Last night I decided to compare AWD systems, primarily Audi's Quattro and Subaru's symmetical design (and Evo once I figure some things out) and stumbled upon some really interesting information, such as the article above. Glad Im not the only one that finds this interesting images/smilies/tongue.gif

Pretty good article. His information about center diffs not being used in trucks isn't entirely true though. It probably applies in most cases, but older trucks with the NP203 full-time 4WD transfer case did in fact have a center diff which was manually lockable.

Keep in mind that article was last updated in Feb 1999 :/
so some of the technologies will have changed since.

IMO, his recomendations at the end are a bitt off. It really depends what you want the vehicle for. If you are buying a 4x4 for offroad use, definetly go for a part manually selectable system.

My Land Rover has a very similar setup. It's one of the reasons why older Discos and Range Rovers are so highly regarded for off road use.

I love shoving that handle to engage the diff lock and getting that nice satisfying clunk.
