Just joined the team. I've been folding for another team for quite a while but I just switched. Is there a big difference between the normal client and the High Performance ones? Like the multi-core and GPU clients? I'm considering those because I'm running a Q9450 (@ 3,2GHz) and a HD4870 GPU, which would do quite good I think.

Go for the GPU Client, though you may want to talk to awdrifter (^^^^) 1st to ask his opinion.

I fold on an Nvidia 8800 so I have no Idea on how well the ATI GPU works, but the GPU clients get far more Points per day.

Edit.

Both Devil500 and Breznikov have appeared on Extreme Folding

I'm just not comfortable running my brand new 4850 constantly at 75+ C that's all. There are some people who ran their 2900XT/Pro with F@H and had their card died prematurely. You'll get 1.5-2k PPD with the 4870 I believe.

Yes, the GPU client is like 10x as fast or something as the CPU client. It's the way to go. My 8800 GT is folding whenever I'm not gaming and it works through the small WU's in 2-3 hours and the large ones in like 3-5 I think.

My GPU sits at 64C all day long which I don't think is that hot, so I'm not worried. the card will be become obsolete long before I wear it out I think.

Yeah and I'm not worried because my card has a life time guarantee from visiontek so I'm fine plus 4870's just went to $200 a pop on newegg

Mine runs at 71 degrees now. For a GPU that's not very hot, those things can handle temperatures of around 100 degrees. I should cool my case a bit more, but I'm not that worried about 71 degrees so I'm not going to rush cooling it.

By the way: Last night the GPU client folded 5.000 of 10.000 and was working at about 1000 iterations a second (or whatever it's called). This morning it started the whole unit over at zero and is currently folding at 250 iterations a second. Any ideas what could have caused the reset and why it's running so slow now?

It's probably because the protein you got this time is bigger, that's why it's running slower.

The WU from last night might have timed out, the GPU WUs only last about 3 days.

Then what awdrifter said, it downloaded another bigger one.

Well, the problem is everytime I start the client it starts all over again. I just folded 7000/10000, turned it off because I wanted to play a game, then afterwards switched it back on and it started again with 0/10000. Very strange. I won't complete much WU's like this

Have you set the checkpointing frequency properly?

I guess I have to set that to the maximum (30 minutes)? I just did, I think that was the problem. Thanks

No no. Checkpoint frequency should be about 3 minutes, so that it saves the progress as often as possible. At least the CPU client does it every 3 minutes at most. Don't know about the GPU or PS clients.

GPU client minimum is also 3 minutes. I misunderstood the meaning of that checkpoint, I put it at 3 minutes now at the GPU and CPU clients. Hope it works.
