Kimi's figure was a big lump deal, that was made on speculation. Ferrari probably thought well worth it winning both championships in 2007 on the first try. Also Kimi has had a lot of good sponsorship deals as well. So he def makes good money.
As for the rest, its a bit of their fault in the negotiation departments. You get what people are willing to pay OR what you want. Aside from the basic salaries though, I'm sure they also worked out a lot of other things that eventually balance people out. ie: rubens, less pay - just to race last year. A lot of the drivers just want to drive, thats reward enough. Those who make no money are probably bringing sponsorship to the team/ paying for the drive (nakajima/toyota) This is probably why kimis decision is so in doubt right now. Hes wondering if the drive is still exciting enough to motivate him w/o all that money. Rallying with less money is new and exciting, but F1 will give him at least a few million. Retirement with all his money, and just chillin sounds good too!

Just a quick thought, I don't think many other drivers would actually want Kimi to take a substantial pay cut. He probably should, and probably will, but I can see many other teams coming out with "Well, look Kimi took a $10million pay cut, I don't think we can offer much money".
One other thing, I mentioned in my 2009 Summary that Brawn probably got the bargain of the year with Rubens but fuck, I didn't think it would be THAT much of a bargain!! If he keeps signing for that amount he might have to sell his private jet!

Well, Honda didn't even want to retain him at the end of last season so I think Rubens was just happy to keep his drive and didn't have much say in salary issues.

this is interesting, because he makes it sound like kimi's management is in control of the negotiation, implying the driver only chooses to accept or not accept. Kimi has already made it clear McLaren is the only option, and he'd like the seat- Why can't he work out a reasonable price? and bAM - we are all relieved. There is no way anyone would want to pay the 25 mil, he should be asking 9.5 -10m. 12m tops.

I don't think Ross Brawn meant to implicate that. His partner in the negotiations is the management, of course. If he would be to talk to the driver, no management would be needed. Additionally, any price Kimi could ask would be more than Rubens got this year, so we got to keep this in perspective.

For me it was something Martin Brundle said on BBC F1 Forum that made me think about Kimi's situation which went along the lines of "You never get tired of racing, what wears you down the the travel, press conferences and sponsorship events". We all know that Kimi has never been a fan of anything about F1 apart from racing every other Sunday, his agents will be trying to get the best deal for themselves/him as close to the Ferrari contract as they can get, for me if Kimi wasn't to stay in F1, rallying would be perfect for him, you go racing for the weekend and have a lot less involvement with the press and sponsorship (even thou Kimi could probably afford to run his own car without sponsorship).
I would like him to stay in the sport but for me it just doesn't seem to be a major priority to be racing in F1, as long as he is in a racing series where he can win he would be happy.

No, he wants to be winning in the top racing series, and that is formula 1 and wrc.

Well supposedly Ferrari will pay him $20 million to not race in F1 next year for another team, so I can understand why he is not interested in taking what would amount to "half pay" to stay in F1, especially if his heart really isn't in it.

Because 24 hours ago nick heidfeld was out of a job and robert kubica was looking at a stable, safe drive with a team that had recently re-affirmed its commitment to formula one.

What makes you think Nick is in a better position? If Renault bails out Kubica profits because he has already signed a contract, and just look for a new drive.

Renault hasn't pulled out yet.

They broke that contract so the FIA is going to court with them. So the same logic applies with Kubica, and anybody else. If Renault pulls out Kubica is payed damages, and once again on the market.

I am comfortable calling the new lotus "Lotus", they paid for the rights to use the name so they should go right ahead and do it.
Its not like a ferrari f1 car and a renault f1 car are all that differant anyway. if we were still in the age of v8 vs v12, turbo vs NA maybe i would complain, but they earned the right to put lotus stickers on their car in my opinion. Zombie Ayrton Senna can kiss my american ass.
