It's always better to have too much information that gets scaled down, than too little information that gets scaled up.

When you take a 1920x1080 image and scale it to 1680x1050, you're losing pixels. When you take a 1280x720 image and scale it to 1680x1050, you're making up information that isn't there.

A couple of questions...

1) Does anyone have some production tech info like what cameras were used? I'm assuming XDCAM-HD which is MPEG2 based and records to disc (similar to Blu-Ray) at bitrates up to 35Mbps at 1440x1080. That was probably the best choice given the extreme conditions.

2) Anyone tried playback on either a Xbox 360 or PS3? They should have enough horsepower.

any chance of the 720p vid? I seem to have trouble with 1080 stuff (which i dont think i should - AMD 3700@3 GHz, 7950GT + PureVideo stuff), and it would be overkill for my 1680*1050 monitor anyway.

Does anyone know if the provided torrents can stream to an XBox 360 using its built in solution? I'm sure TVersity can decode it on the fly, but that would probably be just as intensive as watching it on the Host PC.

I'm currently at 70% so unless anyone can test before I can, I'll let you know if crappy computer streaming to a 360 can play this successfully.

I'm not an expert on this topic, but I think when using MBAFF the encoder decides for each macroblock (16x16) if it uses progressive or interlaced encoding. Since TG most likely was filmed progressive the whole image is made from progressive blocks. Its still being broadcasted as Interlaced material (50fields/second), but the decoder can just skip deinterlacing on the blocks and therefore you get a result identical to progressive broadcasting.

All those with playback problems: Go and try coreavc... While some encodes don't look as topnotch as they do with ffdshow, its mighty fast. I usually have 35-45% cpu usage when watching 1080p (and this is a bit less, as has been established in the recent posts) on an unoced C2D 6300...

@civchuck: Dig around here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/production/hd.shtml its the production guidellines, maybe you'll find your answers...

Hi I've got the same problem with the usenet release. I'm still downloading the torrent to see if it will be ok because my computer has the power to read it easly. I will also try to demux the ts file myself...

A properly set-up Athlon 64 or Athlon 64 X2 will run HD just fine, equivalent Intel chip should run it just as easily. All you really need is CoreAVC to get it working.

My rig is using an A64 X2 4400+ with 2gb RAM running CoreAVC, Haali Media Splitter and WMP 11, I got about 30% CPU usage on average. Only problem I had was that WMP 11 didn't close itself properly at the end.

I'm trying to play the file and I get this (it doesnt go any further. 'Opening' is all I get):

http://www.phyrefile.com/pic/2007/07/27/polar1080.JPG

I got all the right codecs (non-pro coreavc 1.2, but that should work?) and I think my hardware is sufficient. 1080p blu-rays plays like a dream so I cant see how a normal 1080p mkv shouldnt work..

Got: Intel P D840 (3.2ghz), 2GB ram, geforce 7800gtx..

Hello, I finally got the usenet release to work and surprisingly it only works with ... Windows Media PLayer images/smilies/smile.gif I'm still amazed by the quality it's like those demo clips you see in shops.
I'm also amazed by the lack of software to read this kind of files (h264 HD). When reading Top Gear it uses just a bit over the half of the processor capacity and mine is not so new (Pentium D940). So I hope in the future we'll see more software to be able to have more HD clips in this quality. Maybe VLC will do it soon
By the way how do you read your BluRay downloads? I downloaded only The Island in BluRay but I can only read in power dvd ultra.

I can play 720p with about 30~50% CPU usage on my system. 1080p I wouldn't bother with since I don't have a screen capable but 1080i is impossible to watch anyways, so many frames dropped.

Running:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
3GB RAM
Nvidia 6800GT
MPC w/CoreAVC || VLC

That .ts file from the newsgroups wouldn't play very well on my AMD Athlon 64 desktop, but my Core Duo laptop played it fine.

My desktop has had no problems playing 720p or 1080p H.264, .mkv files though, hm.

Yeah, it's strange. I just tried to play a 720p WMV-HD file and my desktop couldn't handle it though MKVs playback just fine. I think I need an upgrade.

Just another excuse for an upgrade right?
