Default Are you a car person?

Simple poll, just to gauge if the FinalGear crowd think of themselves as car people or not. I've got the feeling that alot are not real car people, but we'll see I suppose.

I am.

Hm, no selection for "I'm a motorcycle person first, a car person second."

No, it's general. You can lump motorcycle/truck into the car category. I don't care about the distinction, if you like think of "car" as "automotive."

Depends what you call a "real" car person, obviously there are certain aspects of things I couldn't really give a shit about.

I'm sure my idea of a "real" car person is quite different from a good bit of people on here. But I'm asking do YOU consider YOURSELF as a real car person, not by my standards, but by YOURS.

I'm more into motorsport than just cars... but I guess that's a yes from me!

There are two branches to this:

1. the influx of *new* Top Gear fans who like the show but have only a mild/passing/next to zero interest in cars, models, how they work, etc., and never claim to have any real interest in cars in the first place.

2. the *older* Top Gear fans who drool and rave about every new sports car that comes out in the press and how they say they would only drive the fastest, most hardcore, manual version of each car, but in reality, if asked to put their money where their mouths are, seem to be bluffing.

or 3. Fans of everything automotive related, who were drawn into top gear because of cars, not the other way around. The types of people who will buy cars everybody else is afraid of and, through their own devotion, make it work. images/smilies/mrgreen.gif

It's kind of like massive fans of football or basketball...who have never played the actual sport a day in their life (barring physical disabilities preventing them from doing so) or have no interest in doing so, they'd rather just watch other ppl do it on tv. I've known a few ppl who are like this and always found it weird.

I dont think I can paint myself as either a definitive 'yes' or a 'no'. I'm interested in cars to a certain degree, but I dont have an encyclopedic knowledge about their finer attributes, which is why I spend little time in the automotive section of this forum. I've learned a lot over the past couple of years since I begun watching Top Gear and browsing this forum and there are aspects of cars that excite me, but there are still a lot of aspects of cars that bore the shit out of me. Compared to the average man in the street, I guess I am, besides I do enjoy motorsport, so I'll run with 'yes'.

By my own standards, I do consider myself to be a car person. I have limited knowledge of the technical ins and outs of cars, but I do have an interest in cars in general and enjoy motorsports.

I think a true petrolhead is interested at least somewhat by all things automotive. They enjoy not only Top Gear, but how cars work and the history of various companies and passionate debates about cars. On top of all that, a good drive must be important to them.

By my own standards, I consider myself a petrolhead.

I voted no. I own cars, I study cars. I enjoy driving cars.

Can I fix my car if it breaks? No. Do I change my own oil? No. I'm not even overly proficient on a manual car.

Do I know more about cars then your average person? Yes, but to call me a car person is a slap in the face to car people.

By my standards, yes. But by many here, no. I'm not old enough to drive and am no mechanic.

But I'm obsessed with cars and have watched Top Gear from 1996 images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I too don´t quite get what "Car People" are (in the mind of some here) ... but if it´s related somehow to a deep interest and fascination by or about cars in general ... I´m on board ...
