I think piquet shouldnt have a problem signing onto one of the new teams (campos or something), he is one of the cheapest drivers you can get and is actually decently experienced. I think he is a safer bet than picking up a GP2 driver, is probibly just as cheap, and could do fairly well if he didnt have his whole team mocking him and trying to fuck him over.

Manager says Kubica now on the market

By Michele Lostia and Pablo Elizalde Thursday, July 30th 2009, 11:43 GMT

Robert KubicaRobert Kubica's manager says the Polish driver is now officially on the market following the announcement of BMW's exit from Formula 1.

The German company said on Wednesday it will leave the sport at the end of the 2009 season, a shock decision that caught Formula 1 by surprise.

BMW said it is yet to decide on what it will do with the team and its staff.

Kubica, who has been with the team since the 2006 season, had a contract with BMW until the end of 2010, but the team's exit has left the Pole's future in an uncertain position.

However, his manager Daniele Morelli made it clear that Kubica is now open to offers.

"There was no sign inside the team that something like this could happen. We take note of it," Morelli told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Robert was under contract until the end of 2010, but now he's officially on the market."

I just hope Kubica doesn't go to McLaren.

Is there a chance of BMW selling the team, especially the Sauber name? Maybe one of the teams that wanted a spot on the grid next year will have a more realistic chance if they can acquire BMWs infrastructure. (Especially that wind tunnel, supposedly the best in the world) I wouldn't be shocked to see that happen. I think Kubica will either take a #1 driver spot in a un-competitive new team, or the #2 spot at Mclaren. Heidfeld shouldn't have trouble finding work either.

Actually, for the sake of seeing my Polish friend who is a huge Ferrari fan have a heart attack and freak out, I hope he does.

In all seriousness, I think Kovalainen can kiss his seat goodbye. Doing a very rough checklist, assuming both Heidfeld and Kubica don't stay with a "new" Sauber, the new list looks like:

Drivers with contracts or team ending at seasons end:

Heikki Kovalainen (could be sooner?)
Robert Kubica (WRC? McLaren? Renault? Ferrari?)
Nick Heidfeld (McLaren?)
Nelson Piquet (if not already canned, but who knows)
Sebastien Buemi (expect to re-sign)
Jaime Alguersuari (right? I don't think he is signed for next year. Expect to re-sign)
Nico Rosberg (McLaren?)
Kazuki Nakajima (a seat at all? Probably won't be back with Williams.)
Adrian Sutil (McLaren?)
Giancarlo Fisichella (retirement? Probably won't be back with Force India)
Rubens Barrichello (retirement? Probably won't be back with Brawn GP)

Seats open:
McLaren x1
Renault x1
Toro Rosso x2
Williams x2
Force India x2
Brawn GP x1
USF1 x2
Dallara-Campos x2
Manor F1 x2
***BMW Sauber replacement x2 (if it happens)

Drivers signed through next season:
Lewis Hamilton - McLaren (He ain't leaving)
Felipe Massa - Ferrari (Health will be an issue)
Kimi Raikkonen - Ferrari (Will he go to rallying or another team?)
Fernando Alonso - Renault (More rumors than Michael Jackson)
Jarno Trulli - Toyota (Assuming Toyota doesn't leave)
Timo Glock - Toyota (Ditto. I don't see him at McLaren)
Mark Webber - Red Bull Racing (just signed extention)
Sebastien Vettel - RBR (He ain't leaving, despite the stupid Ferrari rumors)
Jenson Button - Brawn GP (He ain't leaving)

Things to note:

If Piquet is replaced by Romain Grosjean, he could be signed through 2010 and therefor closing one more seat.

It seems like STR wants Buemi and probably Jaime back. Unless either go to greener pastures, expect them to resign.

McLaren will probably go German to make Mercedes happy for theeir second seat. Exception being if they can land Kubica, which would also make Mercedes happy.

Williams will probably fill one of their seats with Nico Hulkenberg.

Only 9 drivers are signed next year, and only 3 (Hamilton, Button and Webber) are rumor free. There is going to be some huge turnover compared to last year, in which only 2 seats between 3 drivers changed (Vettel STR -> RBR, Buemi rookie -> STR, David Coulthard RBR -> BBC)

Rumors are still surrounding Renault and Toyota with 2010. Renault especially after the recent suspension. Don't be surprised if the net gain of 6 seats quickly turns into 2 or even none.

This list doesn't include non-F1 drivers or F1 test drivers. Being in the states you hear nothing about them (hard enough finding F1 news here in the first place).

Thoughts?

^ Why do you expect Buemi and Alguersuari to resign?

They're both rookies, and if STR wants them (and it's unlikely anyone else does) then why would they leave?

He meant resign as in "re-sign", which means sign a continuation of their contracts.

Jeebus. This is going to be the silliest silly season in quite some time. All these speculations are already just about doing my head in. I'd love to see Fernando at Ferrari, whom I'm a fan of...but not at the expense of Kimi, whom I'm also a fan of...and not at the expense of Massa whom I respect immensely (even before his accident). I'd like him to stay at Renault then..but, they're on shaky ground. Christ it's tricky!

At least my fave team and its drivers are sorted out.

All I mean by that is that a Hamilton/Kubica pairing looks very nice on paper. If they can't land a German driver (of which all but one are f/a's), it's not that horrific of a backup plan

Neither do I. According to the graffiti on the bathroom stall at McLaren (a very reliable source), Mercedes would really like a German driver. Now, with Vettel out of the picture, who does that leave? Rosberg I personally believe is someone who just needs a better car. Same with Sutil, but he'll either end up back at FI, with Williams, or with a new team. Heidfeld will probably end up with a new team as he is a steady driver with experience, but not someone you expect to win the title. Glock could go to McLaren, but I just don't see him leaving if the decision is up to him.

Of course, there's that new guy for Ferrari, Michael something. Supposedly he's alright, but I don't see McLaren getting him. I don't know why that is, just a gut feeling.

All above my very useless .02 and may contain sarcasm.
