear. This solution not only enables reduced fuel consumption, but also achieves increased riding comfort by reducing vibration. To give a practical example, if the 1198 reaches its top speed in 6th gear, the Multistrada 1200 is able to reach it in 5th gear and maintain it effortlessly in 6th.

The Multistrada 1200 features an oil bath clutch with 'slipper' function and super-light feel at the lever. Its design uses a progressive self-servo mechanism that presses the plates together when under drive from the engine, enabling the reduction of the clutch spring rates. This results in a much lighter clutch lever at the handlebar, ideal in stop-start traffic or long journeys. When the drive force is reversed, the same mechanism reduces the pressure on the clutch plates, enabling them to provide a race-like 'slipper' action, which reduces the destabilizing effect of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting and provides a much smoother feeling when closing the throttle or down-shifting under normal riding conditions.

189kg sets a new benchmark

Constantly reducing weight is part of the design brief for all Ducati models. Less weight enables maximum performances both in terms of dynamic behaviour and safety. A lighter motorcycle will brake in a shorter distance, accelerate faster and be easier to steer. Every single component of the Multistrada 1200, therefore, has been designed to achieve weight reduction without compromising its load-bearing capacity. With a dry weight of just 189kg (417lb) the Multistrada 1200 is lighter than any other road enduro, touring or sport touring bike currently available. The light weight combined with an excellent chassis set-up ensures exceptional handling, a key factor for sports, touring, urban or enduro riding.

This weight saving is the result of applying new technologies to Ducati's design and engineering of all major components. Crankcases are now cast using Vacural® technology and frame components use welded Trellis tubes, cast alloy elements and hi-tech polymers. Further savings have also been made with the single-sided swingarm in aluminium and the fuel tank has been developed using blow moulding technology in pursuit of the best compromise between capacity and weight.

Furthermore, the layout of the exhaust system, which is simple and minimalistic, uses two primary manifolds flowing directly into the triple chamber single silencer. Apart from carrying out the 2-1-2 compensator function, the silencer also contains the catalyser and sound-absorbent materials. The two compact and lightweight aluminium alloy end pipes depart in a low, lateral configuration to keep the overall weight to a minimum.

ERGONOMICS AND COMFORT

The Multistrada 1200 has undergone an extensive ergonomic study using both CAD and repeated prototype testing, in order to guarantee a high level of comfort with a fully loaded bike for long-range touring.

The 'ergonomics triangle' of handlebar, seat and footpegs has been designed for both the rider and passenger, in order to optimise comfort while providing a commanding and upright riding position. The Multistrada 1200 feels spacious and seats two people in complete comfort, even with the top case and panniers in place. Underlining its multi-tasking intention, ergonomic attention was even applied when designing the riding position while standing on the footpegs, off-road style.

The wide, tapered steel handlebars have been designed for maximum comfort and ensure a commanding riding position enhanced by a generous steering lock of 76° (38° left and right). In addition, the handlebars have been mounted on anti-vibration isolators, specially designed to balance riding comfort with precise road 'feel'.

The Multistrada 1200 seat immediately transmits a sense of comfort. Constructed in two separate sections for the rider and passenger, they were designed with particular focus on form and cushion density to ensure maximum comfort during long journeys. A confidence-inspiring passenger grab-handle offers a secure and comfortable grip.

The footpeg position represents part of the optimum 'ergonomics triangle' for both the rider and passenger with added consideration to ground clearance during maximum lean angle and position of pannier luggage. The footpegs have rubber inserts that insulate vibration, removable to expose a motocross-style serrated edge that provides enhanced boot grip when riding off-road.

The Multistrada 1200's rear view mirrors have both vertical and horizontal adjustment and increased surface area to provide the most efficient visibility.

Two handy onboard stowage areas are built into the motorcycle, one suitable for mobile phones or toll road tickets situated in the right cockpit side panel and a larger 3 litre area situated under the passenger seat.
IDEAL FOR LONGER JOURNEYS

The Multistrada 1200's screen is designed with 60mm of vertical adjustment to ensure efficient wind protection for all rider heights and effortless high-speed riding over long distances.

The fuel tank has been developed using a new moulding technology which enables a favourable balance between capacity and weight. Subject to riding style, the 20 litre (5.3 gallon US) capacity provides more than 300km (186 miles) of riding pleasure between fuel stops.

Two 12V power outlets situated on either side of the area below the rider's seat can be used to power up to 3A (fused) accessories such as thermal apparel, intercoms or mobile phone chargers.

A special connection point for powering the GARMIN satellite navigator (optional feature) is situated near the instrumentation.
DESIGN: "Character" of the Multistrada 1200
EXHAUST: style and sound

For Ducati, design is not just creating an attractive look. It is about knowing how best to combine exciting appearance with intelligent function and outstanding performance. The Multistrada 1200's exhaust tail pipes are a feature that perfectly demonstrates this concept.

Their innovative design is well integrated with the motorcycle's overall shape and positioned so as to improve overall weight distribution. The tailpipes are short so they do not impinge on the space needed for the large panniers. The internal structure of the silencer is designed to achieve the characteristic Ducati sound without compromising compliance with sound and hydrocarbon emission standards (Euro3).

The frontal air intakes, which are carbon fibre on the 'S' Sport version, are not just a characteristic design aesthetic, but carry out the important function of acting as air flow conveyors, one to the oil coolers and the other to the airbox to feed the engine.

The single-sided rear swingarm is also a good example of Ducati's blend of design and functional engineering. It is made using a single piece casting, with fabricated and welded sections creating a strong, hollow and lightweight component that contributes considerably to the Multistrada's sure-footed handling.

The headlight is a characteristic feature of the face of the Multistrada 1200; its symmetrical layout uses four halogen lamps, two for low and two for high beam to provide excellent illumination. In addition, the front and rear side lights use LEDs, and feature a special shape of intense white light guidance, which both improves road illumination and makes the motorcycle more visible to other road users.
CHASSIS SET-UP: frame, brakes and suspension

All components used on the Multistrada 1200 are of the highest quality both in terms of design and build, and technical specification. Their selection and subsequent assembly is the result of a design brief based on uncompromised performance.

Chassis geometry, such as wheelbase, swingarm length, and rake, trail and offset is the result of a quest for the best balance of stability at high speeds and dynamic agility. The chassis is designed to achieve lean angles of up to 45° and the combination of reduced weight and generous steering lock of 76° (38° left and right) makes tight manoeuvres at low speeds very easy to manage.
FRAME

The Ducati signature Trellis frame uses large diameter, light gauge tubing with two central cast aluminium sections and a Trellis rear subframe. The frame has 19% more torsional rigidity than the Multistrada 1100.

The high pressure, die casted, magnesium front subframe reduces the high, frontal weight and contributes to chassis feel and control. Even if the front subframe is hidden below the fairing, it is precious and beautiful designed: why? Because we want our bikes to be beautiful inside as they are outside.
TYRES

Pirelli worked alongside Ducati as its technical partner throughout the project, developing the new Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres specifically for the Multistrada 1200. They represent the first dual compound tyre for on/off road use with the central section of the tyre a harder compound than the outer sections. Combined with a special tread design and carcass structure, their 190/55 section delivers racing performance on the road in terms of grip and lean angles, while ensuring high mileage for touring and good off-road performance. The new generation tyres are purposely designed for the four-bikes-in-one concept.
BRAKING SYSTEM

The front brakes use twin radially mounted Brembo four piston, two pad callipers actuated by a master cylinder with an adjustable lever. The front is fitted with 320mm discs, while a single 245mm disc on the rear is gripped by a single Brembo calliper. Typical of all Ducatis, these components ensure high performance braking and set the standard in this segment. The Multistrada 1200 is also equipped with a Bosch-Brembo ABS system, optional for the standard version and fitted as original equipment on the 'S' version. It delivers outstanding braking performance in all conditions and provides a major contribution towards performance safety. An option to disable the ABS is available via the instrumentation, but is automatically reactivated at the next ignition-on.
SUSPENSION

The standard version Multistrada 1200 uses 50mm Marzocchi front forks, featuring a special forged fork bottom and full adjustability in spring pre-load, rebound and compression damping. The rear is controlled by a Sachs monoshock adjustable in spring pre-load, and rebound and compression damping. Both front and rear have 170mm of travel, the extra-long movement providing excellent comfort even when fully loaded and even if the rider decides to leave the asphalt for an off-road route. The 'S' version features the Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES) system, developed in conjunction with Öhlins.
TECHNOLOGY

HANDS FREE

The Multistrada 1200 ignition is not actuated with a normal key. Instead, an electronic key in the rider's pocket communicates with the Multistrada within a distance of approximately 2 metres, recognising the dedicated key code and automatically enabling the ignition. Pressing the key-on switch then activates the motorcycle's electrics and the engine can then be started.

The electronic key, which consists internally of a circuit with two radio systems, externally doubles as a mechanical flip-key, required to open the seat and fuel tank cap. When parking the motorcycle an electric steering lock, which is actuated by pressing a button, is automatically disabled upon the next ignition-on.

ON-BOARD COMPUTER

The on-board computer system is made up of a large, high visibility LCD with the main data and a dot-matrix circular LCD which visualises various functions according to whether the bike is stationary or moving.

The main LCD displays speed, rpm, gear, total mileage, trip1/trip2, tyre pressures (as standard on the 'S' version Touring package), engine coolant temperature, fuel level and time.

When the motorcycle is in motion, the dot-matrix LCD displays the selected riding mode, remaining fuel/distance, current fuel consumption, average fuel consumption, average speed, air temperature, trip time, and 'freezing conditions' alarm. When stationary, it enters a setting menu from where adjustments to the various functions can be made.

The Sport, Touring, Urban or Enduro Riding Mode can be changed while either stationary or in motion, as well as the load settings for 'rider only', 'rider with luggage', 'rider and passenger' or 'rider and passenger with luggage'.

'S' VERSION

The main features of the 'S' version consist of the ABS system and the innovative Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES) system, developed specifically for the Multistrada 1200 by Öhlins in partnership with the Ducati engineers. The 'S' version is available in the two equipment options of Sport Edition and Touring Edition.
SPORT EDITION

The Sport Edition is enhanced with special carbon fibre components which further accentuate the distinctive character of the Multistrada 1200. They consist of front air intakes, cam belt covers, rear hugger and lateral air extractors.

TOURING EDITION
The Touring Edition focuses on comfort and convenience. A centre stand not only provides parking practicality, but is also essential in the event of tyre maintenance during a long distance journey. Easily connected heated grips are controlled via the instrument panel to three settings and are a must for any tour where adverse weather conditions threaten rider comfort.

Stylish luggage panniers, designed together with the bike, offer a load capacity of 57 litres (or 77 litres with large lid versions) and use a fast and secure attachment system that blends perfectly when the panniers are removed.
TAILOR-MADE ACCESSORIES

With its wide range of potential uses and benchmark performance, Ducati decided to manage the development of some key Multistrada 1200 accessories in cooperation with both the product development and the design departments. This integration right from the start of the project has optimised both style and performance.

Accessories such as the Garmin GPS system, a lower seat, panniers with capacity-increasing lids, a matching top case, an anti-theft alarm, electric filler cap, carbon fibre spray guards and front mudguard and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The current collection of accessories is in addition to those already included on the Sport and Touring Edition, which are also available individually. They include carbon fibre air intakes, cam belt covers, rear hugger and lateral air extractors, panniers, heated grips and centre stand.
Garmin GPS

The synergy between Ducati's experience in the world of motorcycling and that of Garmin, the leading producer of satellite navigation systems, has led to the creation of a navigation system which offers advanced performance and perfect integration with the Multistrada 1200. Its various customisation options include the addresses of the entire official Ducati dealer network in addition to the main MotoGP and World Superbike circuits, which are pre-loaded into the system. The Ducati navigation system has an anti-glare touch screen, 18 bit LCD display, a lithium battery which remains charged for up to 8 hours, and a microSD expandable memory. It includes a mounting kit and dedicated plug-and-play cables.

Low seat

The lowered seat reduces height by 25mm and provides sure-footed confidence when fully loaded.
Top case

With 48 litres of capacity, the top case is able to hold two full-face helmets. Combined with the side panniers it provides the ideal way to pack for long journeys, or when used on its own, ideal for the daily commute. It comes with a soft cushion to provide passenger comfort with a backrest and an integrated fixing system that makes it easy to attach. When removed, its support plate acts as a practical luggage rack.
Anti-theft alarm

Ducati has developed an integrated anti-theft system, including movement, anti-tamper and lifting sensors, as well as a sound alarm to act as a further deterrent.
Electric filler cap

Thanks to the hands-free system, the Multistrada 1200 can be started without the key leaving the rider's pocket. With the electric filler cap there is also no need to use the flip-key or remove gloves as it is opened simply by raising a tab and closed by pressing it down. At every power-down, the hands-free system allows 60 seconds for the electric filler cap to be opened.
Carbon fibre spray guards

From a protective part to a designer accessory – the carbon fibre spray guards on the rear wheel not only carry out their traditional function but also make the bike lighter and add enduro style details.
Carbon fibre front mudguard

The carbon fibre front mudguard with its criss-cross pattern enhances the aggressive beauty of the front end.

Tyre pressure monitoring system

As well as the ABS, DTC and ride-by-wire, Ducati offers an additional safety tool. The system is made up of two sensors inserted inside the special tyre valves which communicate via the radio system inside the hands-free electronic key. This real time communication displays temperature and pressure information on the instrument panel and signals any problems.

Anyone know anything about these??? My sister who is 16 is just about ready to try and buy her first car. She currently has $1500 and wants to get into something within the next month or so. We were looking online tonight at the frankly dismal collection of cheap cars for sale. She is of course looking for a sporty(ish) car... we only found two. A 95 Hyundai Scoupe and a 86 Pontiac Fiero. I of course am encouraging her to just start off with a cheap ugly beater she wont care about for at least a year... but of course she needs to have a cool car.

Now I know nothing about this car... but with a little research I see its a mid-engined RWD coupe. Sounds cool... sounds rare. Very rare actually. I've never actually seen one driving on the roads here and have only heard about them maybe twice a year. Regardless this car did show up, and it is in her price range, and we are going to go look at it at least.

I did call the owner and found its cheap because the clutch is broken... she said "it doesn't shift at all" and that the mechanic told her its either the slave cylinder or the master cylinder. I don't know much in the area of engine/drivetrain mechanics but knowing this is a rare, mid-engine sports car I can't imagine these parts are going to be easy to get to and replace. I've done some basic things with my car such as suspension parts replacement, brakes, drive belts and stuff but never dropping a trans and replacing a clutch or anything like that. So i'd have to find a shop in town who can do it. My concern is initial cost just to get this thing driving and then possible ongoing costs.

I've done a little snooping on carsurvey.org which I like because people get to list their experiences and thoughts about a car they have owned. In general it seems most people are happy with the car and it is fairly reliable. But that doesn't help the initial cost just to get this car running.

So does anyone here know anything about these cars? Anyone owned one? Any feedback at all would be appreciated. No need to give me the "not a good first car" speech. I already agree with that and already tried to relay that to her the best I could without sounding like a dick. Of course a mid-engine RWD car for a first time driver is probably not a good idea, two traits which are notorious for making a car challenging to control to the inexperienced. But if I teach her to drive the manual (which she will have to do since she doesn't know how yet) and get her into auto-x soon and a couple parking lot fun events I think I can get her to respect it and behave for the most part, and generally stay out of trouble. I like to start off by showing youtube videos of people crashing RWD cars trying to showing off... that should work right? :)

Oh I did look at the Hyundai but my knowledge of 90's Hyundai's tells me most are crap. I looked at reviews and it was about half-and-half. I recommended to avoid this generation of Korean cars. I myself owned a 06 Hyundai Tiburon/Coupe for 2 years and loved it before upgrading to my Z, but the newer Korean cars are a lot better in terms of reliability.

Anyhow... any info you guys have would be helpful.

so, long story short... I got pulled over for speeding, AGAIN!   This time is around the Pasadena area : (

Anyway, I'm fed up with this fucking policy of having like 1000+ police vehicles on the road, ready to catch ppl out for stupid mistakes, just so the government can squeeze more money out of us, cos pulling ppl over for speed is much safer than fighting crime. <_<

This got me thinking, what is the current Californian law about the usage of laser jammers/speed trap detectors/etc?? Are they effective against any random speed traps or they only work with the fixed cameras? Is it worth my time & money to have it installed, or am I just wasting my time?

Thanks in advance

I passed my driving test on Wednesday last week (also my 18th birthday). Last Friday I got in to a bit of a pickle with a car hitting me when I was turning left at an intersection. First of all I had to break in the middle of the intersection because a car was standing on the wrong side (that is my right and his left) of a bollard which I was to go past. He had driven the wrong way down a one-way street, leading up to his rather bad position.

Next think that happens is that a car hits me straight from the side. First I thought that it might have been my "fault", but when we checked how the traffic lights were working, I realised that the car that hit me had driven past a red light entering that same intersection.

Needless to say, that it probably wasn't my fault. That doesn't really help though. And it wasn't like I was driving as a loony either. I love driving fast, but due to the fact that I already have taken a racing license and raced a bit, there is no point of driving fast on the road, because it can't thrill anywhere near enough to get me going. Especially not at 7 PM in a rather tight city centre. Therefore a car on the roads is only a comfortable means of transportation.

No one got hurt or anything. My (well, my fathers) car is a write-off. It was just a Peugeot 205. Not his main car but just a fun cabrio for those summer days. Not expensive either. If I somehow should get all of the blame, it will cost about €500 and I'll keep my license so that part doesn't worry me either.

I've driven twice since the incident and for the first time driving doesn't feel just as comfortable or natural as it always has. And during the last couple of days the crash just goes over and over again in my head. How do you get past that? I mean, I shouldn't have ended up in that situation with just two days on my license.

To make matters worse, I had a bit of an incident today again. I was to turn left of a 90 km/h rural road on to a dirt track, where you don't see more than 200 meter ahead of you because of a crest. When just starting to turn the engine dies because of a bit of some problems with its idle. That led to all of the servos dying and I just managed to get it to a halt on a little dirt track on my right (turning left sharply enough was just too bloody heavy). That didn't help with my feeling about turning left either..

So well, what I'm asking really is.. how to get past these things? I've always loved but at the same time had a lot or respect for driving and I still do, on both counts. But it has never felt a bit scary, until now.

That's my tribute to all the japanese makers that in the end of the 80's to the 90's manufactured some of the best worldwide sports cars. They were all strangely stock limited to around 280 bhp (anyone knows exactly why?) and thanks in part to japanese videogames (Gran Turismo, of course;)) are now our generation heroes.
So here's my top 5 favourite ones:

1997 NSX Type S Zero: With an engine redesign from 3.0 to 3.2 litres and those BBS wheels are the definitive NSX versions (I don't really like the restyled versions) . Zero meant that it was a special lightened version. Sadly only available in Japan.

1999 Honda S2000 Type V (the European stock)
The great VTEC screaming at 9.000 without any roof means that is THE japanese Roadster.

1994 Mazda Roadster 1.8
Of course the little Miata :D It was launched in 1989 as an attempt to relaunch the little english roadster (MGBs, Sprites, TR6...) and they absolutely did it. In 1994 first appeared the 1.8L 131 BHP

2002 Mazda RX7 Spirit R
The last and rarest of all the last gen RX7. Launched in 1992, with a 1.3L bi-rotor wankel engine producing 276 BHP.

Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI Tommi Makinnen Edition.
With some very cool side stripes and some special mechanical features. It's for me the coolest Evo ever. As simple as this.

I found a car I'm interested in through a dealer's website, I also found they have the car on ebay as well. I looked through the ebay ad and found the give a vehicle history report. It shows a few renewals of the lease:

What I want to know is, is that normal for a leased car? Or am I right in thinking it looks a bit odd? I assumed if a car was leased under one person it would not have to be renewed for the term of the lease.

I finish uni in about 2 years and should have enough money in like about 4 years to buy an SL55 AMG from 2006 or so. 7 year old cars are going for the price of a new Ford Mondeo.

6 year old one is 26K http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IMMACULATE-200...item2ea8d1c3ea

So which cars do you think you could actually afford to buy in a few years. This is a bit different from us all hoping to buy some dream car 20 years in the future.

Washington State Van Found In Netherlands

Posted: 11:26 pm EST November 5, 2009Updated: 10:07 am EST November 6, 2009

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A Volkswagen van stolen 35 years ago in Washington state has been found in a shipping container at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport. Customs agents found the 1965 van on Oct. 19 when they opened a shipping container bound for The Netherlands, The Spokesman-Review newspaper reported. They ran the vehicle identification number and discovered it was listed as stolen.

Law officers said the van, which is in great shape, was stolen from an upholstery shop in Spokane on July 12, 1974 -- while Spokane was hosting the 1974 World's Fair. Authorities have not been able to find the original owner, whom they would not identify. The operators of a vehicle restoration business in Arizona were the latest to have possession of the van, which they refurbished and planned to sell overseas, said Michael Maleta, an investigator with the California Highway Patrol.

Maleta said the shop is also considered a victim in the case, and he declined to identify it. The van now legally belongs to Allstate Insurance Co., which paid off the original owner's theft claim back in 1974. The Highway Patrol turned over the van to Allstate this week.

Maleta said the van had been restored to pristine condition. "Now it's probably worth 27 grand," he said. "It's a beautiful van." Megan Brunet, a spokeswoman for Allstate, said the company is looking through old records trying to find the original policy and theft claim. "Trying to find paper files from that far back can be pretty challenging," she said. The company will likely have the van appraised and go through the process of getting a replacement title before selling it at auction, she said.
