And you can limit the cpu usage to what ever u want. It only uses spare cpu cycles, thus if any other process on your computer needs some it'll stop untill your computer is doing nothing again.

I will join up as well if you all decide to make another group, I have about 5 - 8 (fairly fast) machines at my disposal to help out. I used to do a LOT of folding for another team, and have since kind of slacked off. I would rather join a team with a fairly active forum, than the one I am/was in before.

just ripped from the folding@home frontpage:
Quote:
Our goal: to understand protein folding, protein aggregation, and related diseases

What are proteins and why do they "fold"? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

How can you help? You can help our project by downloading and running our client software. Our algorithms are designed such that for every computer that joins the project, we get a commensurate increase in simulation speed.
and about the CPU-load: you absolutely wont notice, it has lowest priority, so every move you make has a higher priority so that goes first.
im running it as a service, since it runs faster (otherwise some cpu-cycles would be wasted by generating nice (but useless) images.).
Normally the client uses about 30MB RAM, but you can allow the program to use more memory, if you do that it will use 100-110MB. (which i do on all my pc's, but i wouldnt recommend that for workstations with 256MB RAM or less.).

Yeah, the idea is to make use of the rest of your processor. You rarely use 100% of your CPU, so thise DC programs use the rest of your processor for a good purpose.

They set (or should) set themselves with a "Idle" priority though so that that way any other program has priority over it and can take back the CPU power if need be.

You should never really notice that it's even open.

It sounds worthwhile, if we set up a group I'm game - I could probably just add it to my sisters' laptops etc. and get about 10gigs of processing power. images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

If you have the Google Toolbar, Folding@Home is built in. You just gotta turn it on: http://toolbar.google.com/dc/aboutdc.html

And I made a team. I'll be joining it in a moment.

The team ID is 42134.

images/smilies/lol.gif No problems. I'm having my own issues as I have Hyperthreading which means I have to run the console client with the -local tag. Problem is I can't seem to edit the Windows service to have the -local tag. I started both copies of my console clients without the -local tag and even though I used different client IDs, they worked on the same WU I think:
