What do you think you guys...
I'm talking to the following ... hokiethang gtrietsc VolvoPV544 Cyfun I'm the one missing from the list (imillman) of contributors to the Finalgear F@H team. What should we do ? Try to relaunch finalgear as a folding team trying to get all the GPU's onboard... Relaunch finalgear into a different distibuted computing site... Carry on as is... or give up and join another team... We've been consistently at 800 or so for a while now, but we are starting to slip. I guess other teams are getting more GPU's online. I think it's a shame, Finalgear could be up there with the best of them, we have a young, computer savvy userbase with a lot of gaming rigs in there. Only an hour a day could do a big work unit every 3 days and people wouldn't even notice if all they were doing was browsing the internet. anyway... Anyone... hello, Anyone out there ? |

I'd be willing to chip in as well, I have a pretty powerful computer that only gets used a few hours a day.
How much bandwidth does this consume, though? With my downloading habits, I don't have much monthly gigs to spare. |

While it's working, there is no bandwith used (as far as I understand).
In the advanced tab you can select whether to accept work units over 10Mb in size, but these would take about 3 hours on a powerful GPU to complete... So... 10Mb x 8 work units per day = 240 Mb per day flat out. This is assuming that it is on all the time, my PC is usually on about 3 hours a day so the bandwidth consumed is about 10Mb a day. saying that my bandwidth is uncapped so I'm not too bothered. Anyway, if you decide to join in, welcome aboard... |

My PS3 is probably on chugging away at it for an average of 12 hours a day. Sometimes a lot longer, I just dont like to run it while I am actually gaming with my 360, as it angers my UPS.

Most people wouldn't even notice the F@H client if it was on while they were browsing the internet and there are some powerful PCs and PS3s out there. So what do you think we should do ? P.S. according to extremeoverclocking.com I should overtake you in about 1.5 years

I don't bother anymore personally as it costs real money (power) and it doesn't properly use less CPU when I'm gaming and such. I also don't want to leave my PS3 on all the time.

If my X1950 was still supported I would fold on that. But I guess I could get my crappy Sempron 3100 folding again. It probably won't help the team much though, as the people with Nvidia cards gets 3-4k points a day.

I'm still running my PS3 and my eight core server folding. I leave the PS3 running all the time, and i've got the server that's running anyway. I'll throw my core 2 quad server and core 2 duo workstation (with an 8800 GTX) into the fray, and we'll see if we can make that number go a little higher, faster.
I have a lot of points on this team already (880k, 31 days from 1 million). I'd almost say if we could get some more publicity on the main site to get others to join.

Yea, I wont be catching you anytime soon. Just my work laptop (C2D at least) running the client besides my PS3. The power cost doesnt bother me so much for this because over a year, it isnt a significant expense compared to all the other power I use. Plus, if by some chance my PS3 cures cancer, well, that would totally be worth it. ![]() In fact, my PS3 spends more time folding proteins than watching BluRayz easily. And I never game on the thing. Thats what my 360 is for. |

Well after over a week, This thread's had 177 views but only recruited 2 more folders.
I still think it's a worthwhile thing to do, even if it does cost "real money". After all they do say on the site that you will be DONATING your spare CPU cycles. But as GTRIETSC says above... "if by some chance my PS3 cures cancer, well, that would totally be worth it. " So, as I said in the 1st post on this thread, what should we do ? Anyone volunteer to write a post in the Tech or off topic section ? |

With my farm of machines, we're pulling up the ranks (we've jumped up +10 in the last 7 days, and should get another 2 or 3 in the next couple of days). As for the topic in Off Topic, go ahead and make one, just link back to this forum so we can get some traffic in here.

Hmm, we should get Titan and/or Jaguar to fold.
