Well, I admit I know fuck all about cars and have absolutely no experience - hell, I don't even own a car right now. (Does tearing apart a 30-year old motorcycle count? But I didn't go into the engine...) Yet as long as you're willing to learn and expand your mind on automotive knowledge, then it doesn't matter if you're the next Smokey Yunick. You'll still be a "car person".

I wish the term "petrolhead" was more popular in America!

I have no idea how to fix my cat if she gets ill, nor how to castrate my own tomcat. And yet I consider myself a cat person.

In a similar vein, that makes me a car person I guess...

Is your car more to you than a means of conveyance? If so, you are a car person.

Well, I consider a car person as a person who is mechanically inclined (automotive), who picks a car with their heart rather than their head, and just goes out and drives their car just for the drive. So that's a no for me. images/smilies/smile.gif

I have driven for the sake of driving. I change my oil, and do simple (and some more complex) repairs. I have red hundreds of car magazines since I was about 7. I used to make my friends fall asleep talking about gear ratios, and differentials and cam duration. So, that is a huge YES from me. images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm not at all mechanically inclined beyond knowing vaguely what that thing does or that other thing, but I know what I like and what I don't like in cars.. so, yes I do consider myself a car person. I also get excited if I see something as 'unexotic' as a 350Z. But then again I've only ever seen one very occasionally around here, in fact I might even be seeing the same dark grey car all the time. I once saw a yellow Ferrari up ahead and wasted twenty minutes trying to get a closer look at it, eventually getting close enough to see it was a beautiful 355. images/smilies/w00t.gif Couldn't be a local, was probably in town for the annual car show out at the airport.

Compared to the average person, I am a car person. I've been interested in cars for most of my life. Though it's true that I know nearly nothing about the vast technical side of cars, I am willing to learn everything there is to know. I strive to one day become a car nerd. So compared to some of the people here, I'm in no way a car person. But compared to most people, I am a car person.

Today I changed the thermostat, waterpump, wheel bearing, brake pads, and changed the oil in my moms car and enjoyed it. As long as it's not my car (i hate working on my car no matter what it is) I enjoy working on them, I would rather spend a day getting dirty under the hood than watching TV.

But on the reverse of that I could really care less about "new" cars that come out. Every now and than a car comes out that I look forward to (GTR) but for the most part new cars just bore me. Late 80's mid 90's Japan with nothing FF than the spec of supercar is all I really care about when it comes to cars.

I guess that makes me the anti-top gear?

I wouldn't own hundreds of magazines, over 200 dvds, have countless gb of car movies and i wouldn't be planning all these modifications i am going to do to a car i don't have if i wasn't a car guy. Not to mention spending countless hours (and dollars) at car shows, drag meets etc.

I voted yes.

But it all depends on the definition of "car person". To me that's someone with a big interest in all things automotive, and someone who has a lot of knowledge on the subject. Being able to dissassemble and reassemble your car in under an hour doesn't have anything to do with it.
