Car: 1998 Subaru Legacy 2.5L Rep Power: 39 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | [10x02] 2006.10.02 Five’s motoring show Fifth Gear is back for a tenth series, with a revamped format from the Ace Café in London and two exciting new additions to the presenting team. Soccer AM’s Tim Lovejoy joins existing host Vicki Butler-Henderson. This series also features new presenter Jonny Smith and sees the return of old favourites Tiff Needell, Jason Plato and Tom Ford. In this second episode, Vicki teaches England cricket team captain Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff how to race a Porsche. After first letting him loose round a circuit in his company car, Vicki schools him in the art of driving fast in the brand new Porsche Cayman. He returns the favour by giving her a few tips to improve her batting… Tom tests the most expensive four-seat cabriolet in the world, the new £220,000 Bentley Azure. To help find out whether this is a vulgar display of wealth or a grand testament to British craftsmanship, he employs the services of an unusual chauffeur – restaurant critic and film director Michael Winner. The last time Michael drove was when he fired his chauffeur in the middle of Hyde Park. New presenter Jonny Smith is on a mission – to drive across Britain using nothing but chip fat as fuel. Apparently, it’s a perfect substitute for diesel, and because it’s a waste product of the catering industry there’s no fuel duty to pay to the Treasury. Jonny fills the tank of his old Mercedes 250d with chip fat and embarks on a historic journey – coast to coast for free. Nobody likes traffic wardens, but to get both sides of the story Fifth Gear’s producers made Tim become a parking attendant for the day. He finds out from his new colleagues whether wardens are the model of discretion and fair-minded or overzealous enforcers drunk with power. He encounters an irate motorist and we genuinely fear for Tim’s safety… Also this week, Tiff tests the latest hot hatch, the Renault Clio 197, against the greatest-ever hot hatch, the 15-year-old Renault Clio Williams. Which will be quicker round a track? The result may surprise you... Looks pretty good to me. I think these new co-hosts might be of good to the show ![]() |

There is no replacement for displacement. - Wolfgang Bernhard, Chief Operating Officer, Chrysler Group talking about the Dodge Viper SRT-10 ... I ask Herb Helbig, vehicle synthesis manager for SRT and a member of the original Team Viper development group since day one, if they'd ever thought of adding traction control. "It comes with two," he says, pointing at my feet. "Learn to use them." Got it. - Motor Trend on the 2006 Dodge Viper Coupe, November 2005 |
