Weird photoshop behaviour when converting from Adobe RGB to sRGB

This regards Photoshop, but since you won't encounter colour profiles almost anywhere else, I put it in this section.

I found a weird thing happening when I save pics, especially now that I've had the screen calibrated. I load an image from the cam via ACR in 16 bit adobe RGB, so if I want to save it as a jpeg for web, I have to convert to 8 bit and sRGB. If I do this in photoshop normally, then do a Save As, I get this:

But if I keep it in 16 bit Adobe RGB inside photoshop and head straight for Save for Web and Devices, i get this:

Which is what the image is supposed to look like. I've tried all the different conversion engines and intents, but apart from very very minor differences, the in-photoshop conversion just doesn't do it correctly.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what might be going on? :S

And I know you've seen this pic already, but it captures the difference perfectly, as it has a lot of blues and greens. Also, 'tis pretty. :)

Davos to Stelvio

Hi folks

Last year (after watching Top Gear of course) a friend of mine and I decided to drive to the Stelvio and see what's what. Since we live in Central Switzerland the Stelvio pass isn't that far away. We started from Lucerne on the Autobahn to Davos, over the Flüelapass to Susch, then to Zernez, over the Ofenpass into Italy. Then we took the famous SS38 over the Stelvio but we didn't drove down to Bormio. We took the road to Switzerland instead and over St. Moritz back home again. It was about 630 km and we sat in the car for almost 10 hours!
Here are some pictures. My friend took them, I think they look good although I know absolutely nothing about photography.

Ok, you probably have discussed this issue earlier. I need new camera and I don`t know which one will be better. I know the good and bad things about both, I`m not a freak about camera but I want to hear your oppinion.

FinalGear Photo Assignment #22 - "MANUALEMBER"

What? You say you don't know what a Manualember is? Well, I'll tell you!

For the months of November and December, the assignment is open. Any topic, any subject, your call. The catch is that photos submitted for the contest must have been taken in FULL MANUAL mode. That's right, the thingy on the dial labeled M! The manualish modes P,A, and S don't count. And, to make things harder, manual focus is also required. And I WILL be checking EXIF.

In the interests of fairness and not excluding anyone, if your camera lacks manual controls, this is pretty much just an open topic for you and I will not exclude your entries.

Timeframe: Your entry must be emailed to finalgearphoto@gmail.com on or before midnight Mountain Time, December 31st, 2009.
Prize: Bragging rights, and a position in the Winners' Gallery!

Restrictions: Please follow the following restrictions in order to submit an eligible entry.

- Your image must be a maximum of 1000 pixels (height or width), and a minimum of 500 pixels (height or width).
- Your submission email should have the title of the image and "Contest #22" in the subject. Please title your images, as the poll must have some way to distinguish between them - I don't want half the vote options to be "Untitled."
- Also, when you email your submission, make sure you include your FinalGear screen name so I know who's submitting what!
- Only one submission per user. Please do not create multiple accounts to submit more images, as it is 1) unethical, and 2) statistically reduces your chance of winning anyway.
- Your image must NOT contain any borders or signatures or anything to identify the photo as your own. The images will be stripped of EXIF data as to make the vote 100% anonymous. Please do not mention which photo is yours, and please do not post that image anywhere until the contest is over.
- Your image must have been taken after the contest has started, I will not accept old photos that happen to match the subject. This contest is designed to promote creativity, not find out who has the biggest backlog of good photos.
- Your image may be altered in whatever imaging software you choose, without actually altering the content of the photograph. (i.e. you can alter the curves as much as you want, but you can't paste in David Hasselhoff.) Editing out distracting non-content objects such as power lines is also acceptable.
- Please keep the submissions tasteful and without gore/nudity. I like nude photography as much as the next guy, but this is a public forum. Don't submit anything you wouldn't put up in a public area.

The "critique my shot" thread

Well i've been thinking for a long time if I should or not make this thread and now I'm bringing it out. Some of us might want a bit more than just posting their shots in the lens flair thread so now's the new way. It's just like lens thread so 1 shot/day/person but unlike lens flair you have to also post your exif data on you shot and ask what kind of critique would you like to recieve on your photo (lighting, background, composition, etc). You can also just ask the other guys what's wrong/right if you're not sure witch area you want to know about. So one guy posts a photo and the next man to post in the thread must critique the shot above. Only after a photo has recieved minimum 1 critique can another guy post another photo.
So, I'm first with this

I decided to see just how much difference ISO makes in terms of quality and to find the highest "useable" ISO (I'm not that big of a geek, this is just better than writing papers). Thought I'd share. All shots are cropped to 100%. Here are the results:

200 was decent; 400 useable but certainly noisy; 800 and 1600 were terrible and even more terrible, respectively.

Someone on this forum (don't remember who, sorry) suggested a program called NoiseNinja once. I've been using it and I've been satisfied with the results so I thought I'd try it for this little comparo and see just how good it is. NoiseNinja'd edits:

ISO 100 - pretty much no difference

ISO 200 - definitely better quality

ISO 400 - less noise than original shot at 200

ISO 800 - big improvement over the original; a bit more noise than original at 200 (NoiseNinja sharpens shots a little too, so the Queso can looks much better in this Ninja'd shot at 800 than it does in the original at 200; however the dark background is clearly noiser in this 800 than the orig 200)

ISO 1600 - again, big improvement over the original; not as good as orig at 400; a little better than orig at 800

Then I ran the Ninja'd 1600 shot through once more. The noise particles are a lot smaller than in the original shots and detail is lost.

Conclusions? ISO 200 is the highest I'd want to go; anything higher produces a lot of noise. When using NoiseNinja, ISO 800 becomes useable; Ninja'd 1600 shots lose a lot detail, while at 800 details are retained.

Thus, up to ISO 200 is good straight out of the camera; up to ISO 800 is good if you use NoiseNinja; ISO 1600 is good only if you absolutely have to use it.

Notes: Canon Digital Rebel XT; 18-55mm IS; f/5.6, aperture priority; all shots at 55mm from a tripod positioned about 4 feet away from the Queso can, using a remote; once it focused the first time, I switched it to MF. This was done at about 8:30pm; the room was lit only with an overhead flourescent light; white balance was left on auto.
