Default The on-road review part of the show

Surely reviewing a car while driving it on a public road is as distracting as using a mobile?

Its their job, and other people talk while they are driving all the time. It would be very strange to drive in complete silence. I kind of agree that driving while using your mobile is distracting partly because you always have to look at the screen at some point and partly because you have to concentrate a lot more on a phone call than an average conversation. But whether or not that is enough to make it illegal is another question.

Actually I noticed just this last episode that they weave across lanes without indicating. They could at least follow the road rules if they're going to test on public roads.

Would you rather they put a disclaimer at the bottom? "Do not try. Professional driver on a closed road."

Its a tv show. Get over it.

Clarkson has stated on occasion that their road tests are always on open public roads, because they "haven't got the power to go around closing roads for our own self-gratification".

As for the original question, I don't think it's that distracting. Besides, don't underestimate the power of video editing. Their ramblings on camera are probably more staged than it seems.

They use the section of the Circular between Hangar Lane Gyratory System and Staples Corner. You'll also notice an MPV / estate car driving with its tail gate up!

Hmm, someone better notify the local constabulatory on them. My god, to think they allow those menaces on public roads...
