Kobayashi to race for Toyota in Abu Dhabi

Toyota have confirmed on Tuesday that their third driver Kamui Kobayashi will race again for the Japanese team at this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Kobayashi made his debut in Brazil earlier this month, after being drafted in to replace Timo Glock, who had suffered a cracked vertebra and cut leg in an accident during qualifying for the Japanese race.

Although Toyota had been optimistic that Glock would be well enough to compete at the Yas Marina season finale, the Japanese team have decided not to risk an early return to racing for the German and have instead opted to allow Kobayashi to race for a second time.

"We feel genuinely sorry for Timo that his season, which has included two impressive podium finishes, is ending in this way,” explained Toyota team president John Howett. “Having discussed the medical advice with Timo and his management, the team has decided to take no risk and to put Kamui in the car. Kamui performed well in Brazil in difficult circumstances so we are happy to ask him to once again deputise."

Twenty three year-old Kobayashi enjoyed a spirited maiden race appearance at Interlagos, qualifying in 11th and finishing in ninth.

There's only one remotely interesting corner in the whole track, and that's the Turns 2/3 complex. OK, that's technically two corners, but still. After Valencia, people have completely lost their faith in new circuits.

What an excuse. They just want Kobayashi to race again instead of Glock so they can rally the Japanese board members

Japanese team just want Japanese driver. Last year, when I was in Japan Kobayashi was presented in Toyota's showroom on an equal footing with Trulli and Glock, even if he was only test driver who didn't do much. So yes, Toyota needs good publicity on Japanese market during financial crisis so they need Kobayashi on the track.

And since Nakajima looses his place at Williams Toyota probably will have to give seat to Kobayashi next year so they're giving him opportunity now to gain some race experience in F1 car.

Aint gonna happen with Kimi on that front. All of the budget will go to Kimi's pocket, leaving Toyota to field tricycles for the race.

Can't believe some of the people saying they are thinking of not watching this Grand Prix.

There hasn't been a GP yet and already judging it.

I love F1 and would watch a race if it was in a shopping centre car park.

But then again, yesterday someone took a day off work just to get away from me (long story).

EDIT: Also, you're usage of the past tense confuses me. Today is Wednesday right?

I guess you'll love this circuit then... images/smilies/tongue.gif

I'm sure we're all keen F1 fans, but there's a lot of us that are just bored shitless with these dull, featureless 'modern' circuits. I get excited before watching a race at Spa, Suzuka, Silverstone, or Monza - I don't get anything like that same buzz before Valencia, nor am I getting it before this GP.

Past tense because I usually work Fridays but agreed not to with my boss because I want to watch F1.
I'm surprised so many of you aren't looking forward to this. Theres a cool pit lane exit, long straight and a chance Lewis might win here )) And I like red button commentaries.
