Somebody sent me this link this morning, with the title "woman drivers"

Read the article and nowhere in it does it mention a female at the wheel.

Yeah but watch the video. They mention it a lot there. It was a woman driving the Lexus.

Auto parking is a joke. It is for people who can't park. If you can't park, you can't pass your drivers test, and if you can't pass your drivers test you can't drive. Therefore, if you use auto park (or any other autodriving feature) you should not be allowed to have a drivers licence.

No computer = crappy mileage, poor drivability, constant maintenance... weren't you complaining about that in another thread on this forum a little while ago?

Auto parking is very useful in these new-design cars with tall decklids and SUVs where you can't physically see where the back of the car is.

Did you read the article (OP, and Spectre, shame on you!).. IT ABOUT AN AUTOMATIC LEXUS, NOT AUTOMATIC PARKING. From looking at the Lexus UK site they dont even offer the Auto Parking feature in the RX, and I believe its still a LS ONLY option.

Also if I remember correctly from a test drive in a LS, the auto park only works rear first in a 90* parking spot.

hehe, No I didn't read the article.

@ Spectre: Yes I was complaining about it, but I still like it better. images/smilies/mrgreen.gif

I just don't like computers to interfere with the driving experience. I strongly feel that cruisecontrol/autotrannys(to a lesser extent)/self driving mechanisms allow for bad driving habits to form. (ie. not focusing on driving as the main task.)

But I promise I will read the article now images/smilies/biggrin.gif

This from the guy that has an automatic transmission????

As numerous old cops have said - you can't shoot and drive with a manual. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Also, if your pseudo-truck had been kitted out with computers like the Germans, Brits, and Japanese were using, you might actually be able to get 24-25mpg. Instead of the what, 10? you're getting now.

Finally, go drive something like my ex-XKR and then come back and tell me that same statement with a straight face. Improperly done, yeah, they can get in the way. Properly done, they keep you from exceeding your talent level and crashing spectacularly. Properly done, of course, includes an OFF switch that actually works (I'm looking at you, Mercedes).

Besides, you obviously don't know what the most dangerous car in the world is. It's anyone piloting a late 70s/early 80s Volvo 240 with a stick and no options. They have nothing interfering in the driving experience, yet they NEVER pay attention because "I'm in a Volvo, I'm safe, I don't have to pay attention." I fail to see how technology could possibly make this worse...

Not all computers interfere or even have anything to do with a driving experience. An ECU in your car won't stop you from power sliding around if you want to it will only make sure that your fuel delivery is reliable and constant. ABS, TC and SC systems MIGHT interfere but on most cars the latter 2 can be turned off and the former won't ever activate if you are good at threshold braking.

As far as auto tranny's go, I'm pretty sure the one in your Ute images/smilies/tongue.gif is not computer controlled but rather works using fluid dynamics.

Now how about tiptronics? Those tend to be fully computerized systems however they allow you for a convenience of an auto while retaining some of the fun of the stick. So here a computer is helping with the driving experience rather than take away from it.*

*Yes it is not the same, stick requires more involvement and is more fun (even if I suck at it due to lack of practice) but it's better than straight up auto.

I have a tiptronic
It's really damn laggy from second to third so I end up having to make that shift myself anyway most of the time.

Yes, but I would prefer a manual.

ANd I'm not saying that all computers are bad, I just think that when you have "self driving mechanisms" then you tend to not focus on the task at hand... driving.

Your point about the Volvo is good too. Just because you drive a really safe car, (suposedly) doesn't mean you should drive like an ass.

ABS and stuff are all good, as long as you can turn them fully off, but I still prefer a car without. EFI and things like that are good, no doubt. but those are passive things that are always working and don't interfere with driving.. My beef is with Cruisecontrol and stuff like that.

Anyways, I don't really have any evidence to back up my statement. (except maybe all the hollywood stars who run over people while appying makeup in their mercedes) So really it's just my opinion and I'm just going to call it a day on this issue.

Watch this video closely. It was recorded with using Tiptronic in the Audi A6 I recently had as a rental. Watch for the lamps in the middle that indicate the gear changes and then look at the rev counter for when the gear change actually happens. The lag you see between those two events is the lag from using the tiptronic until the gear change happens.

+ YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

The system is unpractical that way, so I used the normal automatic mode most of the time, which is nearly perfect in its smoothness and quick responses.
